Ten Little, Nine Little, Eight Little Puritans. And then there were none! When the haunted Bed and Breakfast in Salem’s Crossing, Nebraska, fills up with Puritan Descendants coming to a reunion, the BOOB Girls venture in to help their old nemesis, Scooter McKooter. They admire the ten little Puritan dolls on display near the dining room entrance, and when the real Puritans – Diewell Barebones, Patience Evenow, Abstinence Evermore and others come to check in, those little dolls begin to disappear. Worse yet, so do the Puritans. After Mary Rose McGill becomes a kidnap victim herself, the chaos begins. With the help of Geoffrey the mastiff, the girls “sniff” out the clues and find that even a place as far away as Butch Sleezer’s Fertility Clinic can house then evict questionable characters. Who done it? Who is really driving the expensive carriage pulled by the black horse that elicits deep growls from Geoffrey and curiosity from the girls? And what about the mysterious writer appearing at the Shut Up And Drink Tavern? There’s a vet named Jane Pawter and serious competition for Scooter at the Scenic Point Resort as well as four helpful hands from Wiley Vondra and Alphonso Greatwood.

Some good recommendations for defending against "unusual" White openings after 1 d4 By Jill Malter If you play chess, you'll have to face 1 d4 fairly often. And if you answer 1...Nf6, you may be walking right into a possible Trompowsky (2 Bg5), a Torre (2 Nf3 and 3 Bg5), a London (2 Nf3 and 3 Bf5), a Colle (2 Nf3 and 3 e3), a Veresov (2 Nc3 d5 3 Bg5), or even a Blackmar-Diemer Gambit (2 Nc3 d5 3 e4). Even if you play 1...d5, there are versions of all these systems that are still on. I guess one could play 1...f5 (the Dutch), but even then White can play 2 Bg5 or 2 Nf3 and 3 Bg5, or even 2 e4 or 2 g3 for that matter. At least, if you play 1...f5, you'll be able to answer 2 Nc3 with 2 ...Nf6, which might confuse a Veresov player, since 1 d4 d5 2 Nc3 f5 3 Bf4 is ghastly for Black.Still, most of us will need to find a way to defend against unusual lines after 1 d4 Nf6 or 1 d4 d5. And that is where this book comes in handy. Cox explains how to get back to the lines you wanted or to get a good game against these "problem openings."After 1 d4 Nf6 2 Bg5, White is clearly hoping to take your Knight and double your pawns. Or, after 2...Ne4 3 Bf4 d5 4 f3 Nf6 5 e4 get a Blackmar-Diemer gambit with an extra tempo. So Cox recommends 2...e6 here, and he gives us some good lines for Black. White can also play 1 d4 d5 2 Bg5, but that's not really the Tromp, and the author shows how Black can do well after 2...h6 3 Bh4 c6.In the Torre attack, after 1 d4 Nf6 2 Nf3, Cox does show how to play 2...e6 for Black. But he strongly recommends 2...d5 3 Bg5 Ne4, and I certainly agree. Of course, you will have to be able to defend a Queen's Gambit after 3 c4. The same is true for the London and the Colle. After 1 d4 Nf6 2 Nf3, Cox explains how to play 2...e6, but recommends 2...d5 3 Bf4 c5 and 2...d5 3 e3 Bf5.The Veresov goes 1 d4 Nf6 2 Nc3 d5 3 Bg5, and Cox recommends the exciting 3...c5, which means letting White play a Chigorin with a move in hand. I like this line for Black and I think it is worth learning. Many folks accept the Blackmar-Diemer gambit. But Cox gives us an Awful Warning about what can happen. A Master with Black tried 1 d4 Nf6 2 Nc3 d5 3 e4 dxe4 4 f3 exf3 5 Nxf3 e6 6 Bg5 Be7 7 Bd3 Nbd7 8 0-0 0-0 9 Qe1 c5 10 Qh4 g6 (Black is already totally ripped) 11 Ne5 Re8 12 Nxf7 Qc7 13 Bxg6 hxg6 14 Qh8+ Kxf7 15 Qh7+ Kf8 16 Bh6 mate. So Cox very reasonably recommends 3...Nxe4 here (the Hubsch Defence), in order to answer 4 Nxe4 dxe4 5 f3? with 5...e5. And after 1 d4 d5 2 e4 dxe4 3 Nc3, he wants 3...e5.The next unusual lines we see are 1 d4 Nf6 2 c4 e6 3 Nf3 c5 without 4 d5. Cox shows how Black can still play some form of a Benoni or Nimzo-Indian against 4 g3 or 4 Nc3 here. But that leaves 4 e3 as a problem. Black can play a Caro-Kann and defend against a Panov-Botvinnik attack with 4...cxd4. But Black may not want to be on what I would consider the wrong side of an isolated Queen pawn attack, so Cox recommends 4...a6 and 5...d5 (threatening dxc4).The book concludes with some rare lines. 1 d4 Nf6 2 c4 e6 3 Bg5 tries to avoid the Nimzo, but Cox explains that 3...c5 works well for Black here, as do 3...d5 and even the move that White was trying to avoid, 3...Bb4+ (although White will indeed play 4 Nd2 rather than 4 Nc3). 1 d4 Nf6 2 c4 e6 3 g3 aims at a Catalan after 3...d5, but Cox shows that Black can avoid this with 3...b5. 1 d4 Nf6 2 e3 is met by 2...c5. And finally, 1 d4 Nf6 2 g3 d5 leads to a very good version of the Slav for Black. This is a useful and well-written book, and I recommend it.

Short, incomplete, and riddled with errors By Peter June It appears as if the people who have reviewed this book on Amazon glanced at a few lines and wrote a great review of it. After taking the time to go through every chapter of this book, writing down the lines and analyzing with friends (2000+ rated) or Fritz, the book comes up far short. From the get go, the reader should be a little worried. You get through the first two pages of the Trompowsky when all of a sudden a game is not only mis-cited, but also missing a move from white and from black. It's the first chapter, first recommended line (did anyone here READ the variations?) and already the editing is shoddy. Although I went into Chessbase and dredged the game up, clearly the editor should have caught that. This is a repeated pattern throughout the book.Nitpicking aside, what about the content? Are the recommended lines good? Against the Trompowsky, Cox does a solid job covering how black should play. Unfortunately, it's not one of the books that shows the reader full games (which is useful, since many times endgames in the London, Colle, etc. are very intricate). For the Blackmar-Diemer, the clever counter-gambit is very cool and I've found it's pretty successful. However, after analyzing it for a few hours with some friends, numerous errors and missed moves crop up. Of course there are some lines that have been unplayed, but if Fritz gives a clear +.25 over all the other lines, the author's doing something wrong.Another problem I encountered is that many times the text is in the wrong place. I have quite a few malicious feelings toward the London and Colle (and Cox offers some witty banter on all the openings as well), but at times the introduction to the chapters are TOO full of the Cox's commentary. There is a de-emphasis on the actual lines and little explication of important move sequences where there should be.It gets two stars because it gives good lines against the Trompowsky, London (though there are lots of holes the reader needs to work out for themselves), and I suppose the Torre. However, the book is simply too small and too thin to be as meaningful as it should be. The editing significantly detracts from its readibility and many times at the end of variations the reader is left wondering "have I really equalized?" as well as "what do I do now?"It's a great idea, but if you're looking for a book to cover that hole in chess literature, perhaps it's better worth your money to just buy a book on the Colle or London.

A unique, much-needed book By bckm For MANY years, I played (as Black) 1.d4 Nf6, and went confidently into the mass of theory that was the King's Indian Defense, fearlessly fianchettoing my KB and salivating at White's king, fantasizing about the upcoming regicide about to hit White. Even if I lost, I looked forward to a full-blooded battle. Then came a move other than 2.c4, and I started to roll my eyes. White played something I considered "lame" - for example, the Colle System. I ended up losing more games than I should have, and it took me way too long to realize that I could easily handle the full-blooded battles, but when White didn't want to give me what I wanted, I would lose my attention, fall asleep, and give the game to White.I finally decided that I needed to play something less committal (on my part), and after toying with the Budapest Defense (1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e5), the Benoni, and the Queen's Gambit, I came to the scheme of 1...e6, followed by the Nimzo-Indian, Bogo-Indian, or Queen's Indian. I played ...e6 first because I'm a die-hard French Defense addict, and I wanted to give White one last chance to right the wrong he committed by playing 1.d4.While these are less critical lines, and I haven't won as many games with them as I did with the King's Indian, I haven't lost as many either, and I find myself in the game for a much longer period of time than I did when I fianchettoed my KB. But there was an amazing dearth of good books on the annoying sidelines that John Cox covers in this book. Here, he gives coherent, understandable schemes to combat these "mosquito openings" as I call them, these openings that are more annoying than fear-inspiring. Cox writes very well, covering the major sidelines such as the London, the Torre, the Tromp (which was the reason I converted from the King's Indian to the ...e6 stuff), the Colle, and the Veresov (which I haven't ever faced). Cox covers these lines with a respectable system, the basics of which are easy to understand, but doesn't form one of those "systems against everything". His coverage, of, for example, the London System, is MUCH better than that of the "Winning With the London System" book I reviewed elsewhere. Basically, his system consists of ...e6, ...Nf6, and ...c5 or ...d5. He realistically approaches these lines for Black as not likely to put the White openings out of business, but at least allow Black to get through the opening and into the middlegame.I heartily recommend this book.

An important contribution to the history of photography that approaches the biographies and creations of thirty-eight great photographers from a new angle

In the history of photography, the lives of the major personalities behind the lens are often as captivating as the images they have left behind. Yet, while certain photographs have become world famous, indelibly printed on the cultural consciousness, the stories of the photographers have been all too often distorted, obfuscated, or overlooked, and their social and political environments misunderstood or forgotten.Lives of the Great Photographers brings together the engaging and entertaining biographies of thirty-eight pioneers in the field, selected, carefully researched, and narrated by respected photography expert Juliet Hacking. The entries evoke the lives and backgrounds of these landmark figures, bringing new light to their work and forging a better understanding of how they pioneered new techniques and approaches. The text is accompanied by a beautifully curated sampling of images, including many rarely seen portraits and self-portraits. With entries on Margaret Bourke-White, Brassai, Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Walker Evans, André Kertész, Eadweard Muybridge, Edward Steichen, and many others, Lives of the Great Photographers captures from a new angle the contributions of some of the most masterful image-makers in history. 101 illustrations

By Jack Flack I just recently ordered this book and have not been able to put it down since it arrived. I am a photographer, photographs collector, and currently working towards a PhD in art history focusing on photography, so this book definitely appeals to me. I love the way that the book is arranged giving a short and interesting biography for each of 38 great photographers. As stated in the introduction the list is by no means exhaustive, but for the scholar or enthusiast the list includes many familiar names and some pleasant surprises. The book itself is very well made appropriately coinciding with the high quality of the writing and research. The book is so solid if feels like it will last forever. The images are strong reproductions, many of which I have never seen before. The image used in the section on Doisneau is perhaps one of my new favorites.I would recommend this book to anyone interested in art. It is a must have for a photography enthusiast or professional, and is a great addition to any personal library. I am very glad I bought it.

4 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Nik Turner embodies the Spirit Of Hawkwind By Errol Nik Turner was a founding and eminently influential member of Hawkwind. He did leave in '76, but did return briefly in the 80s for a short while. Let's face it, Nik was part of the most seminal and important period in the history of Hawkwind. The albums he appeared on are the stuff of legend. Sure, there was a falling out between Nik and Dave Brock and it's sad that they aren't still playing together. However, Nik's historic take on Hawkwind is valid, important, and incredibly entertaining. The band did continue with Nik and there we some great things in the post Nik Turner period ... but who can deny how awesome 1969-1976 were? I mean ... c'mon ... Space Ritual! This whole debate is just as sad as Roger Waters vs. Pink Floyd.Do yourself a favor and try to catch Nik Turner's Hawkwind on tour now. He truly embodies the Spirit Of Hawkwind.

Doug DuBois (born 1960) was first introduced to a group of teenagers from the Russell Heights housing estate while he was an artist-in-residence in Cobh, on the southwest coast of Ireland. He was fascinated by the insular neighborhood, in which "everyone seems to be someone's cousin, former girlfriend, or spouse." DuBois gained entry when two participants of a workshop he taught took him to a local hangout spot, opening his eyes to a world of not-quite-adults, struggling through the last days of their childhood. Over the course of five years, DuBois returned to Russell Heights. Combining portraits, spontaneous encounters and collaborative performances, the images in Doug DuBois: My Last Day at Seventeen hover between documentary and fiction. A follow-up to DuBois' acclaimed first book, All the Days and Nights, this volume examines the uncertainties of growing up in Ireland today while highlighting the unique relationship between artist and subject.

Within the walls of his tattoo shop, Dead Ink, Lars hides in plain sight from the past he walked away from. But he still battles every day with the dark urges that drove him from his position as the Grim Reaper. Then Faith Dover appears, seeking his aid, and Lars discovers that he isn’t as hardened as he thought. On the run from her kidnapper, Faith stumbles into Dead Ink, towing in enough secrets and baggage to weigh down the dead. But Lars isn’t the savior she hopes him to be. Dark and seductive, he might be more dangerous than the people she’s running from. When he discovers her suspicious ties to a crew of murderers, will he help her or cast her out to the craziness that has overtaken the world? Can Faith win the heart of a soul incapable of trust? A note from the author: This is a companion romance novel that takes place in the Karma urban fantasy world. It runs parallel to Fated's timeline. It can be read alone or in addition to the series as the final book. Genre: Paranormal Romance Length: 67,000 words

When Faith first laid eyes on Lars she wasn’t sure if she should stay or run. He was dangerous that much she was sure of, but she was still so drawn to him. Even though she didn’t have anywhere else to go she felt safe with the guys and would do anything for them.Another excellent book by Donna Augustine! Love this series and was not disappointed. One of my favorite things with a series is when the author does side books and lets us see more about some of the supporting characters and Dead Ink was spot on! I’d like to see the stories that go with Cutty, Bic, and Angus as well. My heart hurt in so many places with the stupidity of two people so in love they didn’t see it. Fabulous love story without disconnecting from the rest of the books. I know that Augustine said it’s a standalone read if you want it to be, but I think that by reading the rest of the books in this series first it makes this book all the more enjoyable!

By Debbie Haupt-The Reading Frenzy Dead InkDonna AugustineDonna Augustine continues her dark paranormal romance Karma series with Dead Ink staring Lars the tattoo artist aka Grim Reaper, retired who’ve readers have met before and brand new heroine Faith, a murder victim who ends up immortal instead of dead. Her world building is an alarming portrait of our current world in a whole lot of trouble, and rocks. Her dialogue is a heady mix of street-wise gritty and quirky humor and her characters range from funny to scary and are all exceptionally well rounded. It was nice reconnecting with friends from past tales and getting to know the stars of this story. I especially love the bittersweet love story and the hope Donna instills in the tale and the series in spite of all the hopelessness. The universe is going to hell in a hand basket and usually, Lars the immortal formerly known as death is on the periphery of all the madness of whatever is screwing with the balance between good and evil, just minding his own business running his tattoo shop, Dead Ink, I mean he is retired. Then she walked into his parlor looking like a deranged wood nymph and mentions the name of his and apparently the world’s newest worst immortal enemy.Faith Dover’s had a rough week, first she died even though she’s still a little foggy about how it all happened. Then she ends up in the lair of a diabolical bad guy named Malokin, who apparently wants her to work for him, doing what she’s so not going to find out. So when she finds a chance to escape she takes it along with the name and address of a man on Malokin’s hit list. Now here she is, staring at said man on said list and it’s looking like she’s jumped from one scary frying pan into a blazing inferno.

I found Lars super sexy which was interesting considering his old job.I really would like to see the other guys have a stories of their own. This one was more romance with some Paranormal but more romance . I really enjoyed it! I have liked all of Donna Augustine's books so looking forward to more books to read!

The beggar's opera, by John Gay

Review “Offers a useful performance history of the satirical ballad-opera...the New Mermaids [edition] includes music as well as words for the songs.” ―Plays International

From the Back Cover The great lords and powerful public officials of early 18th century England are represented as highwaymen and thieves in this deliciously satirical ballad opera. In addition to its burlesque of the contemporary vogue for Italian operatic styles, John Gay's 1728 masterpiece ridicules a broad spectrum of political figures and social conventions—marriage, lawyers, trade, and even Walpole, the prime minister. Depicting crime and vice at every level of society, The Beggar's Opera offers a witty and powerful indictment of greed, hypocrisy, and corruption in all social classes. When Peachum, a receiver of stolen goods, discovers that a notorious highwayman has eloped with his daughter, the wily old villain turns informer and collects the reward money as his prospective son-in-law is hauled off to prison. Events take an increasingly absurd turn as the dashing outlaw romances the jailer's daughter and effects an escape, only to return to the shadow of the gallows for a farcical climax that parodies the sentimental tragedy of the day.The Beggar's Opera is in the satirical tradition of Swift and Pope. Its enduring relevance was recognized two centuries later by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, who used it as the basis for their landmark musical, The Threepenny Opera. This attractive, inexpensive edition of an influential comic gem will be applauded by theater lovers, students of literature and history, and other readers.Dover (1999) republication of a standard edition.

About the Author John Gay (1685–1732) was an English poet and dramatist. He is best remembered for The Beggar's Opera (1728), set to music by Johann Christoph Pepusch. The characters, including Captain Macheath and Polly Peachum, became household names. John Gay did nothing to curry the favor of the government by The Beggar's Opera, in which Sir Robert Walpole was caricatured. This famous piece, which was said to have made "Rich gay and Gay rich", was an innovation in many respects. The satire of the play has a double allegory. The characters of Peachum and Macheath represent the famous highwayman and gangster Jonathan Wild and the cockney housebreaker Jack Sheppard. At the same time, Jonathan Wild was understood to represent Robert Walpole, whose government had been tolerant of Wild's thievery and the South Sea directors' escape from punishment. Under cover of the thieves and highwaymen who figured in it was disguised a satire on society, for Gay made it plain that in describing the moral code of his characters he had in mind the corruptions of the governing class. Part of the success of The Beggar's Opera may have been due to the acting of Lavinia Fenton, afterwards Duchess of Bolton, in the part of Polly Peachum.

12 of 14 people found the following review helpful. Crime, Love and the Opera By A Customer The Beggar's Opera by John Gay is an artful yet honest representation of London in the early 1700s. As the Editor's introduction notes, it is a political satire that brings to life the actions of such notorious figures as Jonathan Wild and Robert Walpole. In the Beggar's introduction the reader is made aware of the author's intent to mock the recent craze of the Italian Opera, which is considered by Gay to be thouroughly "unnatural." Immediately after that we are exposed to the corruption of a city offical, Peachum (whose name means "to inform against a fellow criminal"), as he is choosing which criminals should live, as they are still profitable, and who should not, as they have turned honest. Peachum's character of both an arch-criminal and law man is interesting enough in his daily dealings; add to that his daughter's recent marriage to a highwayman (who the father then plots to send to the gallows). Not to mention what happens when the highwayman runs into an old aquaintance of his, who visibly shows his earlier affection, and you have what makes to be a highly entertaining, emotional, and educational story of 18th century London. The dialogue is well written, and the only problem a modern reader might have is the operatic aspect. I suspect that the mockery of the opera is not felt as much when read but rather when performed. Note to reader: it makes it much easier to understand if you read the introduction. There you will find instances of "real" London that the playwrite is satirizing. For all lovers of period English pieces who enjoy a cynical wit.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Birth of the Modern Musical - John Gay's Genius Overwhelms Italian Opera By Michael Wischmeyer From its first performance, January 29, 1728, The Beggar's Opera was an absolute success. In that period a box office hit might be continued for four or five nights. Remarkably, The Beggar's Opera ran sixty-two nights in London, and was produced nearly every year thereafter to 1886. Its popularity quickly spread to Wales and Scotland, France and Germany, and even to the New England colonies (and became a favorite of George Washington).A London revival in 1920 ran 1,463 performances. A Beggar's Opera Club had membership limited to those that had seen at least 40 performances. Bertholt Brecht's twentieth century version, Three Penny Opera, was immensely successful too. A jazzy rendition of one of Brecht's songs, Mack the Knife, became Number One on the Hit Parade in the early 1960s.John Gay's innovative musical appealed to the masses with its rollicking, rowdy, English lyrics overlain on old, sentimental melodies. Formal, highly structured, Italian opera was shoved aside by this novel musical form. The cast was equally original, being comprised of cutthroats, pickpockets, thieves, streetwalkers, highwaymen, and a corrupt jailer. Polly Peachum, the sweet, trusting daughter of the roguish Peachum, was the only honest character in the play. Miss Lavina Fenton, perhaps the best theatrical singer of her day, became immensely popular for her role as Polly and at end of the run - the sixty-two performances - she married the Duke of Bolton and retired from acting. The audience was quick to associate Newgate Prison with Whitehall; the deceitful, avaricious Peachum (Polly's father) with Robert Walpole, the Prime Minister; Macheath's band of rogues (Jemmy Twitcher, Crook-Fingered Jack, Nimming Ned, etc.) with aristocratic courtiers, and Macheath's women of the streets (Mrs. Coaxer, Dolly Trull, Mrs. Vixen, Molly Brazen, etc.) with ladies of high society. This short three-act play has some forty-five scenes, almost all with musical interludes. Gay holds this myriad of scenes together through nearly continuous action, more akin to a modern film than to the conventional eighteenth century play. The Penguin Classics edition (titled The Beggar's Opera, as might be expected), edited by Brian Loughrey and T. O. Treadwell, is quite good and not difficult to find.Another good choice (and my favorite) is The Beggar's Opera published by Barron's Educational Series, edited by Benjamin Griffith, and illustrated by Keogh with full page ink-line drawings of the key characters. The lengthy, three part introduction - the playwright, the play, and the staging - is quite helpful. The initial musical notes are presented along with the lyrics. The Beggar's Opera, Regents Restoration Drama Series, Nebraska University Press, 1969 may be more suitable for English majors as it offers a scholarly introduction by Edgar V. Roberts. An extensive appendix, some 140 pages, is a compilation of the music of The Beggar's Opera with keyboard accompaniments, edited by Edward Smith. The Beggar's Opera and Companion Pieces, Crofts Classics, 1966, edited by C. F. Burgess is particularly valuable - and somewhat unique - for including Gay's enjoyable poem Trivia (subtitled The Art of Walking the Streets of London), other poems (Newgate's Garland, 'Twas When the Seas Were Roaring, Sweet William's Farewell, Molly Mog, An Epistle to a Lady, and The Hare and Many Friends), and extracts from various letters. A possible drawback may be the absence of musical scores in the text, although the lyrics are embedded within the play itself.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. This Kindle edition NOT the same as the Penguin which others review... By Words can be music The Penguin edition of John Gay's Beggar's Opera is indeed a fine piece of work - at least, the edition in paperback edited by Treadwell and Loughrey has terrific footnotes and a fine introductory essay that places The Beggar's Opera in the context of its time. The context includes not only information about the Italian operas that it parodies, but about the real people such as Jonathan Wild, the thief-taker, on whom Mr. Peachum was modeled, and Robert Walpole, the Georgian power broker and womanizer who was the original of Captain Macheath. Fascinating. The dark Satanic mills of Blake's time originated in Georgian times, in the east London of Hogarth's gin mills, which were an economic stimulus pure and simple, to benefit the rich by encouraging the degeneracy of the poor. Your appreciation of Gay's ironic opera will be enhanced by knowing this background. But you will NOT find it in this edition, which as far as I can tell from the sample, has ONLY the text, no footnotes (footnotes are quite clarifying unless you are an expert in street argot of the time) and no introductory essay. BLEAH. Why does Amazon persist in putting reviews of one edition to work to sell something else that is quite inferior? If you want JUST the text, get the freebie. This isn't worth $3.

Bluebeard, published in 1987, is Vonnegut's meditation on art, artists, surrealism, and disaster.

Meet Rabo Karabekian, a moderately successful surrealist painter who we meet late in life and see struggling (like all of Vonnegut's key characters) with the dregs of unresolved pain and the consequences of brutality. Loosely based on the legend of Bluebeard (best realized in Bela Bartok's one-act opera), the novel follows Karabekian through the last events in his life, which are heavy with women, painting, artistic ambition, artistic fraudulence, and as of yet unknown consequence. Vonnegut's intention here is not so much satirical (although the contemporary art scene would be easy enough to deconstruct), nor is it documentary (although Karabekian does carry elements of Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko). Instead Vonnegut is using art for the same purpose he used science fiction clichés in Slaughterhouse-Five: as a filter through which he can illuminate the savagery, cruelty, and essentially comic misdirection of human existence.

Listeners will recognize familiar Vonnegut character types and archetypes as they drift in and out through the background; meanwhile Karabekian, betrayed and betrayer, sinks through a bottomless haze of recollection. Like most of Vonnegut's late works, this is both science fiction and cruel, contemporary realism at once, using science fiction as metaphor for human damage as well as failure to perceive.

Listeners will find that Vonnegut's protagonists can never really clarify for us whether they are ultimately unwitting victims or simple barbarians, leaving it up to the listener to determine in which genre this audiobook really fits, if any at all.

Kindle typos By Dan 5 stars for the Vonnegut book. 1 star for the Kindle edition. This Kindle book is absolutely loaded with typos from poorly scanned and edited OCR. They must have had an unpaid intern take care of it. It goes to show me just how little the publishers care about ebooks, and how they'd like to slow demand for what they think they can't get insane profits from. It wouldn't surprise me if they purposely do a horrible job with every ebook just to get people running back to their precious overpriced paperbacks and hardcovers.Examples of typos:"Tor what?"He, cheat and steal"J already have," she said.Talk about realism]--The author wrote "realism!" in italics so the OCR thinks an italics exclamation point is a bracket. Nobody changed it. How could they miss this stuff? It's not just misspellings but also lack of commas, quotation marks, and so on. It wouldn't be so bad if they weren't on every couple of pages. The first few are no problem, nobody's perfect. But once they become a distraction, it really takes away from the reading experience. The should at the very least have some respect for the late Mr Vonnegut and have an editor do a once over.

Here we have Vonnegut at his most focused on a long time, tearing off page after page that will make you laugh and stop and think at the same time. The story is basically the autobiography of an obscure artist character in Breakfast of Champions, but here he turns Rabo into someone you might think is real, so does his humor and pain cascade off the page. He bounces back and forth between his past and his present at his mansion where he just wants to be left alone, in the great Vonnegut tradition (and he doesn't need time travel this time out), comparing and contrasting the worst moments of his life with the best and trying to figure out what it all means. To me, this is one of Vonnegut's most human novels, his sense of satire and wit are still apparent and sharp but the entire story isn't devoted to Vonnegut making some barbed point about us and society as a whole, it's there but there's more time put into having get to know Rabo has someone who might live down the street from us. I devoured this book and found myself satisified, even the long anticipated secret of what lies in the potato barn was well worth the suspense (and it really is), this is the most fun I've had with a Vonnegut book in long time. Probably one of his more obscure works, it deserves to be read along with his other classics. It may not reach those peaks but it comes darn close.

By Mike Stone Rabo Karabekian was first introduced in "Breakfast of Champions", a minor character in a surreal story. Here he gets the full treatment, and comes off as another one of those great curmudgeon characters. Only in the hands of Vonnegut, he becomes much more. He is crotchety, bitter, cynical, and several steps from senility. But he still has a wonderful memory for his past, and Vonnegut creates for him a fictional autobiography that's fascinating and endearing. And a laugh riot.Rabo has one eye. Rabo was an artist of astounding technical talent, yet helped form the Abstract Expressionist movement (along with his friends the fictional Terry Kitchen and the very real Jackson Pollock). Rabo has seen the best talents of his generation succumb to suicide and self-destruction, yet he is still kicking and screaming at 71. Rabo (guided by Vonnegut) is in the process of pouring his life onto the page, with the encouragement of a mysterious woman who has moved into his home.Vonnegut's greatest accomplishment in the book is the building up of the surprise ending (What the heck is in the barn?) to the point where something astounding should happen, and then drawing up a scene where something astounding happens. It all lives up to the hype, which is a tough thing to do. But I never doubted my man Kurt for a second. He is one of my favourite writers -- for his pointed humour and his deceptively simple prose -- and this is one of his best books. He has managed to create a commentary on the history of war, art, Europe, America, and literature in the twentieth century, by gently leading the reader through a guided tour of one man's life.
