A skull held aloft, a lovesick donkey, a bloodied dagger—these familiar icons are instantly recognizable shorthand for the plays of William Shakespeare. In the four hundred years since his death, the Bard of Avon's exalted place in the pantheon of theater and poetry—indeed, all of Western culture—is unequaled. As Ben Jonson proclaimed, Shakespeare "is not of an age but for all time!"And just as centuries of theatrical artists have reimagined his works through the lens of their own time and culture, so too have illustrators and designers been inspired to create posters that reinvent Shakespeare's well-known themes for each new generation of theatergoers. Presenting Shakespeare collects 1,100 posters for Shakespeare's plays, designed by an international roster of artists representing 55 countries, from Japan to Colombia, India, Russia, Australia, and beyond. A fascinating trove of theatrical artifacts, Presenting Shakespeare is a necessary volume for theater and design lovers alike.

Review "The organization of the book is a stroke of genius..The book is irresistible on many levels, not least for the reading, which includes a preface by Julie Taymor." -Design Arts Daily"...a great range of examples from all over the world." -Creative Review".with over a thousand posters from 55 countries it offers an opportunity to delve into how different cultures interpret Shakespeare's classic stories of love, tragedy, and twisted identities." -Hyperallergic"Next year marks the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death, but his plays live on. How they have managed to put butts in pews all this time is addressed, and generously illustrated, in a gorgeous new coffee table book, Presenting Shakespeare." -Playbill"Shakespeare on a skateboard or punkish with tattoos, Romeo i Julia with a heart-shaped bear trap, a Ralph Steadman Macbeth--from delicate to horrifying, these posters are arresting." -Shelf Awareness"The artists' interpretations of the plays are as varied as the takes of actors and directors who have approached the material over the many decades since they premiered, providing the diverse visual archive that amazes." -Print"The most striking posters in the book are the brainy minimalists, like the giant gloved and clenched fist in a French production of 'Othello,' or the deliciously morbid meat ice cream cone in an Argentine 'Hamlet.'" -New York Times

There are three small libraries that I try to help with new and of interest books. Every item listed below is in one of those libraries.

Graphic design encyclopedia through Shakespeare By Amir This is an excellent book with a rich collection of historical and contemporary posters for Shakespeare’s plays. What a brilliant idea! Much like Shakespeare’s productions have allowed diverse theatrical interpretations they have equally inspired a range of distinct visual expressions. The book is well researched and features an incredible number of posters from every part of the world—a tribute to Shakespeare’s universality. Hamlet in London, Moscow, Tel Aviv, or Sarajevo. Macbeth in New York, Othello in Frankfurt, Pericles in Shanghai, and Julius Caesar in Montevideo and in St. Louis. In many ways, it is an encyclopedia of design history. The book covers centuries of design work—from the letterpress playbills from the 1700s, the lithographic prints of the 1800s, to a large selection of contemporary posters. The work is organized thematically (by Shakespeare’s plays) rather than chronologically or geographically. By combining work from various places and historical periods in each spread the viewer gets a unique chance to compare similarities and differences in designers’ interpretations for the same topic. This is definitely an inspiring book for designers, design students, and anyone who would appreciate theatre posters.

Willhoite I am a designer of posters, a Shakespeare devotee, and sometime actor myself, and so this book seems to have been compiled just for my delectation and delight. It was so entertaining, so compulsively readable, that In order to make it last longer I allowed myself only a few pages at a time. Shakespeare is clearly a man for all nations, and speaks to everyone. The best posters, not surprisingly, are the ones from Anglophone countries, probably because we get Shakespeare unfiltered through translation. There are a great number of posters designed in Poland, and these are the edgiest, the most challenging artistically. I was amused to note that the Polish designers don't seem to see A Midsummer Night's Dream as the sparkling comedy it is, but rather a mysterious adventure in a dark and threatening forest. Some of the work is unimpressive, yet the best work stands in high contrast to these, and thus more enjoyable as a result. I highly recommend this book to all designers and theatre people.
