Ebook PDF Married to the Game: The real story of Lydia Harris, by Lydia Harris

In a nutshell, this is a very important and interesting title. Rare is the story and rare are the characters involved. Lydia Harris tells a remarkable story which is simultaneously sad and encouraging. Hearing her speak of her dealings in the music business I couldn't help but think of and ultimately compare her with another pioneering business woman. The personality and accomplishments of Mrs. Harris are remarkably similar to those of Effa Manley "The Queen of Negro League baseball." Like Mrs. Manley, Lydia Harris entered a male dominated field and successfully made her mark. Both overcame rumors and inuendo to leave a lasting legacy sprinkled with class and glamour. As for her husband Michael Ray Harris, much has been written but little if any of it focuses on the remarkable legitimate career Harris built both before his incarceration. Denzel Washington, Vanessa Williams, Attalah Shabazz and Yolonda King are just a few of the talented individuals who have performed in Harris sponsored plays. His contribution to the music industry dating back to Ice T., and Dana Dane up to the present day rap scene through artists like Snoop Dog is a testament to his resolve and business accumen. It should be pointed out that Harris inspite of constant news stories to the contrary is not a convicted drug peddler, but the sigma is effective in criminalizing the accomplishments of a true powerbroker in rap. It says alot about the state of black music when murder is tolerated but reformed drug peddlers are black listed. (No pun intended.) In short the Harris family has left a legitimate mark on the entertainment industry such straw figures like Suge Knight, Puffy Combs and Jay Z have only been able to accomplish through the extensive efforts of the public relations departments at Interscope and like minded companies. As the drama surrounding the collapse of Deathrow Records continues to unfold, it is more apparent with each financial revelation that Suge Knight and David Kenner never had the resolve to put together such an intricate and successful operation. Married to the Game touches on this fact without delving to deep into the story. Hopefully there will be a followup to this story with the complete story told. In the interim, purchase and enjoy this interesting title.

By Tasha Thorne Married To The Game was a great readers choice for anyone who loves a real true story told in factual events. It gives you something to look back on to evaluate the essence how one person's struggle to keep their voice alive benefited so many others who have come and gone before us. Lydia Harris' account of what really occured in Compton was the evolution of a real story untold in the early 90's area of music. Most women luck up on prince charming and in this case Lydia Met Michael "Harry O" Harris, who was a classic man, who ran and owned several business' at very young age in his career. Lydia had no idea that one day in her near future, her life would be full of court room hearings, lawyers luncheons, and consistent sharks who wanted to take advantage of Michael Harris' empire. Soon Lydia and Michael would build their own joining ventures together and become one force under Godfather Entertainment. It is a fact that a convicted felon cannot sit as an active CEO, therfore Lydia's role took full force in developing and planning the emerge of the label that would come to be called, Death Row Records. In some accounts upcoming artist at the time claim that Death Row came about from the guys chillin with "Suge" on what is considered "Tha Row" talking about what the name of the label should be. They came up with "Deaf Row" like "Def Jam" records which at the time was a popluar label in high demand with household name artist. In Lydia's, account she describes the title of the label as a common agreement between Lydia, Michael, Suge, and David. The reason it was called Death Row was because everyone on the label at the time had a criminal background and where fighting court cases. Michael and Lydia wanted to create a platform where young artist could be exposed to main stream media in the music industry and also be able to fight against the indifferences and injustices imposed on black communities during those times. What actually ended up happening with Death Row Records, was not the initial intention for Lydia, Mike, and Suge. As we know somewhere along the way, David Kenner lost interest in helping build and protect the Empire and instead turned his back on the once and a lifetime opportunity for Urban Music and its Future. Ironically, in the four years of Death Rows Chart Ripping records, Death Row reigned in the music indudtry while also introducing to new concepts to the Game of music and entertainment. One concept was the introduction of Label Logo jewlery specifally gold chained necklace and double cds in what was reffered to the hip hop music. Both ideas were first introduced by the infamous Death Row Records. So in my opinion Lydia Harris, not only fought for herself, she fought her daughter, Michael, Suge, Snoop, Dre. Dre, Tupac Shakur, Lady of Rage just to name a few... This is a leagacy worth honoring and paying homage too. In 2015, or in the near future. If Lydia were to do it all over again, return to the game that she "married" over 2 decades ago, who would be the next Artist to make a name for themselves with her knowledge and expertise in finding the next multi-platinum recording artist sale chart HIT. There is no telling where the music industry could turn for the future but we do know that it is a very high possibility that the music will touch many lives again! hip hop, gospel, jazz, country, alternative, pop, reggae, R&B. With the creation of new sound all across the world. We need a woman like Lydia Harris to show the world Who really knows how to execute with talented artist in the music industry having power and integrity and most of all your word. my food for thought! Now READ THE BOOK!! It's worth knowing what happened to urban hip hop music and so many powerful influences we acknowledge with high noteriety today in music. With Lydia Harris dedication and commitment Death Row Records Did IT Overnight!!!

I do understand it relatively well, but I still had the feeling that I could get to the next level by tweaking my skills. I didn’t know where to start, so I bought this book so that I could find out what I could improve. The book is very good at explaining the basics (for people who don’t know what poker is about) and it is also good in giving strategy tips. Some of the best tips were: protect yourself, know the odds and identify your opponent weaknesses. Also, a concept that I didn’t think about before was: take a walk in the shoes of your opponent. That helped me identify common plays of my opponent.I was able to win a local amateur championship and even win 500 dollars! Thank you very much. If you are into poker, get this book!

Within the pages of this book are a lot of skill and advice that one can work with and become a professional if he is able to apply them efficiently. With the poker basics that newbies learn from this book, they can become great players in just a short while. If the reader is already an experienced player, he will learn even better and up his skills in the game, after he has changed his manner of approach, learned how to manage his money in the game and even learned how to read his opponent's psychology.I appreciate the fact that the author included some parts of the "one day blackjack mastery" at the end of this book. That is one book that I will probably be looking at very soon.

When I was at my friend's place and they were all playing Poker, I didn't know how to play, and they had to teach me. Of course, because I didn't know all the good tactics mentioned in this book, I always lost, which made me a potential victim of Poker, so people could win and 'take' all my money! This book taught me how to win, and which approaches to use in order to win. Since that, I am more confident in playing Poker, and I am no longer a loser, but. Winner!

Game of Shadows meets Among the Thugs in this revelatory true-to-life crime thriller and expose involving greed, corruption, an Asian crime syndicate, and the fixing of international soccer matches at the highest levels of the game, including the UEFA Champions League and the World Cup.

In February 2013, the director of Europol, the European Union's law enforcement agency, made the shocking announcement that 700 international soccer matches had been fixed since 2008, including World Cup qualifying and exhibition matches, with a Chinese criminal syndicate pulling the strings. For the first time, investigative journalist Brett Forrest takes us inside the underworld of one of organized crime's most profitable businesses—a $1 trillion annual international betting market, of which soccer comprises 70 percent.

Forrest uncovered a web of nefarious dealings across the world, even on U.S. soil. As he found, no match is safe—not even the World Cup tournament—and law enforcement officials lack the resources to stop it. But one man has taken this criminal enterprise on: Chris Eaton, former head of security for FIFA. Now with the International Center for Sports Security in Qatar, this rough and tumble Australian and longtime Interpol cop has tracked down some of the biggest fixers and their financial backers and continues his mission to clean up the world's most popular sport.

Filled with headline making revelations, The Big Fix is must reading for soccer fans and true crime aficionados.

Amazon.com Review Brett Forrest Explains the Origin of The Big Fix

"It all started in a bull session with Donnie Kwak, my editor at ESPN The Magazine. Donnie had been bird-dogging some soccer games that didn’t add up. He and I knew very little about match-fixing. But it didn’t take an expert to understand that when one national team beats another by a dozen goals, there’s probably more to the story. Was there ever. Once I began investigating the phenomenon of modern match-fixing—the manipulation of soccer games for the purpose of illegal betting—I didn’t get far before I realized that I was sitting on a grave and fundamentally important story that held implications far beyond sports. My two-year journey had begun. There’s nothing new about fixing. People have manipulated sporting matches since the beginning of organized athletics. Early on, motivation hewed to the political and the personal (let my team win in front of our hometown fans, and I’ll return the favor), and in some places and instances, it still does today. Gambling has also played a central role over the centuries, with the 1919 World Series a particular case in point. However, I learned quickly in my reporting that what’s happening now in soccer is unprecedented. And it might be unstoppable. I was lucky to encounter Chris Eaton early in my research. Eaton was the head of security at FIFA at the time. To me, he was instantly likeable, precisely in the ways that a bureaucrat would find him infuriating. Nearly everyone who had a stake in the game—FIFA execs, national soccer federation officials, players and coaches, sponsors—couched the scourge of match-fixing in apologetic terms. Or they avoided discussion of it entirely. Not Eaton. Whereas soccer administrators threw up their hands in resigned, falsely worldly understanding, Eaton approached match-fixing like the cop that he had always been. He wanted to map the crime, understand it, wipe it out. He appeared to grasp a fundamental truth that escaped others, that match-fixing threatened the game of soccer itself. After all, why do we watch the games? Because we don’t know how they’ll turn out. If we begin to believe, based on available evidence, that the sport is rigged, it stands to reason that our interest will fade. And what of the game then? Eaton was only half of the cops-and-robbers story, as it began to envelop me. The other half was Wilson Perumal, a shadowy figure squirreled away in Budapest, a guest of the local constabulary. Perumal, a Singaporean, was the most infamous match-fixer in the world. Understanding his story allowed me to peer into the sophisticated, underground world of the fixer and his backers in global organized crime. Perumal’s rise and fall and subsequent rise mirrored the evolution of the international gambling market, how the proliferation of the Internet and the growth of the Chinese economy very nearly reinvented gambling as we know it. Getting to Perumal himself provided its own adventure. When I explain modern match-fixing to people who are unfamiliar with it, I’m met with a uniform reaction: stunned silence, followed by a round of feverish questions. This is a shocking crime, particularly because it’s playing out right in front of us. How did it happen? Why does it continue? The Big Fix tells that story."

From the Back Cover

Can the most beloved sport in the world beat the corruption that threatens to tear it apart?

Known as the "beautiful game," soccer is the world's most popular sport, crossing borders and language barriers to entertain billions. But underneath it all is a scandal that threatens to make soccer the ugliest sport in the world. An underworld of international gambling rings, corrupt players and officials, and shadowy figures preys on the far-flung edges of the game, making match-fixing in soccer one of organized crime's most profitable businesses. In The Big Fix, journalist Brett Forrest pulls back the curtain, exposing a web of nefarious dealings across the world, even on U.S. soil.

One man has taken on this criminal enterprise: Chris Eaton, a hardheaded Australian, longtime Interpol director, and the former head of security for FIFA. Forrest follows Eaton's journey from local beat cop to FIFA's security chief for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, where Eaton first grasped the extent of match-fixing and the threat it posed to the game. Eaton made it his mission to track down the elusive perpetrators: fixers who crisscross borders, targeting players and clubs on behalf of international criminal syndicates.

The Big Fix takes us inside Chris Eaton's hunt for the world's boldest fixers and their backers—and the fight to save the beautiful game.

The Big Fix is one of those books; a work of non-fiction but as enthralling and shocking as a thriller. It's got all the elements of a great tale, and it shows us a world of corruption right in front of our eyes. Massive money, massive crime, a hell of a good read.If you don't care about soccer, you'll enjoy reading about the thrill of the chase after massive crime syndicates. If you do care about soccer, you'll might not watch the World Cup with the same eyes or look at the game the say way again. Either way, you'll enjoy it.

Complicated subject is a page turner By A Frost I'm impressed how the author Brett Forrest was able to deliver a page-turning tale about an extremely complicated set of international characters and circumstances. It had me from the first page and left me wondering what will ever become of the worlds most popular sport if the good guys don't take it back. And soon.

The author, Brett Forrest, has done an excellent job pulling together the numerous threads of corruption that have intersected the world of professional soccer over the past decade, and provides an insider's perspective on how FIFA and its allies have attempted to combat those threats over the years.Forrest's style is breezy and conversational, and he moves around from location to location with a clear point of view. He also does an excellent job explaining the sometimes complicated mechanics of sports betting and how they apply to the scandals he discusses. However, the book suffers from some structural flaws, as well as an overly hagiographic writing style. The Big Fix is more a series of vignettes than a coherent end-to-end narrative, and it moves from character to character at a sometimes dizzying, and occasionally structurally incoherent, pace. As a result, it can be difficult to identify more than sketches of the protagonists, and the book seems uncertain whether it is intended as an overview or an in-depth bit of reporting.Additionally, Forrest writes somewhat breathlessly about the heroes of the book. Chris Eaton, the police officer, is described in melodramatic terms, and his character flaws are glossed over or described, in classic interview style, as weaknesses that are secretly strengths. More problematically, Forrest largely lets FIFA off the hook as a responsible actor, instead painting it as a helpless bystander to and active combatant of corruption in its ranks. Although Forrest mentions the allegations of implicit corruption underlying the Qatari World Cup bid or even the executive committee, he rarely turns an analytically critical eye towards the complex relationship that FIFA has with fraud - or probes more deeply into how an international federation without law enforcement powers might better manage it.

Accompanying an exhibition at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, this catalogue explores one of the most important but historically neglected painters of the Italian Renaissance, Carlo Crivelli (c. 1435–c. 1495). Venetian by birth but shaped by formative experiences in Padua, Crivelli embarked on a career that spanned both sides of the Adriatic. His extraordinary success led to a virtual monopoly in the Marches, where he dominated the market for towering altarpieces and jewel-like paintings for private devotion in the second half of the fifteenth century. Pushing the boundaries between painting and sculpture, his works are distinguished by their radically expressive compositions, luxuriant ornamental display and bravura illusionism.Seven essays challenge the prevailing view of Crivelli as a provincial artist working in an anachronistic ‘Gothic’ style, investigate the remarkable facture of his paintings, and shed new light on his rediscovery by collectors. Repositioning Crivelli’s contributions within wider developments in the history of western art, Stephen J. Campbell (Johns Hopkins University), C. Jean Campbell (Emory University), Thomas Golsenne (École Nationale Supérieure d’Art de Nice), and Alison Wright (University College London) reveal his artistic ambition. Crivelli is reevaluated as an experimental artist who masterfully manipulated the surfaces of his paintings into visionary encounters with the divine, forged a modern icon, and offered a powerful alternative to new models of painting associated with Florence. Gianfranco Pocobene (Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum) examines the technical facility that underpins Crivelli’s dazzling pictorial effects and publishes the results of the first ever technical analysis on the Gardner’s Saint George and the Dragon. Essays by Francesco De Carolis (Università di Bologna) and Oliver Tostmann (Wadsworth Athenaeum) investigate the painter’s critical fortunes. The former explores the dispersal of Crivelli’s works in nineteenth-century Italy and their role in shaping his modern reputation, while the latter examines the American taste for Crivelli in the early twentieth century. The catalogue reflects the iconographic range of his images. Entries written by a team of scholars in Europe and the United States include new insights and up-to-date bibliography for twenty-three paintings and Crivelli’s only surviving drawing on paper.

It's ideal for such a purpose, both full of information about the artist's production and presenting individual write-ups on the works in the exhibit. But anyone interested in Early Renaissance art, and Crivelli in particular, should find this book rewarding. It discusses, among other things, why art historians have written Crevelli out of the history of Renaissance art; what caused his sudden brief popularity at the turn of the nineteenth century, particularly in America; what techniques and materials Crivelli used to achieve his gorgeous effects; the symbolism of his often idiosyncratic iconography; how local church and civil politics influenced his work; how and why the textile aesthetic influenced Crivelli; and how Crivelli created his illusions, both realistic and otherworldly. The essays by art experts are rich in original insights, but you do have to work for them a bit because most of the authors are fond of academic jargon. My favorite author among them, though, did manage to be lively as well as scholarly. His witty essay explores the significance of Crivelli's grotesque cucumbers! The color illustrations are good quality. The details in particular, highlight the beauty of Crivelli's sumptuous surfaces.Little is known of Crivelli's life, but I was fascinated to learn that he was imprisoned in Venice and exiled for abducting a sailor's wife. Later in his career he was knighted, so it seems he suffered ups and downs in his personal fortunes, as well as vicissitudes over the centuries in his artistic reputation.I've always liked Crivelli. But after reading this book I have a new appreciation for him.

Carlo Crivelli at the Gardner Museum By Kenneth Hughes There could hardly be a more appropriate place to mount the first monographic exhibition of Carlo Crivelli (c.1435-1495) in this country than the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, because its “St. George Slaying the Dragon” (1470), acquired by Mrs. Gardner in 1897, was the first Crivelli painting to enter an American collection. She purchased it at the urgent prompting of Bernard Berenson, who wrote to her that it was a painting “which at the bottom of my heart I prefer to every Titian, every Holbein, every Giorgione” (11; the cover image is a detail). Although Berenson later tempered his early enthusiasm for the painter, his admiration did not substantially wane; for certain methodological reasons, he does not include him in his classic “The Italian Painters of the Renaissance” of 1952, but he does pay him due tribute as one who “takes rank with the most genuine artists of all times and countries” (11). Those methodological reasons for marginalizing the artist are very clearly discussed by the exhibition’s co-curator and catalogue editor, Stephen J. Campbell, Wiesenfeld Professor of Art History at Johns Hopkins University. In his introductory essay “On the Importance of Crivelli,” he says it is a question of the direction art historiography took around the turn of the last century and its program to equate Italian Renaissance art primarily with the art of Florence, Venice, and Urbino, or at least to valorize artistic production in those centers at the expense of local currents and traditions in more peripheral areas of the peninsula. To a scholar like Berenson, Prof. Campbell points out, geography was destiny, and the fact that Crivelli, although born in Venice, worked primarily in the Marches, necessarily consigned him to the cultural outskirts and seriously compromised his historical standing. But, to put it plainly, that was no failure of Crivelli’s; it was rather the failure of scholarship to develop historical criteria appropriate to understanding him and other painters in similar situations (abetted by Giorgio Vasari’s omission of him and many others from his “Lives of the Painters”). Berenson was finally forced to acknowledge that “a formula that would, without distorting our entire view of Italian art in the fifteenth century, do full justice to such a painter as Carlo Crivelli, does not exist” (11)—which meant that, rather than adjusting the formula to include Crivelli, it was easier simply to toss him out of the whole equation. And so the artist has remained generally outside the Renaissance canon and not well known to the public, and, apart from a couple of occasions in Italy, he has never before had an exhibition of his own.“St. George” is joined here by twenty-two paintings and Crivelli’s only extant autograph drawing, loans from museums in the US and Europe that demonstrate clearly that the Italian Renaissance was stylistically more diverse and geographically more widespread than either contemporary or modern accounts generally indicate, and that certain notions of Gothic and Renaissance dear to art history still need seriously to be challenged. (This is the second such collaboration between the Gardner and Prof. Campbell; in 2002 he curated the museum's first ever monographic exhibition of Crivelli’s contemporary from Ferrara, Cosmè Tura, a painter whose visionary and fantastic imagery accorded just as little with the quattrocento Florentine paradigms as Crivelli’s.) The exhibition items are beautifully reproduced in the catalogue, with the panels from the reconstructed early polyptychs illustrated separately. (Only one of those polyptychs has survived intact in its original frame, the others having been disassembled into individual panels and predella scenes and widely dispersed in the nineteenth century to capitalize on a short-lived craze for the artist’s work.) These are extremely unusual and interesting paintings: beautifully colored, razor-sharp in drawing--“as if by lightning,” as Berenson put it--but one sees immediately what he meant by Crivelli’s formula-busting eccentricity: wrenched, idiosyncratic and amusing plays on perspective, disorienting and hilarious trompe-l’oeil effects, obsessive attention to detail and a van-Eyckian insistence on microscopic accuracy, etc.—these are features broadly characteristic of his painting and perfectly exemplified by his best-known picture, "The Annunciation with St. Emidius" (1486; National Gallery, London), an amazing interplay of surface ornamentation and perspectival illusion. Many of these features would seem to locate him historically a few decades earlier, and in general one senses a more tenacious remainder of the "International Gothic" in him than in most of his contemporaries: the exclusive use of tempera on panel (some transferred to canvas), the brocaded gold background, the devotion solely to religious painting, the preference for the polyptych over the “pala” or single-field altarpiece, etc. These are no doubt the effects of the conservative patronage of the monastic orders who were his primary employers. He was not a “progressive” painter, but—and this is a major scholarly point of the exhibition and catalogue—just because he was not helping to blaze the trail to Cézanne does not mean that he was stuck in a blind alley in some benighted backwater. One simply has to understand that his priority in painting was not representation or imitation, but, as the title precisely puts it, ornament and illusion--sometimes going even so far as to pull painting in the direction of sculpture. For example, one of his favorite techniques was “pastiglia,” the process of building up layers of gesso on the panel and carving them to create shapes projecting from the surface—or even casting gesso in prepared forms and gluing the pieces onto the panel—and then painting or gilding them to produce the effect of a very low relief somewhat akin to, although far more precise than, a heavy impasto in oil. (In the cover image, the hilt of St. George’s sword, his armor, and the studs along his horse’s bridle are done that way, but unfortunately the catalogue does not show any such passages in raking light to give the viewer a better sense of the depth of the relief, a disappointing omission given how important the technique was to his facture and how often it is mentioned in the texts.) This is just one instance of the tremendous richness of surface treatment in these paintings, which Prof. Campbell calls “unparalleled in contemporary Italian painting” (155).Apart from his excellent introduction, there are several other scholarly contributions by Renaissance specialists. They discuss such topics as his unusually extensive use of gold and highly ornamented textiles; the signature cucumber that persistently pops up as part of a fruit garland or a trompe-l’oeil device; the nineteenth-century recovery of the “Crivellischi” as Italian “Primitives”; his reception in the US; etc. Although a couple of the essays are not as free of scholarly jargon as one might wish, they are mostly interesting and informative. Each catalogue entry is provided with full curatorial data including provenance and dedicated literature and is accompanied by several signed pages of annotated discussion. Apart from these entries, most of which are reproduced full-page, there are also ninety-six very well chosen supportive illustrations in color, some of which are also full-page, and several pages of full-bled enlargements. There is no index, but a very good selected bibliography. The exhibition is a unique—no doubt once-in-a-lifetime—opportunity to experience these paintings together in one venue. It is on view from October 2015 until January 2016, but those who can’t see the show in person can be assured that the catalogue is a faithful reproduction. In addition, it registers several corrections to the information contained in the most recent major study, Ronald Lightbown’s big 2004 monograph, and I warmly recommend it to anyone wishing to take an instructive and entertaining side excursion off the beaten path of Italian Renaissance art.

Late in his life, the intrepid traveler and translator Richard Francis Burton, distilled his understanding of story as it applied to live performance into this book, How to See a Play. The title implies that most people watch plays, but don't really perceive the structure of the storytelling, and that they would benefit from his experience with how, and why, the theatrical experience has been so powerful. Here is his preface: This book is aimed squarely at the theater-goer. It hopes to offer a concise general treatment upon the use of the theater, so that the person in the seat may get the most for his money; may choose his entertainment wisely, avoid that which is not worth while, and appreciate the values artistic and intellectual of what he is seeing and hearing. This purpose should be borne in mind, in reading he book, for while I trust the critic and the playwright may find the discussion not without interest and sane in principle, the desire is primarily to put into the hands of the many who attend the playhouse a manual that will prove helpful and, so far as it goes, be an influence oward creating in this country that body of alert theater auditors without which good drama will not flourish. The obligation of the theater-goer to insist on sound plays is one too long overlooked; and just in so far as he does insist in ever-growing numbers upon drama that has technical skill, literary quality and interpretive insight into life, will that better theater come which must be the hope of all who realize the great social and educative powers of the playhouse. The words of that veteran actor-manager and playwright of the past, Colley Cibber, are apposite here: “It is not to the actor therefore, but to the vitiated and low taste of the spectator, that the corruptions of the stage (of what kind soever) have been owing. If the public, by whom they must live, had spirit enough to discountenance and declare against all the trash and fopperies they have been so frequently fond of, both the actors and the authors, to the best of their power, must naturally have served their daily table with sound and wholesome diet.” And again he remarks: “For as their hearers are, so will actors be; worse or better, as the false or true taste applauds or discommends them. Hence only can our theaters improve, or must degenerate.” Not for a moment is it implied that this book, or any book of the kind, can make playwrights. Playwrights as well as actors are born, not made—at least, in the sense that seeing life dramatically and having a feeling for situation and climax is a gift and nothing else. The wise Cibber may be heard also upon this. “To excel in either art,” he declares, “is a self-born happiness, which something more than good sense must be mother of.” But this may be granted, while it is maintained stoutly that there remains to the dramatist a technique to be acquired, and that practice therein and reflection upon it makes perfect. The would-be playwright can learn his trade, even as another, and must, to succeed. And the spectator (our main point of attack, as was said), the necessary coadjutor with player and playwright in theater success, can also become an adept in his part of this cooperative result. This book is written to assist him in such cooperation.

I have worked as an Exotic Dancer for two years, and in that time I have learned a lot. Working at a small place where I dance on stage for fifteen minutes every hour and then work the bar and do lap dances for the other forty-five minutes I make anywhere from two hundred to a thousand dollars a night, and I feel I have valuable advise and entertaining information that can both: help other dancers and fascinate readers who do not know much about the exotic dancing Industry. By no means do I consider myself an expert or assume that what I do is right for everyone, but I've found in conversing with people inside and outside of the industry that what goes on in exotic dance clubs is not common knowledge and thus worthy of being written about.

She's every bit as interesting in person as her book would indicate. English professor, yoga teacher, and dancer who actually goes by her real name and can carry on a conversation. Her book is a how-to for dancers and provides good commonsense advice: "be nice" "stay sober" "learn some actual dance moves" and so on. Brey has girl-next-door looks, but drew my attention with her chin stand and extraordinary pole work on stage. She practices what she preaches. She danced her way from New Jersey to Las Vegas, making $200 a day on average. I told her she should write a book about it and of course she is. She then mentioned "The Go Go Professor." I'm glad she did. Now that the instructional manual is written, she can focus on the juicy details with book #2 (stay tuned).

She has the courage to do both because that's what her heart tells her. The book shows a unique and interesting life.

* * * Can be read as a standalone book. * * * What if your fated mate was just an app swipe away? Curvy Dina Taylor hates the idea of online dating. It's something kids do, not 36-year old women, whose boyfriends have left them for the office intern. But her best friend Lauren has a secret she's bursting to share: there are men out there who absolutely love voluptuous girls like her. All Dina has to do is tap Shiftr, the cute little paw-print app that Lauren has just installed on her phone. In the time it takes Dina to get over her shock that there are guys who can shift into animals, she's hit up by Logan - a dark-eyed bear-guy with a torso like sculpted marble and eyes like pools of lust. He tells her that he feels a magnetic connection to her, but before she can tell him that the feeling's mutual, her clumsy thumb swipes the wrong way, and he's gone. Dina is distraught, but Tamika, the creator of Shiftr has a cunning plan that may just bring them together again. Will Dina find the sexy Logan in the midst of the eccentric matchmaker's beautiful, opulent summer garden party? And will they discover that they're fated to be together? This is a standalone, short, sweet, steamy read, perfect for a lunch break, bath time, or a little dose of me-time, wherever you are. HEA and no cliffhanger! Note: This book and all other books in the Hope Valley Dating App series are standalone and can be read completely independently. Want more romance from Ariana Hawkes? By jlswainsboro/Judy Lewis Title: Shiftr: Swipe Left For Love (Dina)Series: Hope Valley BBW Online Dating App Romance SeriesDesignation: Book One: Dina, Standalone Novella, No CliffhangerAuthor: Ariana HawkesMy Rating: FIVE DELICIOUSLY CUTE STARS *****I love it! Shiftr: Swipe Left for Love (Book One: Dina) is the first release in Ariana Hawkes' amazing new series, Hope Valley BBW Online Dating App Romances and it totally rocks! It is absolutely the cutest book ever and quite apropos considering the popularity of today's online dating scene. Online dating sites have quickly become the Mecca for the forlorn, love-lost souls seeking love or in this case a BFF seeking a mate for her bestie! Beautiful, curvaceous Dina has decided to give up on having a love life. She would concentrate on her career as an elementary school teacher and her afterschool project where she is a volunteer tutor to vulnerable kids who need a little extra support. It's gratifying and she loves it. She has never even tried having a real relationship after having her heart broken by her highschool sweetheart when he rejected her for a much younger woman. She had only had sex with him and it was certainly nothing to brag about. Hmmph! She doesn't need a man. She's independent and self sufficient! She'd just stick with her trusty vibrator and call it a day. Yep, that's her life-plan. But her best friend Lauren has a much better idea. She had recently met bear-shifter Connor, the love of her life, on a secret dating site using their Siftr App and now she's finally allowed to tell one person about it so they could sign up as well. And guess what? She wants Dina to sign up and post her profile immediately. There's just one little problem - Dina doesn't know about shifters - until now! Dina is very, very reluctant but her bestie Lauren is there to guide the way. Once Dina sees the pictures of all the hunky, muscled guys she has to choose from, she's definitely boarding the Shiftr train! All aboard! But while Lauren pops out for more wine, Dina has a mishap and swipes the wrong way and deletes the profile of the one guy she really wants to contact. Oh no! She only knows his first name is Logan and nothing else but there's just something about him. She can feel it - he's the one! What's a girl to do? I guess you'll have to read the book to find out but I will say this....Big, beautiful woman who secretly longs for a family of her own and a real forever love-check! Handsome, modest, kind and caring bear shifter who is looking for his true mate-check! A dating app mishap and the best friend a girl could ever have-check! Heated attraction, fiery passion, heartwarming romance, a little heartbreaking angst and some steamy dreamy sex-you bet! That and a whole lot more! Buckle up my lovelies and climb aboard the Shiftr train! You'll love it! It's so much fun! The story is cute, sweet, humorous, fast-paced, light-hearted, fun, romantic, arousing and sexy as sin. Va..Va..Voom! The dialogue is smart, flows effortlessly and is exceptionally well written and well edited. The characters are funny, captivating, relatable and engaging. Hawkes skillfully combines these elements into a wonderfully entertaining paranormal romance. It is a stand alone short story with NO cliffhanger and a wonderfully sweet happily-ever-after ending. My final verdict: Five Delectable Stars! Deliciously cute, seriously sexy and delightfully entertaining! I loved it. I can hardly wait to see who finds love next!

This is the first book in this new amazingly romantic Shifter series written by this talented author. I loved the idea of this story and the fact that it is so sweet, so loving, so romantic and features a beautiful BBW named Dina who deserves nothing but happiness and love but sadly thinks that she will never find it. But thanks to her absolute bestie Lauren she learns that not all of her dreams and hopes are hopeless. There are men out there who happen to love and appreciate bright and bubbly, sweet, sassy women and cannot wait to get their hands on the curves that make each of these beautiful girls yearned for and adored by these gorgeous men more than they ever thought possible. The only thing they were unaware of that these wonderful amazing gorgeous men also happen to be half animal. The fact that these men change into animal shifters at will is a lot to take in especially when it is never heard of. But once these amazing men find that bond, and find the one destined to be theirs forever they show her exactly how much they appreciate her curves, beauty and are willing to adore her like no other ever before.Which is exactly what the beautiful, soulful big bear Logan wants to do, he wants to love and cherish Dina just as she deserves. The chemistry between these two is a beautiful spark that lights into a flame and sets the pages alight. How can you not love this series just from reading that! I was so involved in this happy tale I did not want it to end! This sexy tale although short is a delight to read and a beautiful escape into the fantasy of the curvy beauty finding her own prince charming. I cannot wait for more of these stories and hope that this is the start of a longer series as these reads are so feel good and enjoyable I just cannot express how much I genuinely enjoyed this read. It was wonderful and I really hope that you do too! Happy Reading!

By sherill Shiftr-Swipe Left for Love-(a dating app for Shifters to find their mate) is the birth of a heart throbbing standalone series which promises you more than an entertaining read. Ariana's talent truly shines as she lures you into the UNFORGETABLE story of Dina. The story takes place in Hope Valley where the existence of shifters is a carefully protected secret. The characters as vividly described by the author are fun-loving and engaging: Dina, 5'10”, independent, sassy, curvy, beauty; Lauren, Dina's best friend and Connor's mate; Tamika, creator of the Shiftr dating app; Logan, 6'5”, charismatic, heart melting gorgeous, sexy, bear shifter.Dina hasn't dated in about a year and her best friend Lauren decides it's about time she stopped playing possum and start dating. Lauren shows Dina pictures of the men on the Shiftr app. Dina is absolutely awe-struck at what she sees; they are shirtless, built like Captain America, and drop dead gorgeous; she also believes she is unworthy to date any of them. Lauren explains to Dina that she needed to get approval from Tamika to put Dina's profile on Shiftr-because the men are shapeshifters and she has to keep the app a secret. Naturally, Dina thought Lauren was daft until she saw Connor as a bear. Lauren also explains to Dina that shifters adore curvy beautiful women. Dina is fascinated with Logan's picture and decides this is who she wants to connect with; Logan reads Dina's profile and wants to connect with her-Dina was so excited she swiped right instead of left. Right deleted him permanently. She is devastated-The search for Logan begins. The story was fantastic from start to finish, it was filled with humor, characters you can connect with, genuine friendship, and hot-blooded romance. Yes this story has a HEA but it's the in between that makes it thrilling, and there is a much welcome reveal at the end. I have no reservations in recommending this book as it was more than a fabulous read. {I received an arc for an honest review}.

When his father dies unexpectedly back in Uganda, a popular foreign student’s plans to prove his own independence and brilliance are completely shattered. Being an only son, Simon ‘Sim’ must now take the mantle atop a family haunted by a decades old secret and a legacy tainted by his father's decisions. Sim's course of action will leave devastating consequences for his friends and loved ones, including an older woman he has fallen madly in love with, as he stops at nothing to prove to his unsympathetic ancestors that he is a far better man than his father ever was. In his debut novel, Wambalye Weikama draws from his own experience to bring to life a sensational story of obsessive ambition matched against unyielding cultural expectations.

Sad but rings true By Sharon Falkenheimer This story of an international student from Africa attending college in Seattle is quite different from what one would expect. International students, including this young man, are often talented young people from prominent families who are destined for influential jobs in their homelands. African Son begins this way with the dreams of a young man, but ends with the sad, devastating and permanent consequences of his poor choices on both him and the woman he loves. He does fulfill his role as the "man of the family" responsible for his relatives and family property, but at great cost. Had his poor choices begun out of a need to fulfill that calling, he might receive greater sympathy than in this case in which he chooses them as an easy way to fund his education and gets in deeper to meet a family need. The story is written as if autobiographical but may be fiction. In either case, it stands as yet another warning of not taking risky shortcuts to achieve one's goals in life.
