Four exciting concert solos for flamenco guitar from Juan Martin's best-selling album 'The Andalucian Suites'. This is the first of the four suites on the album. These suites are transcribed into standard notation and flamenco tablature (cifra), with introductory playing notes by Juan Martin. The four solos on the accompanying online audio recording are performed by Juan. The complementary and contrasting variety of styles and rhythms of the four solos provide a brilliant display of Juan's artistry and the expressive capabilities of the flamenco guitar. Each solo is complete in itself. A powerfully evocative Zambra Mora is followed by the much-requested rumba 'La Feria', then a gently melancholic Milonga and finally a thrilling Bulerias, which combines modern elements with pure gypsy falsetas from Moron del la Frontera. These solos provide an exceptional opportunity to learn and enjoy the music of a master flamenco guitarist, whose two volumes of graded 'Solos Flamencos' are already Mel Bay best-sellers.

Excellent for the advancing guitar student. I performed "La Feria" (from the book) at a recent recital. The audience was quite impressed with the use of the guitar as a percussion instrument within this piece. You can find performances of the pieces by the author on YouTube.

"Marked by the aching articulation, scathing wit and deep convictions of a mature artist with a complete vision."--Frank Rich, The New York Times"If Arthur Miller had married Noel Coward, their son would have been Robbie Baitz." --André Bishop, from the PrefaceJon Rubin Baitz startled the theatrical world with the 1985 debut of The Film Society. A frank examination of the controlling forces behind a nearly bankrupt private school for boys in South Africa, The Film Society introduced a young playwright with an extraordinarily mature grasp of people, language and society.Baitz's recent works have fulfilled his early promise and enhanced his reputation. In The Substance of Fire (1991), a fiercely intellectual New York publisher struggles with his children for control of his business, and with the relentless pride which has made him previous to love. In The End of the Day (1992), an expatriate British doctor adapts to America by abandoning his ideals and succumbing to the twin lures of status and crime.About the Author: Jon Robin Baitz is the author of Three Hotels, The Film Society, Other Desert Cities, The End of the Day, and The Substance of Fire, which he adapted into a major motion picture. He was the showrunner on ABC’s Brothers & Sisters. He also wrote the screenplay for the upcoming film Stonewall directed by Roland Emmerich. He lives in New York.

The Substance of Fire and Other Plays, by Jon Robin Baitz

From Library Journal At the age of 31, Baitz is emerging as a powerful new voice in the world of contemporary drama. In this collection of three plays, The Film Society (1985), The Substance of Fire (1991), and The End of the Day (1992), Baitz explores "the decreasing power of the individual and the increasing responsibility of the individual." Settings range from a crumbling boys' school in South Africa to a New York publishing house and a Southern California clinic. In each play, we see how someone with ideals and moral convictions succumbs to the forces of a corrupt society. These are serious pieces, touched with scathing wit. A forthcoming film version of Substance of Fire should help stir demand. This book is recommended for drama collections.- Howard E. Miller, Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Missouri Lib., St. LouisCopyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review The Substance of Fire“A powerful and potent play about family, money & morality.” –Charles Isherwood, New York Times“Family drama takes on new meaning in this excellent and timely revival. Baitz has a keen eye for generational drama. It's impossibr4le not to see echoes of the present in this timeless tale.” - Zachary Stewart, Theatermania.com (Off Broadway Revival)“Sharp, Lively and Insightful. A fiercely intelligent work about an unbridgeable gap between father and child.” –Robert Feldberg, The Bergen Record"A deeply compassionate play." –Frank Rich, New York Times"A remarkably intelligent drama." –Jan Stuart, New York NewsdayThe Film Society"Graceful dialogue, lyrically flowing poetic soliloquies, an anthropologist's eye for detail and an awareness that people are too complicated for characters to be cut from whole, homogeneous cloth." - Ben Brantley, The New York Times“Mr. Baitz’s writing is characteristically sparkling; it’s smart, funny and engaging throughout.” – Jesse Oxfeld, New York Observer"Using the school as a microcosm for South Africa, Baitz explores the psychological workings of repression in a society that has to kill its conscience in order to persist in a course of action it knows enough to abhor but cannot afford to relinquish." –Mimi Kramer, The New Yorker"What distinguishes Mr. Baitz' writing, aside from its manifest literacy, is its ability to embrace the ambiguities of political and moral dilemmas that might easily be reduced to blacks and whites." - Frank Rich, New York Times"It's easy to imagine yourself in a London theater watching the kind of play that Americans just don't know how to write. Baitz is clearly one American who does." - Dan Sullivan, Los Angeles TimesThe End of the Day“Bleak yet hilarious… A field day for actors” – Frank Rich, The New York Times

One of the foremost piano virtuosi of her time, Fannie Bloomfield-Zeisler reliably filled Carnegie Hall. As a "new woman," she simultaneously embraced family life and forged an independent career built around a repertoire of the German music she tirelessly championed. Yet after her death she faded into obscurity.   In this new biography, Beth Abelson Macleod reintroduces a figure long, and unjustly, overlooked by music history. Trained in Vienna, Bloomfield-Zeisler significantly advanced the development of classical music in the United States. Her powerful and sensitive performances, both in recital and with major orchestras, won her followers across the United States and Europe and often provided her American audiences with their first exposure to the pieces she played. The European-style salon in her Chicago home welcomed musicians, scientists, authors, artists, and politicians, while her marriage to attorney Sigmund Zeisler placed her at the center of a historical moment when Sigmund defended the anarchists in the 1886 Haymarket trial.   In its re-creation of a musical and social milieu, Fannie Bloomfield-Zeisler paints a vivid portrait of a dynamic artistic life.

An exceptional biography of an extraordinary woman a difficult time for a woman to be a successful concert pianist By Amazon Customer This is a biography that places Bloomfield-Zeisler where she belongs in the history of American musicians. It is full of details of the times and circumstances, especially in turn-of-the-century (nineteenth-twentieth) Chicago, as well as of the Bloomfield-Zeisler family, with a sympathetic portrait of the complex woman who is the subject of the book. It is also the product of deep and thorough research handled gracefully so as to be exceptionally readable.

One muggy summer in New England, an unemployed agrostologist--otherwise known as the Grassman--goes to work for the wealthy Bill Borrington, a "rock-hard dreamer" with a motley crew of hangers-on and a cattle farm in the Berkshires. His mission: to transform a weed-ridden field into a carpet of pristine putting green that will bring riches to Bill and win the admiration of the ravishing Autumn Bliss. To reach his goal, the Grassman must contend with hostile cowboys, inmates from a women's prison, bad digestion, and above all the dreaded curse of the Zombini Sisters.

By Slick Like a pulp fiction private eye, Joe is the cynical protagonist at the heart of Jack Young's hilarious "Faraway Green." But unlike the hard-boiled Sam Spade, Joe’s profession is grass – he’s an unemployed everyman with a degree in agrostology forced by circumstances to accept a job he knows is doomed. Joe arrives at the seemingly bucolic Berkshire estate of “Big Bill” Borrington, a wealthy, eccentric entrepreneur whose grandiose (and half-baked) plans are eclipsed only by his over-sized magnetic personality. “Big Bill” wants Joe to turn a two-acre patch of weeds into putting green turf to be marketed and sold to golf aficionados everywhere. Proclaimed by his new boss to be the “best damned grassman in New England,” Joe knows enough to realize it’s a preposterous venture, but, like so many of pulp fiction’s flawed men, readily accepts when he falls under the spell of an exotic and flirtatious femme fatale. Only this femme isn’t deadly – Autumn Bliss is a mystical, enigmatic member of Big Bill’s team who becomes the object of the poor grassman’s lustful obsession.Armed with a ragtag collection of down-on-their luck field hands who work for booze, Joe struggles to keep the weeds at bay all the while clashing with Big Bill and his derisive team of sycophants. Throw in a curse from a pair of vengeful sisters, a group of aging heffers and a couple of exploding chickens and you have the makings of an absurdly compelling fun-filled adventure. Fueled by Young’s knack for deadpan humor and the courage to strip away all pretension, “Faraway Green” is madcap comedy that exposes the flaws in all of us.

By Andy If you're looking for a great story, with a cast of well-developed characters you would swear you've met yourself somewhere along the way, then do yourself a favor and read Faraway Green. Set in the rolling hills of western Massachusetts, we follow along as the itinerant Grassman is drawn into the world of dreamer and schemer Bill Borrington, whose latest plan for instant riches is DIY backyard putting greens. No spoilers here, but you will find yourself laughing often and sometimes awkwardly as the plan begins to take shape and heads toward what can only be described as its inevitable conclusion. This is one you won't be able to put down, and we hope to see more from this author available soon.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. make this book more than a series of funny episodes--though it certainly is that By Jennifer The humor novel has become something of a lost art, but Jack Young is doing his part to keep it alive. His keen observation of character, and a gift for plotting absurd-yet-believable situations, make this book more than a series of funny episodes--though it certainly is that. At it best, it becomes a study of classic American characters--bums, hucksters, syncophants, seductresses, and the Grassman as striving anti-hero--as well as a comic contemplation of the power of the American Dream. Well worth a read!

Among the most well-loved of William Shakespeare's history plays, Henry V is the gripping conclusion to the story of young 'Prince Hal' begun in Henry IV, edited by A R Humphreys with an introduction by Ann Kaegi. 'We few, we happy few, we band of brothers For he today that sheds his blood with me Shall be my brother' Young King Henry wages war on France. But, tainted by his father's crimes, and with enemies among his own men, he must confront the difficult responsibilities of kingship. In rousing speeches, first at the siege of Harfleur where he urges his men 'Once more into the breach', and again on St Crispin's Day before the Battle of Agincourt, Henry rallies the English troops to spectacular victories which change the course of history. But even with the battles won, the war is not yet over - for to make safe his success, Henry must secure a marriage with the French princess, Catherine of Valois. And can triumph in France prevent civil war in England? This book includes a general introduction to Shakespeare's life and the Elizabethan theatre, a separate introduction to Henry V, a chronology of his works, suggestions for further reading, an essay discussing performance options on both stage and screen, and a commentary. William Shakespeare (1564-1616) was born to John Shakespeare and Mary Arden some time in late April 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon. He wrote about 38 plays (the precise number is uncertain), many of which are regarded as the most exceptional works of drama ever produced, including Romeo and Juliet (1595), Henry V (1599), Hamlet (1601), Othello (1604), King Lear (1606) and Macbeth (1606), as well as a collection of 154 sonnets, which number among the most profound and influential love-poetry in English. "Shakespeare was the greatest humanist who has ever lived." (Trevor Nunn, former Artistic Director for the Royal Shakespeare Company).

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Excellent Peformances, Interpretation By Amazon Customer This rendering of Henry V is generally very well acted, with superb articulation by the actors. Compared to many film (and stage) versions of Shakespeare, where the actors seem to want to speak the lines as quickly as possible--seemingly because they feel that's how they should present emotion--and end up slurring the words together, the actors in this recording can communicate emotional range in a very articulate way, with excellent enunciation, well-placed pauses, and good modulation. The dialogue truly comes alive, and nuances unnoticed while reading come through clearly.Another strong point is the evenness of the quality of the acting. All the characters, however minor or major, are played equally well, a sign of a well-directed play. The music is at times a little sappy (for example during the St. Crispin Day's speech), but on the whole, if you want to really connect with spoken Shakespeare, it's hard to go wrong with this choice, either for teachers of Shakespeare or simple lovers of the bard.

However, read the Wikipedia synopsis or Spark's Notes for the historical commentaries about the play's themes and the summary of other play to gain a better understanding of the play.Production: Overall, it is the usual very good product from Archangel. I have bought several of their Shakespearean dramas. No issues with their actors, music, play interpretation, or sound.

A few things you should know about Arkangel's 'Henry V' By A Customer The final play in Shakespeare's so-called first tetralogy, this is Shakespeare's 'action movie' play in many ways, and is better suited to a stage or film than an audio production. King Henry V is here played by the same actor (Jamie Glover) who played Hal in Arkangel's Henry IV (see my reviews of those), and now as king he alters his voice appropriately. He doesn't deliver the fiery war speeches with appropriate intensity ("Will you yield, and this avoid?" etc.), but is great in the scene where he walks unknown among the troops on the night before the battle. The comic interludes are a bit flat compared to the Henry IV plays (Falstaff's presence is sorely missed), but the scene where Princess Katherine tries to learn English and finds it obscene is very funny. And despite my own distrust of the nation state, it's impossible not to be moved by the feeling of the English being underdogs, as vividly evoked by the Chorus (Brian Cox). When this was set, the nation state was still in its infancy though - and not in its dotage as currently.
