Grammar, documentation, citation of sources, articulation of language, intellectual self-defense. All true, but within the Trojan horse above, I have couched attacks on apathy, the default of cynicism, and endeavored to create a will to overcome suffering and recognize that event for what it is—the circumventing of years in order to attain an identity that is as much yours as is possible..

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Casting a light on apathy By Jake A Martin What makes a good education has been open to interpretation since some of our earliest ancestors began sharing information. There are, of course, several kinds of educations and numberless combinations of teachers and students. To further complicate things, there are arguably more diversions and distractions in the world than ever before. Rather than blame, banish or burn the technology competing with simple, natural human interaction, we'll probably have to embrace it and figure out a way to use it to our societal advantage. But that's hard. Given the odds against getting through to anyone, many have simply chosen to stop caring, which is precisely why it's more important than ever to care about what you do (particularly if you're a teacher because you're kind of instructing the next generation of people how to live.)In Arnold's "Teaching and Becoming the Change Education Needs: Overcoming Apathy in Modern America," he draws inspiration from his own career as both teacher and student. The apathy he speaks of is ultimately a choice that is detrimental not just to the teacher but his or her student. When the enthusiasm isn't there for your subject, others see no reason to fill in the gap for you. Arnold blends what he’s learned from his life, his students, his colleagues, the books he’s read, the movies he’s seen and the poems he’s pondered. A range of sources including The Simpsons episode “Homerpalooza,” the movie “Trainspotting,” Pirsig’s “Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: An Inquiry into Values,” and Updike’s “Rabbit, Run" keep readers wondering what reference will come up next. His argument against apathy is bolstered by anecdotal and referential insight into fear, childhood, discipline, arrogance, humility and teachers' lounge gossip. The book is built on the foundational idea that we can all do things a little better. It's a call for a sense of urgency, enthusiasm and plain thoughtfulness. If it's true we are defined by our opposite, the antithesis of this book would be to "Keeping Everything the Same: Because What's the Point?" Arnold includes a handful of interviews with former students in which they talk about what they've done, what they should have done, who they should have listened to and why. One student reported 27 percent of his teachers were good, which is not only specific but low as well. Many said the good teachers taught them to believe in something and stand up for that belief; to look beyond what their interests are and make new connections; and to never accept the status quo.For teachers looking for the secret to controlling a classroom and holding your students' assumed short attention span, it comes down to little more than a matter of respect. Students can also learn from Arnold's openness regarding his occupation. Hint: There is not a force field around your teacher's desk and they can hear everything you're whispering. An overall fun read with a timely message.

Byron is a poet. And he knows it. The problem is, he's unable to make art out of the mess he has made of his life. The more Byron drinks, the more money he makes. If he can keep up this pace, he might enable his embattled company to stay in the black. Maybe if he doubles down, all those stock options will split, reconcile and multiply. This is his story and he's stuck to it.   Byron is a real piece of work in progress: old enough to own his own condo and pay all his bills most of the time; young enough to be unmarried but understand he is not getting any younger. Byron would love to mix things up and instigate some excitement into his own humble narrative. Unfortunately, a fight scene is not feasible, a car chase is getting too carried away, and a love interest appears to be out of the question. Also, he has to be awake and ready to work in the morning, just like everyone else.   A recovering bartender, Byron struggled to escape the self-destructive restaurant business, but finds that the drinking and drugging of the corporate world are more pervasive--and encouraged--than he could ever have imagined. He finds himself unprepared for life after thirty, and ambivalent about the semi-fortune his stock options might eventually yield. Then, when a rumor circulates that a devastating round of layoffs is scheduled to occur just before Christmas, Byron begins to envision where he'll be when something approximating reality comes crashing down.   Not to Mention a Nice Life examines corporate America during the not-so-quiet storm that preceded the historic economic meltdown of 2008. A literary expansion on "Office Space," this novel provides an answer to a question not enough people have asked: What happened to Holden Caulfield when he grew up? He got a job.

Not to Mention a Nice Life: A Novel, by Sean Murphy

Review "The world of work, life, and love changed seismically in the early 2000s. In Not to Mention a Nice Life, Murphy's masterful storytelling takes us on an honest, searing, sardonic ride through the decade that wasn't." --Jeremy Neuner, co-author of The Rise of the Naked Economy "Not to Mention a Nice Life is a wry, acerbic, and terrifying critique of the notion that there is really nothing left to critique. Modern Corporate America is less an enemy than a state of reality. They have won. We have lost. Read this very funny book. Like, right now. And then pour yourself an ice-cold laudanum." --Sean Beaudoin, author of Wise Young Fool and Welcome Thieves"Sean Murphy's Not to Mention a Nice Life offers a voice rarely seen--that whisper of human suffering that comes from an insular heart. As Byron moves into and through his "Terrible Thirties," and the dot-com boom of wild heights and terrifying drops, we move with him...but we also get to watch, and be that cautious eye which only has to watch, and doesn't have to be. Which is both blessing and curse in this romp of Americana, half Fight Club, half Catcher in the Rye for the middle-aged. Regardless, I'm hooked--and want to stay that way." --Jesse Waters, author of Human Resources"It's early in that lamentable decade of the 2000s, and while the good times continue to roll in corporate America, they won't be rolling for much longer--and no one knows it better than Byron, the Everyman narrator of Sean Murphy's witty and wise firecracker of a debut. If you liked Joshua Ferris's And Then We Came to the End, you'll love Not to Mention a Nice Life." --Greg Olear, author of Totally Killer and Fathermucker

About the Author Sean Murphy has been publishing fiction, reviews (of music, movie, book, food), and essays on the technology industry for almost twenty years. He has appeared on NPR's "All Things Considered" and been quoted in USA Today, The New York Times, The Huffington Post, Forbes and AdAge. In addition, he is an associate editor at The Weeklings, where he contributes a monthly column. He writes regularly for PopMatters, and his work has also appeared in Punchnel's, The Village Voice, The Good Men Project, All About Jazz, AlterNet, Web Del Sol, Elephant Journal and Northern Virginia Magazine. Sharply drawn, relatable characters keep the plot moving along briskly, and the author's unique, trademark style is poignant and clever. A must-read for those living through this difficult stage of life, but mostly for those who have gratefully moved along.

Maybe you’re deluding yourself now that start-up life is any different. But that purgatory is familiar. Like faces at the end of the bar. Like conversations with neighbors in hallways repeated thoughtlessly according to ritual. You knew you hadn’t achieved your dreams, mostly because you still didn’t know what your dreams were, and you were confused by the success that you had stumbled across so far. You weren’t a boat adrift on the sea of adulthood, but you had run aground too many times to pretend you had any conscious purpose to your life.Sean Murphy’s new book, Not to Mention a Nice Life, is a wickedly sharp and achingly insightful view into the modern day boy in the bubble. An unflinching tribute to the years when anything was possible and nothing mattered. Pick it up and find camaraderie, catharsis, or maybe both.

These, according to me, are boring old jokes and memes that we laughed on but they are history now. That's why they didn't produce anything from me and I was disappointed, to tell you the truth.

Hedda Gabler is a play written by Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen. It was published in 1890, and it premiered in 1891 in Germany to negative reviews, but has subsequently gained recognition as a classic of realism, nineteenth century theatre, and world drama. The title character Hedda, is considered one of the great dramatic roles in theatre, and portrayals have been known to vary widely. Hedda's married name is Hedda Tesman; Gabler is her maiden name. On the subject of the title, Ibsen wrote: "My intention in giving it this name was to indicate that Hedda as a personality is to be regarded rather as her father's daughter than her husband's wife."

Hedda Gabler, by Henrik Ibsen

About the Author Born in 1828, Henrik Ibsen was a Norwegian playwright and poet, often associated with the early Modernist movement in theatre. Determined to become a playwright from a young age, Ibsen began writing while working as an apprentice pharmacist to help support his family. Though his early plays were largely unsuccessful, Ibsen was able to take employment at a theatre where he worked as a writer, director, and producer. Ibsen s first success came with Brand and Peter Gynt, and with later plays like A Doll s House, Ghosts, and The Master Builder he became one of the most performed playwrights in the world, second only to William Shakespeare. Ibsen died in his home in Norway in 1906 at the age of 78.1856-1924Juliet Stevenson is a British actress on stage and screen and notably a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company. She has also appeared in popular films such as "Bend It Like Beckham" and "Mona Lisa Smile". She was honored as Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. She received further recognition when she was nominated for several BAFTA Awards, and she earned an Olivier Award for her role in "Death and the Maiden".Emma Fielding is an award-winning actress who has appeared in numerous television shows, films, and plays. A graduate of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, she has worked for the Royal National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company. She has also appeared on Broadway, in "Private Lives", and in the West End, in "Rock n Roll".

A masterpiece that examines the life and motives of a woman By Israel Drazin This is a free Amazon book containing a great play by Ibsen: Hedda Gabler. The paly raises many questions and is thought provoking. For example, is Hedda selfish, bored, and tired of her marriage, and does she need to relieve her frustrations by interfering in other people’s lives and hurting them, as many readers contend? Or, is this an over-simplification of her character and motive? Is the play obscure? Thirty-three year old beautiful and vivacious Hedda Gabler has just returned from her long honeymoon to a large beautiful house that she talked her husband into purchasing. In fact, as she states in the play, it was this purchase, not love, for she does not love her husband, that prompted her to marry him. Two men are infatuated with her besides her husband, perhaps even love her: Brack and Lovborg. She has no amorous feelings for them, but she clearly, and this is significant, enjoys their adoration. Her relationship with Brack is perfect. She and the bachelor Brack agree that they will live their lives as a triangle, the third being her husband. She speaks openly with Brack, but not with her husband. She hears that Mrs. Elvsted loves Lovborg, and while it is clear to Hedda that Lovborg prefers her, the disclosure that Lovborg led Elvsted to think he loved her, this desertion, this infidelity, although small, not boredom, sets Hedda off. She destroys the relationship between Elvsted and Lovborg, gets hold of Lovborg’s manuscript, destroys it, and ruins his life, and she gives him a gun to kill himself. True, Hedda says in the play that she is bored and admits that this boredom is causing her to interfere in people’s lives, but is this true? Does she really know her motive? Is it her only motive? Is this somewhat simple idea all that the great playwright wants to convey? If so, why does he write so much about the two men who adore her? Hedda Gabler is the heroine’s maiden name, not her current married name, and by naming the play in this way, Ibsen seems to suggest that readers need to seek the solution to her character in her pre-marriage state, not in her boredom with her recent marriage. It is possible, and this is the obscurity in the play, that Hedda’s motivation is based on her need to be adored by men, completely. She must control her men and not be dominated by them in any way. Once she heard that Lovborg was loved by another and that he led this woman to believe that he reciprocated her love, to the extent that she left her husband, she felt betrayed and sought revenge. This possible explanation of Hedda’s motive, that she needs to totally control her relationships with men, helps explain why she shoots herself at the end of the play. Brack gains control over her when he learns that she gave Lovborg a gun, even though he said that he would keep her act secret. She says, “So I am in your power, Judge Brack. You have me at your beck and call, from this time forward…. I cannot endure the thought of that! Never!” And she loses her husband as well. He agrees to spend the rest of his life with Mrs. Elvsted, if necessary, to try to reconstruct Lovborg’s lost book. As a result, in her mind, she has lost all three men who adored her and there was no reason to continue living. This may be what Ibsen intended. However, there is no certainty that this is Hedda’s motivation. The play is a masterpiece and it is obscure. We can decipher it as we will.

New Edition of an Interesting Book By Eric Schultz This book was only released about a year ago, and now it is available in a more economically-priced edition. That makes it even better! This is certainly the kind of book that any classic film buff would like to have. It is an interesting view of America during WWII, and history buffs will find it intriguing. This is the color edition of the book, which has a great many color illustrations and photos. It is also available in black + white as well.It has been said that hard times can bring out the best and worst in people, and the same goes for wartime. This book is about some of the good which was done during World War II. In 1942, a large group of movie celebrities were organized for the largest road show of celebrities ever, ‘The Hollywood Victory Caravan’. The purpose was to raise funds for two organizations: the Navy Relief Society and the Army Emergency Relief, which were formed to give assistance to the families of military personnel who were either on-duty or killed in the war. The movie stars involved donated their time for this variety show, which performed in eleven cities over a three-week period, and raised more funds than ever before for these two relief agencies. I. Joseph Hyatt has extensively researched this historic all-star variety show, and has put it all together in this very interesting book. This ‘Ultimate Hollywood Victory Caravan Scrapbook’ takes us through the whole tour, as dozens of talented stars traveled together on a special train to perform in cities from Washington, D. C. to San Francisco. Mr. Hyatt has collected information and memorabilia from each of the show’s performances, and has presented it here in this book, with a running narration of interesting and amusing stories of things which happened along the way. Some film footage of performances has been discovered, and the book shows us frames from these films, along with a great many regular photographs and reproductions of official program books, newspaper clippings and advertisement posters. This book gives us a look at how these movie stars took time out of their normal careers to make an effort to help the families of those who had gone overseas to fight in the war. The many stars included James Cagney, Claudette Colbert, Charles Boyer, Bing Crosby, Joan Blondell, Groucho Marx, Olivia de Havilland, Cary Grant, Bob Hope and the greatest comedy team of all: Laurel & Hardy. Irv Hyatt has compiled and written a very interesting and entertaining history of this historic tour. Everyone who is interested in that time or the movies of that era, will enjoy this book.

By Erica Ann Stjohn Zentangle Mastery Series is the book I decided to start with to learn how to Zentangle. This book is a MUST have for anyone who wants to learn how to do this artform. After being diagnosed with cancer a few weeks ago, my world turned upside down. I felt symptoms of depression, anxiety, and all things that could be thought of. I could not sleep, could not stay awake when I needed to, I could not focus or have any peace.Looking through books on doodling, this book came up as a suggestion. I bought the book, bought my supplies and wanted to learn more! I had no idea where to start though. I loved all the drawings I had seen, but had no idea where to begin. This book is just what I needed. With examples, discussions, and suggestions, I felt so much more comfortable as I decided to try my first attempt. After reading this book, NOW I had an idea where to begin. I finally had something that helped me focus, helped me zone into to what I needed to start and to grow. With this book, I have finally helped myself a lot dealing with appointments, waiting in doctors offices, just something I needed to calm my mind.I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to learn how to draw a Zentangle. The guidance it gives you will take you on a journey of inner peace. I am not an artist, I am not an illustrator, I do not even claim to be able to draw, but it does not matter. I can make dots, I can connect the dots, I can draw lines, circles and squares. And this book has given me the know-how to understand a lot more of what I am doing. It helps me break patterns down into simple strokes anyone can do. And the peace it gives my mind is invaluable.I really look forward to more books from Olivia Summers. Her easy to read style of writing, showing examples, and more are what attract me to this book and her writing. If I could give more than 5 stars I sure would!

The step by step drawings were particularly helpful. The author is very gentle in her approach and I need that, as I'm just getting started, because I've never drawn anything before.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Not worth ten cents never mind four dollars. By BigT There is not an original idea anywhere in the book. The majority of the information given can be had for free on zentangle.com. That's where all the patterns came from as far as I can determine. Bottom line on this, the author has compiled a collection of someone else's work and called it her own, without even having the grace to pay her dues and become a CZT (certified zentangle teacher). Save up..invest your money in one of Sandy Steen Bartholemew's books or one by Marie Browning, Suzanne McNeill or Chris Letourneau. They at least are fun to read and will give you much more inspiration than this total rehash of basic Zentangle patterns. Needless to say I will not be purchasing the other two books in this series.

    • Milton Caniff’s masterpiece, Terry and the Pirates, perhaps the most influential action/adventure comic strip every created, returns! After Caniff left the strip in 1946 to create Steve Canyon, he was succeeded by George Wunder. Under Wunder’s stewardship the strip continued for almost another 27 years.
    • Volume 2 picks up with the story “Ancient Greed” and presents three complete continuties. The dailies and Sundays run in continuity and all of the Sundays are printed in spectacular color.

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. The best yet Hermes Press production. By Stephen Vincent Kempton While I dearly loved the first volume of Hermes Press Terry and The Pirates by George Wunder this volume out does it in several ways. For one thing in the first volume the publishers were unable to come up with a complete set of the daily strips in either their full size version or the truncated version which started because of the WW II paper shortage. So the first volume featured a mix of the two. Well this volume features only full size daily strips and no truncated strips. The volume is a massive 9 x 12 inches. Since the Sunday's and Daily strips featured a co-mingled story they are reproduced together. The Sundays are in full color and the dailies are in sharp black and white with two strips to a page. This is actually an improvement over what the Library Of American Comics usually does with most like Steve Canyon which runs three strips to a page. With the amount of detail George Wunder puts in each panel this is greatly appreciated. While you can still find an occasional glitch in the restoration such as off key coloring or broken line lettering this is the exception with very few flaws and 99% of it looks excellent especially considering the size of this small publisher and the fact that the material is 67 years old. While many fans collected comic books , very few saved their newspaper strips. The introduction by Eileen Herman is entertaining but way too short. Hopefully future volumes will expand the information. I also prefer it when the introductions give you some background on the stories included.During the first year following Milton Caniff's departure (reprinted in volume one ) George Wunder made a contentious effort to emulate the art style of Caniff, now here he cuts loose more and you see his own style emerge. While some have said Wunder ony draws ugly people, I disagree, his Terry Lee looks handsome and his woman look fetching if you can get past the very strange hair styles that he employs. While he does have a style similar to Caniff, and he was hired for that very reason, Wunder style just seems to have a sharp polish on it. While Caniff often could cleverly indicate things with a few unfinished brush strokes, Wunder illustrates it all the clear details. His backgrounds are fabulously detailed. Wunder's peers claimed he was one of the best inkers in the business. I can believe that. Also during the first year the editors at The Chicago Tribune Syndicate ran rough shot over Wunder insisting on certain storylines and characters be brought back. Now Wunder is freed to do his own thing.Milton Caniff used a large ever expanding cast of characters. Sometimes abandoning Terry Lee or Pat Ryan for months at a time.Wunder likes to have a have the same small cast in every adventure with others merely guest starring. His cast is Terry Lee grown from a young boy in Caniff's run to a handsome young adult and "Hotshot Charlie" Charles C. Charles, the red haired freckled pilot from Boston . Hotshot is his constant companion and comedy relief. The only other regular in these strips is Chopstick Joe the underworld rival of the Dragon Lady who often is seen setting up the missions and adventures for our pair of pilots. This volume like the one that preceded it breaks down nicely into three separate stories. Wunder didn't seem to have any set formula for the length of each story and they varied greatly . The first adventure here is over seven months long while the next two are both only about three months each.In the first adventure "Ancient Greed" Terry and Hotshot are hired to pilot an art dealer and his beautiful blonde daughter named Motley Van Goblin to a small town in indo-china.Of course Terry falls for Motley and they follow her on a dangerous jungle expedition. Among the Jungle they find a lost city and a strange man and yet another beautiful woman. Lots of mystery, intrigue and romance occur. Now for my complaint. Each volume has carried about 13 to 14 months of strips. George Wunder did the strip for 27 years. At the current size it is going to take 24 volumes to collect it all. It has been almost a year and a half between collections. At this rate many of us old timers will never live to see its completion. What can we do ? Well for starters purchase this book, pre-order the next as soon as it is solicited and encourage Hermes Press to pick up the pace. Nothing helps as much as good word of mouth and your hard earned cash. For those of you missed out on the first book and see that it is sold out and commanding ridiculous prices, be aware this volume is completely readable with out knowledge from either the first Wunder book or in fact Caniff's run. Again the success of this volume will encourage a reprint of the first one.My Highest Recommendation

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. OK By J. A. T. Overall I guess it's quite a good looking collection. Well, it has a good size, at least. Some Sundays look dark and murky, mostly in the beginning of the volume. Some dailies are clearly not press proof sourced. Reproduction quality of the line work varies.Overall, I'm not entirely sold on this one but maybe it's the best that can be done.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. I miss the old Milton Caniff By S. Martin Shelton The Hermes Press is leaking slowly reproductions of the famous comic strip titled “Terry and the Pirates.” The talented Milton Caniff created this innovate and artful adventure comic strip in 1934 and continued it until 1944. George Wunder continued the strip until 1973.In this volume are three rather mediocre stories of Terry and his cadre traipsing about China and Indochina unbraiding the “bad guys and gals.” His art, at times in masterful—characters are sharp and the backgrounds are detailed. However, frequently, he skips the background. His composition generally is satisfactory, but sometimes it’s pedestrian. Mimicking Caniff, his gorgeous and sensuous dames have wasp thin waists, high arched eyebrows, and brazen figures. Without fail, they lust after Terry with perfidious schemes. Oftentimes they’re close to success, but they never succeed. After all, this was a strip published in the newspapers for family reading. The book I have has serious binding problems—ten pages are missing, twelve are misplaced, and two are duplicated fifty pages deeper into the tome than their original position. Additionally, the printing (in China) of the black and white images are far too contrasty. And color images are slightly too contrasty.
