That’s Wright!  One of the greatest pioneers in the history of architecture   Acclaimed as the “father of skyscrapers”, the quintessentially American icon Frank Lloyd Wright (1867–1959) was an architect of aspiration. He believed in giving cultivated American life its fitting architectural equivalent and applied his idealism to structures across the continent, from suburban homes to churches, offices, skyscrapers, and the celebrated Guggenheim Museum.Wright’s work is distinguished by its harmony with humanity and its environment, a philosophy he called organic architecture, and which found its paradigm at Fallingwater, a house in rural Pennsylvania, cited by the American Institute of Architects as “the best all-time work of American architecture”. Wright also made a particular mark with his use of industrial materials, and by the simple L or T plan of his Prairie House which became a model for rural architecture across America. Wright was also often involved in many of the interior elements of his buildings, such as the furniture and stained glass, paying particular attention to the balance between individual needs and community activity.Exploring Wright’s aspirations to augment American society through architecture, this book offers a concise introduction to his at once technological and Romantic response to the practical challenges of middle-class Americans.   About the Series:Each book in TASCHEN’s Basic Architecture Series features:

  • an introduction to the life and work of the architect
  • the major works in chronological order
  • information about the clients, architectural preconditions as well as construction problems and resolutions
  • a list of all the selected works and a map indicating the locations of the best and most famous buildings
  • approximately 120 illustrations (photographs, sketches, drafts and plans)

Hymn to the Chesapeake opened at the Trawler Dinner Theater on the Eastern Shore and has had over ninety performances in Virginia and Maryland, as well as performances in Washington, D.C., New York City, and St. Petersburg, Russia. Readings using material from the play possibly exceed the number of actual productions and include readings for libraries, museums, universities, colleges, and literary festivals, as well as the Poetry Society of Virginia and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. The poem/play won Port Folio magazine’s Most Innovative Theater Award. For its creation, the author won the Christians in Theater Arts Award. This musical play has been adapted from the book Hymn to the Chesapeake, ROAD Publishers, 33412 Lankford Highway, Painter, Virginia 23420. The author uses fragments of actual conversations, traditional melodies, adapted lyrics from traditional songs, captions, etc. He also uses the works of various painters, photographers, and writers as inspirations for various poems. The literary works of William Warner have been used extensively and are often quoted. The Crisfield section is based on a chapter of Warner’s Beautiful Swimmers. The known composers whose works have been adapted herein are Gordon Bok (Clear Away in the Morning, Mrs. MacDonald’s Lament, and Saben, the Woodcutter), Les Dwier (Sadness and Divorce, Death, and Symmetry), Dodie Welsh Paris (Ladies of the Bay), Andy Stewart (Blackbird, Golden), Bob Zentz (Companioned by the Sea), Chris Van Cleave (Emmanuelle), and William Whiting and John B. Dykes (Eternal Father). In some cases, the author has not been able to identify the sources of the music adapted. The introduction and arrangement of Leave Her Johnny, Leave Her have been adapted from a recording by The Virginia Company (Blow Ye Winds). Transcription and many arrangements are by Patrick Belote, Judi Beck and Carin Cowell. Judi Beck first conceived of this project and has been both a driving force and a font of ideas in regard to its completion. Bruce Jones greatly assisted with the plotting. Also offering valuable advice and direction were Gray Arthur, Ann Louise Johnston, David Poyer, Lenore Hart, Elizabeth Arthur, Donna Robinson, and Joseph Adams. First presented by the Trawler Dinner Theater under the direction of Judi Beck August 1995 in Exmore, Virginia with the following cast: Larry Lovelady, Marilyn Kellam, Laura Trala, Robert Oliver, Jim Turner, Sherry Belote, and Robert P. Arthur. Guitar by Bruce Jones and keyboard by Patrick Belote.

The Comedy of Errors is one of William Shakespeare's early plays. It is his shortest and one of his most farcical comedies, with a major part of the humour coming from slapstick and mistaken identity, in addition to puns and word play. The Comedy of Errors (along with The Tempest) is one of only two of Shakespeare's plays to observe the classical unities. It has been adapted for opera, stage, screen and musical theatre.

The Comedy of Errors (Annotated), by William Shakespeare

From Library Journal These are the first two titles in Penguin's newly revamped "Pelican Shakespeare" series. The Pelicans have been the leading editions for many years, but the publisher realized that much new scholarship on the plays has been unearthed since the series was introduced. Eight Shakespeare scholars were hired to produce new, more accurate texts plus introductions and textual notes. The good stuff just gets better with age. Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review Praise for William Shakespeare: Complete Works“Remarkable . . . makes Shakespeare’s extraordinary accomplishment more vivid than ever.”—James Shapiro, professor, Columbia University, bestselling author of A Year in the Life of Shakespeare: 1599 “A feast of literary and historical information.”—The Wall Street Journal

From the Publisher Hilarious fun, this early comedy is filled with the merry violence of slapstick and farce. When two sets of twins, separated and apparently lost to each other, all end up in the rowdy, rollicking city of Ephesus, the stage is set for mix-ups, mayhem, and mistaken identity--plus the timeless puns, jokes, gags, and suspense that makes this play a wonderful theatrical frolic and a brilliant tour de force of language and laughter.

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. A great place to start reading Shakespeare - just read more! By Craig Matteson One of the problems that great artists present to us is where to begin in getting to know their works. Their masterworks are often so full of what they have spent a lifetime developing that most of it is lost on those who have not yet put in a significant amount of effort becoming familiar with that artist's style and means of expression. Yet, if one begins with their apprentice works one may become discouraged because they lack the miracles of the masterworks. So, where does one begin?Shakespeare offers the reader an additional challenge of an English that is removed in style and idiom from us by 400 years. It is not an insurmountable challenge. In fact, it is quite easy to overcome with a bit of time reading it and getting into the flow. It just seems strange in the beginning, but it really does become easy to read once you spend some time with it. However, getting over that small hill has kept many from enjoying the glories of Shakespeare. This play, "The Comedy of Errors", is clearly an early work. It has many virtues, but despite them it does not offer much of what we really value in Shakespeare. It is a very fine play and is constructed very well. It is a wonderful first work to read of Shakespeare because it is short and has a very simple plot. The new reader does not have to spend much effort contemplating characters or the immense subtlety of language of the great works. Its charms are direct and what it has to offer is pretty much on the surface of the words. The plot is, like all farces, ridiculous. It involves twin brothers who are served by twin slaves. They are separated early in life and when the play opens one set does not know the other exists. One set (the Antipholus and Dromio from Syracuse) visits Ephesus where the other set (the Antipholus and Dromio of Ephesus) lives. The play involves people confusing the two sets to the bewilderment of those suffering from the confusion. It really is quite funny. Of course, eventually, all is resolved to everyone's delight. This edition, like all of the individual editions Arden offers of these plays, has a wonderful opening essay that offers a great deal of background on the play including a discussion of its performance history, sources, and discussion of the play itself. The appendices in the back offer excerpts from the sources and some brief information on the Gray's Inn performance of 1594.If you desire to study Shakespeare and are willing to spend time reading many of his plays, "The Comedy of Errors" is a good work to start with just to ease into the language and get a feel for some of the conventions of Elizabethan theater. Just don't stop here. Shakespeare has so much more to offer that you owe it to yourself to continue your exploration of this supreme artist.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. hilariously confusing By Chelsea The Comedy of Errors is about two sets of twins that were separated during their childhood years. The younger twins decide to take the names of their older siblings out of respect. This causes many mishaps between the twins and the people they encounter. Antipholus and Dromio of Syracuse set out to Ephesus to look for their siblings and this is where the misadventures begin. This play is classified as a comedy. The beginning starts out with Antipholuses father being sentenced to death. Further into the play it begins to very funny. There are so many details and confusions that you can't help but to be lost and confused about the plot. This play is enjoyable and will continue to keep your interest throughout the play. The mishaps start out as comical and eventually become more serious. People begin to be accused of crimes they did not commit and two innocent people are sent to jail. Shakespeare gradually builds up the suspense throughout the play and then ends the play with a scene where the characters are given reason to the previous incidents. The irony of the story and the constant confusion of the story will cause you to begin reading and not be able to stop until you have completely finished the play. The many jokes and puns in the play will also contribute to your amusement. Like my humanities teacher says, "You don't understand it? GOOD! That means that Shakespeare did his job well." The main purpose of this play is to completely confuse you and make you laugh while doing it. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is in need of a laugh and an intellectual challenge.

This one, The Comedy of Errors, is indeed a silly-funny play, which I assume is why the sound effects are so, well, silly and funny. Although I see why they did the sounds that way, it's distracting to me. A little too much slapstick, even in a slapstick kinda play.Otherwise, the action and actors are easy enough to follow in this fun, fun play. You might consider listening to the program via a library check-out before buying, if possible, to make sure you'll enjoy the style of sound effects.

Blues Hands, by Joseph A. Rosen

Review Many books have been published over the years pictorially depicting blues artists at work and play. So you might well ask, what is different about Blues Hands that would make you buy another? The clue is in the title. All musicians need hands to play and often vocalists too, to visually amplify aspects of the lyrics. The book opens with a quote from Willie Dixon; The Blues is the roots, everything else is the fruits. So here are some of the fruits in a unique perspective from the camera of Joe Rosen, drawn from over thirty years of covering the American blues scene. What lifts a photograph from a mere visual recording of a subject to an art form is the skill of the photographer. Inherent in that skill is a passionate interest and understanding of the subject matter and the technical abilities to fulfil it in the final print. Joe has it all in spades. Until you come across a book of this nature you dont realise how hands are as unique as faces and often reflect the character and experiences of the owners, especially those of the older generation. The photographs are enhanced towards the back of the book by potted histories of the artists careers to date and in some cases eulogies, drawn from Joes knowledge of them. Youll want this one on your bookshelf. - Mike Owens, Blues Matters June 2016

About the Author Joseph A. Rosen is a freelance photographer based in New York City. His music clients are among the greatest names in Blues, Jazz, R&B, Soul, Rock, Cajun, and Zydeco, as well as record companies, management groups and music publications.

By Edward Soye Blues Enhuastiast and Photographer has come up with an interesting concept of Blues Photographs by concentrating on the hands of performers. As would be expected he has some great shots however this is not a book that will be looked at more than occasionally. Recommended to anyone interested in blues photography and with reservations to all others.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Beautiful photography of soulful artists. By stickerooni This review originally published in www.lookingforagoodbook.com. Rated 4.25 of 5There is something very calming in blues music (the term means 'melancholy') and photographer Joseph A. Rosen has managed to capture that calmness in his book, Blues Hands.Great music tells a story as do great photos and the two together are sweet music. The photo on the cover, as depicted above, is pretty typical of the sort of photos within. I absolutely loved these close-ups of the hands of these remarkable artists. Most show a life of hard work and love (just look at the way the neck of the guitar is being cradled and played!). But I was equally taken with the instruments. Again, most showed instruments that are well-worn and likely to have traveled with the artist for most of his/her life. These are really tremendous and the photos capture the give and take of the artist and the instrument and the synchronicity of the two together. My only 'complaint' here is that there are too many photos that are not of the hands of the artists. For instance, in the photo of James Brown, his hand is blurry but his face is crystal clear. This is the sort of photo I could see in nearly any music magazine. Same for Shakura S'aida, or Irma Thomas. Compare these to a photo like that of Alexis P. Suter, in which the focus is the hand and the face is blurry, and I'm much more taken with the hand picture.A few others, in which we see the whole artist (or most of the artist) are also much less appealing. The one exception might be the photo of Levon Helm and Hubert Sumlin - in part because their hands are still the focal point of the photo.I did not know everyone included in the book and there is a really nice, mini-bio (along with a mini-photo to remind you who it is) at the end of the book. All in all, this is a wonderful coffee-table style book that anyone interested in Blues, music, or wonderful photography should enjoy.Looking for a good book? Blues Hands, by Joseph A. Rosen, is a photography book that tells some wonderful stories, with pictures, of Blues artists and is well worth having!I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher, through Edelweiss, in exchange for an honest review.

When your 8 year old daughter randomly blurts out the phrase “Poop Squirrel” while waiting for the school bus you know the apple does not fall far from the tree. This debut collection of essays from Finn Blakkatt showcases the humorous outcomes of anyone with bipolar or who aspires to visit both poles. Witty, irreverent and decidedly off-center; Blakkatt shares a collection of sadly funny life stories while also attempting to solve life’s many simple mysteries. From exploring the logical side of scatological outcomes at a local Home Depot to impersonating anyone to get ahead in life, Blakkatt attempts to break the mold of droll intellectualism. From his cynical foray into the restaurant business and fisticuffs with God to his inability to control any bodily function; Blakkatt brings a decidedly outré perspective to a life well lived.

Poop Squirrel: Essays by Finn Blakkatt, by Finn Blakkatt

About the Author Finn Blakkatt is a rather tall, but somewhat short sighted individual aged between 18 (sexually), 48 (mentally) and 98 (physically). He had long bleach-blond hair in his youth. What is left of his hair is now brown and flowing in random directions from his balding head. Finn can frequently be seen exercising in a manner more akin to a slow walk or stumble. Finn resides with his family, who refuse to acknowledge his make-believe literary prowess, in the bustling Mid-Atlantic region where Delaware meets Maryland and then saddles up to Pennsylvania. When not writing Finn can be found fly fishing in Colorado, drinking expensive box wine in Norway or watching his son’s many youth soccer games while he and his daughter casually make fun of random strangers. Finn’s wife also makes fun of strangers but does so, unwittingly, in their presence at places like the Philadelphia Zoo.
