Sally Phipps was only three years old and the veteran winner of several beautiful baby contests when she appeared as the Baby in the film "Broncho Billy And The Baby." It was made at the Niles California Essanay Studio in late 1914. This book follows her amazing life and a career that culminated in her receiving the Rosemary (for remembrance) Award shortly before her death in 1978. Her memories of the early years at Essanay include sitting on Charlie Chaplin’s lap and enduring a frightening stage coach accident. In her teens, she was a Fox Studio star appearing in 20 films, including a cameo in the classic "Sunrise." There were bad times also. She was on the set of her Fox two-reel comedy "Gentlemen Prefer Scotch" in 1927 when word reached her of the scandalous death of her father, a state senator. But in that same year, she was selected as one of the 13 Wampas Baby Stars, starlets that were considered destined for future success. Despite her popularity in Hollywood, she left for New York where she became the darling of gossip columnists, particularly Walter Winchell. She appeared in two Broadway shows, made a Vitaphone comedy short, and married and divorced one of the Gimbel department store moguls before she darted off for India and around the world travel. Back in New York, there was another marriage, two children, and later a stay in Hawaii. Earl Wilson wrote about her in 1938 when she was working for the Federal Theatre Project during the WPA period -- headlining his column “Wampas Ex-Baby Lives On WPA $23 – And Likes It.” Her images – especially her pinup photographs – have become highly collectible. The book features 150 pictures from Sally’s personal and professional life, including glamorous portraits and pinups.

He now resides in Park Slope, Brooklyn, New York, with his partner, food journalist, cookbook author, and broadcaster Arthur Schwartz. By the end of the book I feel I know who that beauty was and that she was far more beautiful that the picture itself By Peter Charlot I found this book quite remarkable. I'm a little embarrassed for I was attracted by the picture of a real beauty, the cover, I knew nothing of the silent movie era, except for Chaplin and a few silent pictures I've seen. By the end of the book I feel I know who that beauty was and that she was far more beautiful that the picture itself. What makes the book shine is that the author, SallyPhipps son, Robert, remains in the wings until forced on stage. Then he returns to his place as narrator. He also does the impossible by avoiding the sentimental completely. I kind of groaned when I learned he was librarian. I feared the pedantic would obscure the people as living beings.. I was wrong. Robert is gifted with synopsis of character that brings home the total person. The story is so extraordinary, Robert does not have to embellish. What he does is gives details about the lives of those that were a part of Sally's life and then shapes the story of Sally herself. By the end we feel we know a whole era, the locations, and the style of life that Sally knew in so many ways, Clearly it is also a story of many of the young starlets who, like the rest of the country, were devastated by the great depression. There is a glorious interview in which she compares being rich and poor. I won't tell the story. I was moved by the reality that there was a time in Sally's life that she depended on being invited to parties, the only place that she could find food. The diametrically opposed realities are fantastic. Expected to be theatrical and vibrant, a woman among the rich and famous, Sally performed her social role to the hilt while eating heartily because she was starved. Please, read the book.

By Steve North This is a remarkable and moving story, written (in the third person) by a son whosemovie star mom essentially abandoned him at an early age… but who reconnected with her on various levels later in her life.Sally Phipps is largely forgotten today, but her career in silent films, then on Broadway, attracted lots of attention at the time. Harned’s book brings her back to life, and details the twists and turns that led Phipps from stardom to a tiny rented room above Carnegie Hall.It’s a tale of the glitz and glamour of show biz, from Hollywood to the Great White Way… as well as a peripatetic family’s story of heartache and happiness. Well worth reading.

This knowledgeable biography evokesthe social conditions that Sally Phipps confronted as an independent spirit inan era when women had to strive to transcend conventional roles. Her son'suncompromising account of her life embodies a filial devotion and an appreciationof her struggle and achievements that brought them closer in her last years.

The use of amplifier feedback to punctuate her speeches doesn't help. Her intense weeping at the play's start seems manipulative, and the revelation of her loss, anticlimactic, compared to Nancy's (Rosalind Ayres) loss of her murdered child. The central "frozen" metaphor is strained, and the speculation on evil and responsibility, commonplace. The real power lies in both Ayers's portrayal of a stricken woman coming to grips with life and Jeffrey Donovan's chilling characterization of the killer's sick affection for little girls. I wondered how someone constructs something that complex, with three or four or more intertwined stories, all being told at once. She did an excellent job with writing this play, and it felt "important."The play is dark, and peers deep in the hearts of three totally different characters, 1) a pedophile serial killer, 2) a psychologist who researches serial killers, and 3) the mother of a victimAll of the characters are frozen, each in their own different way. This play brought out tons of different emotions in me. I'm still trying to piece together how I feel about it.Two of the three characters changed way too fast toward the end, and it really didn't seem like a "quick unthaw" was the point of the play. Otherwise I would have given it five stars. But it really is very good.

It's written in a poetic and experimental form that makes it hard to understand in the beginning, but pretty soon the pieces start to come together. The play looks into the mind of a serial killer. You get the view of the mother of the victim, and the view of the professional pyschologist, as well as the killer himself.. who kind of suffers from a handicap, prohibting to tell the difference between right and wrong, and feeling remorse. Upon finishing the book, I felt a better understanding of the murder. The cause and effect. The mind of the murderer.For an actor, this play has a good selection of intense two person scenes, as well as some freaky monologs.

It draws upon human subtlety and the pain of silence and suffering in a way few other contemporary writers have. After seeing the prestigious Melbourne Theatre Company (Australia) perform this work in late 2003, with Australia's finest female actor Helen Morse in the role of Nancy and Frank Gallacher as Ralph, the striking calmness and profound destruction of such acts evoke the intended montage of cross sectional human decay and understanding.(The cast also included Belinda Mcclory as Agnetha, Dan Quigley and Kevin Maxwell. Directed by Julian Meyrick. Performed at the Fairfax Studio, Victorian Arts Centre)

By NotATameLion Modern readers of Dicken's A Christmas Carol are often inoculated to what a shocking piece of literature it was in its day. Familiarity has softened its blow to the public at large. This is not so with The Chimes.The Chimes is the second of Dickens's "Christmas Books." Written in 1844 it came a year after A Christmas Carol and a year before The Cricket on the Hearth. Not nearly as widely read as either its predecessor or its successor, The Chimes probably packs more of an emotional wallop than either story.Set on a New Year's Eve rather than on Christmas proper, The Chimes is a story about self-respect and the consequences of our choices. The main character, Trotty Veck is an inverse of sorts to A Christmas Carol's Ebeneezer Scrooge. He is poor and thinks so little of himself that he threatens to destroy himself and his family. Only through supernatural intervention can things hope to be set right.I first listened to this recording of The Chimes on last New Year's Eve. First of all, this recording is unabridged (even though it is currently listed as abridged.) Secondly, this particular recording is a wonderful reading of The Chimes. One could not ask for more.The Chimes is a tale that will--as the best of Dickensian melodrama does--grip you and wring your heart. One really gets the sense of what reading Dickens must have felt like to his contemporaries.This is powerful stuff. Give it a try.

By Chris Following Dickens's success with A Christmas Carol he started a tradition of releasing a new story each year at Christmas time. His second Christmas story was The Chimes. The book follows an old porter/messenger in London named Trotty Veck. As with Christmas Carol and many of his other works, Dickens has plenty of focus on the social structure of the country. Trotty is a very poor old widower with a single daughter, Meg. At the onset of the book, Meg brings Trotty lunch and announces that she plans to get married within the week on New Year's Day. At first Trotty is a little nervous but generally happy for his daughter. As the day goes on, Trotty becomes less sure of whether or not they should marry or even if any of them deserve to be happy.In Christmas Carol and other books, Dickens takes opportunities to have his characters give social commentary. In The Chimes this comes initially from some of the rich society members of the town as they give messages for Trotty to carry. The first commentary is in direct reaction to the announcement of Meg's wedding plans. Alderman Cute speaks with biting reproach against the lower class in general and Trotty, Meg and her fiance in particular. He talks of the "good old days" and eventually concludes that the poor have no real rights or privileges. In essence, they should be done away with entirely and certainly have no right to marry and carry on their wretched existence by propagating more poor creature.Trotty carries a message from the Alderman to a member of Parliament. In that house Trotty is berated by a commentary on economic stability and responsibility. He is chastised for being poor and owing a few shillings to a local shop where he buys food. Trotty leaves feeling even more disgraced. On his way home he meets another vagrant, William Fern, and his niece Lillian. Trotty knows William is slated to be arrested by the Alderman. Rather than let him be arrested, Trotty warns Fern and takes him to his own poor home with Meg.The title of the story is based on the Chimes that ring over the city from the church tower near where Trotty stands to await messages to deliver. After taking the Ferns to his home, Trotty gets pensive again and worries about the burden he's putting on society and wonders about the truth of whether it is better that he and his kind were removed from existence. During the night, the Chimes ring and Trotty can hear them speaking to him, calling to him. He follows them up into the church bell tower and encounters a company of goblins and spirits.One of the spirits takes the form of Lillian, the niece of William Fern. The spirit takes Trotty on a journey similar to that of Ebenezer Scrooge though rather than showing his past, Trotty is taken throughout the future of London. He sees the hole he leaves with his death. He sees the misery and pain of the poor around him. He sees the hypocritical behavior of the higher classes of society. He sees the pain and suffering of his own daughter and her eventual loss of all hope as she plummets into complete despair. In a scene reminiscent of Christmas Carol, we find Trotty begging the spirit to let him help Meg. He begs to be given another chance. He promises that he has learned the truth of life and knows now that the poor and feeble classes do have a right to existence. Better yet, they have a right to be happy and have hope and joy of better days to come.I found The Chimes to be less compelling than A Christmas Carol. I think part of that comes due to the lengthy sermons from Alderman Cute, Joseph Bowley (the member of Parliament) and others. While these narrations were interesting at a level they were also very steeped in political and social language of the times. Because I am not super familiar with the details of Victorian social woes there were plenty of allusions and references that just blew by me without the impact that they surely had on readers in Dickens's day. Even though I was bogged down by some of the very specific details, I was touched, shocked and appawled by the nature of the discussions. Especially knowing that these conversations and speeches were based in reality I found myself disgusted at the behavior of these individuals.I really liked the "spirit voyage" that Trotty goes on and found it very compelling. It had scenes similar to A Christmas Carol where Trotty sees the poverty and vagrancy in which people live but he also gets to see that they are capable of joy and happiness in spite of their enormous lack of sustenance. More than these expected scenes, I really liked the counterpoint scenes of the upper class members of society. I found it interesting to see their hypocrisy and the paradox that in some cases they weren't nearly as happy as those who had nothing.Doing a little bit of research, it sounds like The Chimes enjoyed great success upon release and had a wonderful reception. In reading the book I had thought that some of Dickens's satirical social commentary might have come a little too close to the mark and earned him reproof from those in government or business but it doesn't sound like there was too much of that. Instead it seems like this well received novel may have fufilled some of Dickens's hope that he could help bring more people to the knowledge of the plight and horrible situation of the poor.Personally I didn't enjoy the story as much as A christmas Carol so Chimes certainly won't a replacement for me as a new classic Christmas story. Still, I felt like the writing, characters and themes were very well presented and I think this is an excellent story well worth reading if only to provide additional subject matter to think on when considering the themes presented in A Christmas Carol. All in all, a solid piece of work.***3.5 out of 5 stars

Use Our Time Wisely By Fan of Time-Life Books The Chimes: A Goblin Story of Some Bells That Rang an Old Year Out and a New Year In is one of five Christmas books written in the 1840s by English writer Charles Dickens (1812-1870). Set on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, it tells the story of Trotty Veck who witnesses visions presented by goblins residing in the bell tower of a church. The moral I took from this story (and many of Dickens' stories can be classified as morality tales) is that time is given to us for our advancement and improvement. Rather than focusing on the past we need to use the present to improve the human condition. I found this story to be somewhat similar to Dickens' A Christmas Carol, but not as good as the latter. Nevertheless, The Chimes is a good story with a pertinent message.

About the Author Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse (P. G. Wodehouse) was an English humorist and writer best known for his Jeeves and Blandings Castle novels. Educated at boarding schools, Wodehouse turned to writing at a young age, demonstrating great skill at humorous sketches and musical lyrics. He continued to write part-time while pursuing, at the behest of his father, a career in banking, and successfully contributed numerous pieces to Punch, Vanity Fair, and The Daily Express, among other publications. In addition to his literary work, Wodehouse was incorporated into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in recognition of his collaboration with Cole Porter on Anything Goes, his lyrics to the song Bill from Show Boat, and his work on the musicals Rosalie and The Three Musketeers.

While interned along with other British citizens in Germany during the Second World War, Wodehouse made a series of radio broadcasts for which he was accused of being a collaborator; and, although later cleared of the charges, he never returned to England. His work has influenced many other writers including Evelyn Waugh, Rudyard Kipling, J. K. Rowling, and John Le Carr?. P. G. Wodehouse died in 1975 at the age of 93.

A Princess Show By NYC Kern Lover Sincere thanks to the publisher for giving us this reprint of one of the jewels that Kern wrote with Wodehouse and Bolton. These shows are the foundation of 20th Century American Musical theater.Would that he would give us a reprint of the score to the best of those show, one called, Oh, Boy !
