A Gathering of Promises is a history of acid rock and psychedelic music in and from the state of Texas, focusing largely on its mid-1960s origins with the 13th Floor Elevators and contemporaries such as the Golden Dawn, the Red Crayola and Bubble Puppy, and following its development to the present day and the popularity of the annual Austin Psych Fest. Grounded in a strong social, cultural and historical context, the book asks how Texas produced some of the most extreme and influential psych of any era despite a prevailing social ethos of Christian conservatism and the strictest drug laws of any American state. It looks at how this environment shaped and affected the music, alongside the Texan frontier spirit and its championing of expansion, freedom and individualism.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. "IF YOU HAVE A CONSERVATIVE CULTURE YOU WILL HAVE A LIBERAL UNDERGROUND." By Stuart Jefferson If you've ever wondered about the beginnings of the Texas psychedelic rock era, this book will give you some insight into that exciting era when bands like the 13th Floor Elevators, Red Krayola, Bubble Puppy, Fever Tree (a personal favorite from the vinyl days), the Moving Sidewalks, and others pushed themselves and rock music into a different shape, attitude, and sound that was totally new. The book focuses primarily on late '60s/early '70s bands due to space limitations, but a line had to be drawn somewhere. Left out are bands formed in the mid '70s and beyond and the many garage bands (like Mouse and The Traps--another personal favorite) that were seemingly popping up all over Texas. The book has no photos and (sadly) no index, but included is a bibliography and various sources used in the book. The author, Ben Graham (an Englishman) begins with the premise that these bands were not part of some vaguely united movement, but did share a belief in the possibilities of psychedelics and rock music. So the book isn't a strict, encompassing look at Texas r'n'r, but rather a broader picture of the music and the times, using a number of bands to flesh out the scene during these few years. Graham has interviewed or corresponded with a number of people who were there at the time like Stu Cook, Clementine Hall, Powell St. John, Rod Prince, Roky Erickson, and others--whose quotes run through the book.Graham places the free-thinking/liberal/drugs/psychedelic experience in relation to many people's conservative Christian values found in Texas--people who saw no value in individualism and free expression espoused by these band's music and personal outlook. He goes into some detail about the beginnings of several bands (most who revolved around the Elevators) and performers like Janis Joplin and bands like Mother Earth, and the forces that brought them together under the psychedelic banner as examples of this "degenerate" new music. But Graham also weaves in the Berkeley Folk Festival, John Fahey, the International artists (IA) label (so important to Texas bands), plus the local club scenes and the local bands that helped keep the music alive, and other pertinent pieces of the puzzle--and how they relate to Texas bands, some who were beginning to become more well known outside of Texas. While certainly not definitive (which Graham says wasn't the idea anyway) this book does give a good look back at the Texas scene beginning in the late '60s when a number of bands were stepping up to play their own music to a wider audience. If you're a fan of that period of Texas r'n'r you need to check out this book--especially since Graham has never set foot in Texas and has never experienced these bands during their prime. Even if you disagree with him about a particular song or band, Graham's writing will cause you to go back and listen again to albums by these seminal bands--and that's a good thing. This book can sit next to "Mind's Eye" (an in depth look at the Elevators/Roky Erickson) as something worth adding to your library of books on music/musicians.

Comments From Other Readers

“Paul Walker seemed like a nice guy in Hollywood with just another pretty face. I never know about his charity work and apparently that’s how he wanted things. Learning about the work that he did to help others really made me appreciate him as more than just another actor. We need more men like him. The world is a darker place now that he’s gone.” –Bethany (New York, United States) “If you’re a fan of Paul Walker’s work get this book. He was so much more than another action star. I never knew much fo the information that I found in this book about him. I can understand his rational for keeping it quiet but the world should know that he was more than what he seemed to be. Truly a great little book.” – Kevin (Oregon, United States) Tags: Hollywood, actor, Fast and the Furious, actor bio, biography, Paul Walker, actor deaths, humanitarian, charity work, Reach Out Worldwide

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Humble hero! By Dulce Amor Bravo I highly recommend this book. Paul Walker's generosity and eagerness to help will make you ask yourself, "Am I doing enough?". The book raises awareness on the amount of help we are doing for others in need. Paul showed us that showing sympathy and donating is not merely enough, that we should also go out there and actually help. Helping is hands-on. And it is heart-warming to know that Paul did all this with eagerness but also with a humble heart. That is what amazes me, the fact that we didn't know this side of him. Building the foundation and helping others is not something he did to become more famous, instead he used his name and fame to persuade others to help as well. He may not live a long life but he lived it well by being a blessing to others.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. inspirational! By just a girl I recently got on the "fast and furious" band wagon after seeing the last of them. Quickly, I was hooked and had to catch up by watching the rest of them. In each movie, I was really impressed with how good of an actor Walker was. I decided to learn more about him and used this book to help me. Wow, he was a way better person than I would have ever imagined. I wish more celbrities would be as selfless as he was. He was a true inspiration to us all. I really enjoyed reading this book and I'm so sad that he is no longer with us. I would highly recomend this book to everyone.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Man behind the actor By softballgirl I am no fun of Fast and furious movie franchise. But I liked Paul Walker. I was a bit sad when I hear that he died. In a way I was intrigued about his life and work so I decided to read this book. All I can say after reading it is what a man Paul Walker was, especially when cameras turned off.Funs of Pal Walked will find many thing about their hero that they already know. But for me this book was great. It does not touch upon the gossip, it provides facts about life of actor, marine biologist and humanitarian Paul Walker. Worth reading

‘There are thousands of well-educated and highly-qualified landscape designers in this country but only a fraction of them make a decent living. For too long, this talented community has placed its artistry above charging fairly for its services. It is time to figure out a better, fairer way.’  Chapter one

This hands-on book discusses all the elements of Catherine Wiersema’s top rated, semester-long, professional practice course for landscape designers, taught at Radcliffe/Harvard’s Landscape  Institute and the Boston Architectural Center over the past 15 years. Richly illustrated with lessons learned and war stories from her own and others’ practical experiences, the book is a step-by-step guide to building a profitable, client-focused business. Both early-career and advanced landscape designers and landscape architects will find much of value to help them target the best clients, promote and price their services, and above all, manage the multiple phases of happy  client relationships.

About the Author:

This book is the culmination of Catherine’s career as landscape designer and educator. For many years, her sought-after design/build practice - Boussard Garden Design - focused on large residential properties. With her professional practice course she addressed a big void in the curriculum for landscape designers - how to build a profitable business.

She is a recipient of the Harvard Landscape Institute’s Distinguished Faculty award and has been an acclaimed lecturer at  numerous conferences including those of the Association of Professional Landscape Designers.

Catherine is a graduate of Radcliffe’s Program in Landscape Design, is APLD-certified, and holds an MBA. Her earlier career was in marketing/sales in the corporate world and as associate professor of marketing and strategy.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. unaware or forgetful of best industry practices By Amazon Customer As landscape designers we often find ourselves working somewhat in isolation, unaware or forgetful of best industry practices. The Thriving Landscape Designer reconnects us with every aspect of what we love to do, from the psychology of managing clients' expectations, to very practical and useful concepts such as municipal approvals and preparing budgets for your clients. Catherin's inclusion of personal stories and experiences lend the book a human and very readable flow. She is remarkably generous with her vast experience and shares specifics in costs, profitability, and process from initial client meeting, through the design process and installation, to invoicing and reconciliation. The valuable information contained in these pages is often lacking in the curricula of Landscape design programs. It is a must have, not only for those of us just beginning careers in the green industry, but also the established and experienced among us.

I have been in the landscape business for a number of years and it still gave me new ideas of how to improve many aspects of my business. Very easy to read and implement.

Exceptional Book for Landscape Designers of All Levels By Ladybug This book presents a well-rounded examination of key elements for a successful career in landscape design. It is extremely well organized, and the writing succinct, not verbose. Using pages filled with stories, examples, case studies, graphics, and work site photos Catherine clearly communicates her points. The writing is very much like an engaging “how to” book rather than like a dry business school textbook. Of particular note are the chapters on managing risk and the installation team as they relate to the overall project success.I am an experienced designer, have been in business for almost 15 years and have worked with the author. Catherine retired at the top of her game, culminating with this book publication. I took Catherine’s Professional Practice Course (from which much of this book seems to have been developed), about mid-way in my career so some of the material was familiar. However my business has evolved and grown since then. I find a great deal in this book to consider and apply to my work going forward and have sticky notes marking several sections which I plan to reference.

The Beatles' sixth studio album, Rubber Soul , was a game changer. By December 1965, when the album was released, the Beatles had played the first arena rock show at Shea Stadium for 55,000 delirious fans, been awarded MBE (Member of British Empire) medals, and were indisputably the greatest musical phenomenon since Elvis Presley. With their first film, A Hard Day's Night , John, Paul, George, and Ringo laid down the blueprint for everyone who ever wanted to form a group. The movie, entertaining as it was, became an instruction manual for aspiring pop stars of the day on how to play, dress, and act. Richard Lester's 1964 comedy turned out to be the touchstone for every music video that followed. Then, with the release of Rubber Soul , the Beatles created an artistic benchmark to which their peers measured their craft and creativity. Touring the world over two years, the band had grown up fast. Both musically and lyrically their new album represented a major leap. Upon hearing Rubber Soul , Bob Dylan allegedly remarked, "I get it, you're not cute anymore." Newsweek hailed the Beatles as "the Bards of Pop," while critic Greil Marcus claimed Rubber Soul was "the best album they would ever make." For Traffic's Steve Winwood, the album "broke everything open. It crossed music into a whole new dimension and was responsible for kicking off the sixties rock era." In This Bird Has Flown , John Kruth not only analyzes the songs and making of Rubber Soul , putting the album in context of the turbulent times in which it was created, but captures the spirit of musical innovation and poetry that makes the record a standout in the Beatle's canon.

This Bird Has Flown: The Enduring Beauty of Rubber Soul, Fifty Years On, by John Kruth, The Beatles

Review Whether he's playing music or writing about it, John Kruth does so enthusiastically. Kruth...returns to a youthful favorite with ''This Bird Has Flown,'' a detailed look at ''Rubber Soul,'' which the Beatles released on Dec. 3, 1965... While many fans would name the subsequent ''Revolver'' (1966) or ''Sgt. Pepper'' (1967) as the Beatles' best, Kruth identifies ''Rubber Soul'' as the album where the Beatles shifted into a more ambitious mode. (I'd call it the album where the Beatles turned rock song into art song.) The British and American releases of ''Rubber Soul'' were substantially different; Kruth digs into all the songs on both versions, plus the outtake ''12-Bar Original.'' In addition to offering many details about inspiration, instrumentation and lyrical intent, Kruth also provides relevant context about the Beatles's peers, notably Dylan, who influenced them and in turn was inspired by them; the Rolling Stones, whom John Lennon accused of copying the Beatles' innovations; and the Byrds, who listened closely to the Liverpudlians and picked up a few things, such as chiming 12-string guitar. For dessert, Kruth considers many cover versions of ''Rubber Soul'' songs, reminding us of the fabulous Thee Headcoatees take on ''Run for Your Life'' and of Cornershop's "Norwegian Wood.'' You don't need to be a Beatlemaniac to enjoy this friendly book. --Milwaukee Journal Sentinel''Using archive material and some original interviews, [John Kruth] shows why Rubber Soul is structurally, lyrically and sonically the first mature work by these still young men. In doing so, he presents an absorbing series of cross-sections through 60s society on both sides of the Atlantic.'' - MOJO Magazine ''Journalist, musician, and professor Kruth (music, Coll. of Mount St. Vincent) marks the 50th anniversary of the Beatles' 1965 landmark album Rubber Soul, a musically diverse and lyrically mature work reflecting the group's newfound interest in hallucinogenic drugs, Indian music and spirituality, and sonic experimentation. Each song on the British or American version gets its own chapter that is packed with backstory details, lyric and music analysis, and, for most tunes, a brief discussion of both obscure and well-known cover versions. Chapters on Lennon-McCartney classics such as ''Day Tripper'' and ''Norwegian Wood'' are fascinating enough, but the book really shines when Kruth reveals little-known facts about deep cuts such as George Harrison's ''If I Needed Someone'' and the Ringo Starr-sung ''What Goes On.'' Kruth also tells the story behind Rubber Soul's famous sleeve artwork, addresses the various ways the album title can be interpreted, and, in one of the book's best chapters, digs deep into how the Beatles, the Beach Boys, the Kinks, Bob Dylan, and other major pop and rock artists influenced and inspired one another throughout the mid-to late 1960s. [U]nique and insightful...musicologists and readers with a serious interest in the Fab Four will find much here to relish. - Douglas King, Univ. of South Carolina Lib., Columbia --Library Journal''With the release of their sixth studio album, The Beatles created an artistic benchmark by which their peers measured their own craft and creativity. John Kruth not only analyzes the songs and making of Rubber Soul, putting the album in context of the turbulent times in which it was created, but captures the spirit of musical innovation and poetry that makes the record a standout in The Beatles' canon.'' - Music Connection ''The Beatles along with Bob Dylan were the most influential forces in music during the 1960s. And while there was already something fresh and invigorating about The Beatles' early recordings, their creativity leaped during the making of their milestone album, Rubber Soul (1965). New York musician-writer John Kruth recounts the heady excitement of the era in This Bird Has Flown: The Enduring Beauty of Rubber Soul Fifty Years On (Backbeat Books). Kruth, who previously authored biographies of Roland Kirk and Roy Orbison, wrote This Bird Has Flown in a jocular, highly personal style; an adolescent when The Beatles materialized on Ed Sullivan, he has vivid memories of a time when rock music was expected to startle the audience with newness. In This Bird, Kruth examines each of the album's tracks and The Beatles in light of their influences-musical, literary and cultural-as well as those whom they influenced, which was practically everyone.'' --Shepherd Express

Lucente Since I was born in December1962, I was only 14 months old when the Beatles hit the Ed Sullivan stage in early February 1964, so I always learned about the Beatles through heavy reading (and I mean a lot), plus, of course, by purchasing every piece of vinyl available from Capitol Records and listening my brains out through Cerwin-Vega speakers in the 70s. Even as a 6-year old, I recall vividly making the peace sign out the window of my yellow school bus while singing the AM-version of "Revolution" with classmates in the first grade. Who wouldn't have? We knew how important the Beatles were to music even at such a young age, much like John Kruth did when he watched the Beatles for the first time on Ed Sullivan in February 1964 at the age of 9. Aside from nostalgia, however, I LOVE this book for two reasons: 1) Rubber Soul is my personal favorite from the Beatles, and now I have a much greater understanding of its groundbreaking qualities; 2) John Kruth makes me feel like "I was there" given his rich set of facts. He succeeds in detailing just how exciting, innovative, and fast-changing pop music was in 1965. It's insightful to no-end! I would highly recommend this book to any Beatles fan or 60s rock buff. It will put a smile on your face too! Ed

It was well researched, providing a lot of backstory that I really had no idea about. It artfully combined the technical aspects of the creation of the music, the Fab Four's influences, and had great feel for the personalities and times. John's musicianship and writing talent really shine through this book, I couldn't put it down.

There are numerous errors from the get-go, some easily verifiable (The Lorraine Motel is not across from the Stax Records building) to just sloppy (Dylan's "Subterranean Homesick Blues" album?) There are countless instances, enough to make me doubt the veracity of many observations that may well be true. The author also tends to follow tangents (one minute he's discussing "We Can Work It Out" and the next he's talking about McCartney's bust in Japan. These time-jumps happen every chapter and make little sense). You may get the impression that you're reading what started out as a decent essay but is unnecessarily elongated by just about any Beatle-related tidbit (related or not) that the author could shoe-horn in. From repeating the same anecdote in more than one chapter to many, many tenuous conclusions easily contradicted by far superior sources, this is not a book that will pass muster with serious Beatles fans. It almost reads as if it were written off the top of the author's head (was it?)
