Amazon has delivered a home run with the Echo, a voice-command device that plays music, answers your questions, and adds things to your grocery list just by listening to you. It's an always-on personal assistant and the first such device that's simple enough for the average consumer to begin using right away, without any technical knowledge. Hi, I'm Steve Weber, publisher of Kindle Buffet, a daily list of free and discounted Kindle books. You can get a free subscription at KindleBuffet.com.  After you buy this book, head over to the Buffet and chow down!Although it's a relatively small cylindrical device about the same size as two stacked soup cans, Echo delivers impressive sounds--lifelike speech and full-bodied music. Echo is fun, useful, and a great value. Just think what it would have cost you two or three decades ago to assemble a decent home stereo--plus hundreds of dollars more for a record or tape collection! Forget that, the Echo delivers impressive sound from a collection of a million songs (through Amazon Prime) and streaming via your home Wi-Fi connection to music sites such as iTunes, Spotify and Pandora. Its pricetag is a bargain for the music function alone and new features are being added every day. And as the first generation of voice-commanded devices from Amazon, who knows what it will be able to do in a year or two's time. Echo is the second big innovation delivered by Amazon's laboratory in Silicon Valley, following the Kindle eBook reader. The gadget runs wirelessly on the "Cloud," also known as Amazon Web Services. And that's how it's seamlessly updated with new features, as soon as they are developed by Amazon or its army of third-party software partners. You may wonder if Amazon's Echo is just Apple's Siri in a can or Google's Now and Microsoft's Cortana, which all work with certain smartphones. Echo's Alexa may just well be another voice in the dark, but she's a sure sign that the tech giants are gearing up for computers that talk back, perform menial tasks, interface with other electronic devices, and make our lives easier and more fun. Hopefully this book will answer all of the questions you have about the Echo. And if there's more you need to know, you can speak with an Echo product specialist at Amazon by visiting the link echo.amazon.com/#help/call . Type in your phone number at the site, and an Amazon rep will promptly call you back. Or just ask Alexa your question.

An intimate and searching visual portrait of the star-crossed Hollywood icon, James Dean

With three major films―East of Eden, Rebel Without a Cause, and Giant―all released within a year of each other and within months of his tragic death, James Dean captured the world’s imagination and has never let it go. Magnum photographer Dennis Stock met James Dean at the Château Marmont in Hollywood in 1954, and they became fast friends. Stock captured Dean’s essence in a stunning series of images of the actor in the midst of family and friends, as well as alone, sleeping, lost in thought, in the frozen fields of Indiana, and on a rainy day in Manhattan. It was an extraordinary collaboration between two people in full command of their respective talents. In the words of the Life magazine article that accompanied the first publication of these photographs, James Dean was “the most exciting actor to hit Hollywood since Marlon Brando,” but at the time the photographs were taken, he was still poised on the brink of fame. Dennis Stock:James Dean reintroduces these iconic photographs, taken at the dawn and high noon of a brief and brilliant career, with Dennis Stock’s original accompanying text and a later introduction by Joe Hyams. 125 black-and-white photographs

By Father Ted I had enjoyed 'Green Shoes.." very much and when the opportunity to read this second collection of essays came up I didn't hesitate. Amie Ryan has a keen eye for the little details that lift an 'ordinary' story and make it special. Hmm; what else can I say? You'll have to read that story to discover the meaning of that reference! Let's just say I learned a lot of things about the female psyche that had been hitherto hidden from a mere male. There are so many things to choose from which resonated with my own experience; I'm confident that you will share in those 'that happened to me!' moments. In the tale about the ex-band member, I recalled a famous 60s band sending a copy of every single and album to a member who left just before they hit the jackpot, because he didn't think they'd ever get that big break.I remember my mother making jam when I was a small boy; Amie can't see the point when there excellent options in the stores. Sorry Amie, I must take issue on that one. Why did she bother? I can still remember that smell 60 years on; you don't get that in any supermarket aisle! There are a great variety of essays on offer here and it's no exaggeration to say 'there's something for everyone'. A little gem.

The one thing I kept thinking at I read through was that the book would make a great Book Group selection for groups of friends. I have so many pages dog-earred in spots I want to share with friends that my copy is ruined!Another thing about the book is that it makes an awesome gift for a friend. I am thinking of getting copies for all my neices and some of my girlfriends next time an occasion rolls around.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A wonderful collection of essays, nostalgic and thought provoking By Robin Sparks With 'Starfish on Thursday' Ryan has woven together a lovely collection of nostalgically themed essays, interspersed with the occasional satirical letter which had me trying not to laugh too loudly - for fear of waking up the household. Sometimes poignant, sometimes simply endearing - the stories are a must read for anyone who enjoys a dreamy trip down memory lane or even just a good ol' 'yarn'.

This is a story about a man without a clue; a fish out of water. A square peg being pounded into a round hole. A man who started out with a naïve notion that when it comes to dating, all women are basically the same. I’ve chosen these seven grief-filled tidbits of enlightenment from my five year relationship with the alluring and enduring Cheryl, my first Jewish girl friend and my first journey into a new world of dating. It didn’t go well for me.

Tales from Shakespeare was originally written in 1807 by Charles Lamb and his sister, Mary; as more comprehensible [and enjoyable] versions of the original Shakespearian texts, specifically but not exclusively for children. The original preface to Lamb’s work notes that Shakespeare’s words, “are used whenever it seemed possible to bring them in; and in whatever has been added to give them the regular form of a connected story, diligent care has been taken to select such words as might least interrupt the effect of the beautiful English tongue in which he wrote: therefore, words introduced into our language since his time have been as far as possible avoided." Two hundred years later, Lamb’s writings continue to delight and educate

By Susan Keefe Before reading this book my outstanding memory of Macbeth was having been given it as my first book to read for my English Literature classes at school many moons ago. I can remember my mum and I having a nightmare time trying to understand all the old English words - how I wish this eBook had been available then. For those who wish (or have to) read the classics this little book is a must. It has plenty of the original quotes by Shakespeare but around them the story is written in straight forward, easy to understand English.I can honestly say that I would have had a lot happier time reading this aged 14 than the daunting original. Well done to Phillip J. Mather, the author for presenting a classic story in a easy to read way.

In full color, 100 masterpieces of netsuke, the tiny Japanese sculptures made famous by The Hare with Amber Eyes.

Intricately carved from various materials including ivory, wood and metal, these tiny sculptures served a practical purpose in Japan: a netsuke was used as a toggle to fasten personal accessories to a man’s sash, an integral part of Japanese costume. Worn from the late sixteenth century to the nineteenth century, netsuke were rarely of artistic interest, but as time passed they evolved in terms of both materials and workmanship, and were then used by men to flaunt their wealth or as an expression of status.

Today netsuke are considered an art form in their own right and are prized by collectors around the world. They continue to be carved and are found in a variety of forms that depict a wide range of subjects – including figures of human and legendary form, ghosts, animals, botanical subjects and masks. Skillfully worked, these miniatures carving are of great artistic value, but they also provide a window into Japanese culture and society of the Edo period (1615-1868)

This book brings together one hundred of the most beautiful and interesting netsuke from the extensive collection of the British Museum, each of which has its own special charm and story to tell. Uncovering the stories behind these netsuke, and coupling them with stunning new photography, the book reveals why these tiny objects have captivated so many, the meaning they have held for those who wore them, and what they can tell us about Japanese everyday life during the Edo period.

The perfect gift idea for any woman on anyone’s list, for any occasion.  This beautiful hardcover coffee table book will transport you from Paris to Rome to the Pacific Northwest, with its exquisite photography and lovely poetry. It is sweet, romantic, and a little sexy, too.  A conversation starter for sure!  The pictures will remind guests of their travels around the world; and the poetry will inspire discussion, as well.  From poems with double meanings, to poetry dedicated to historical figures and ancient myths, there is something for everyone in this book, which belongs on every woman's coffee table.

The poetry within explores love in many different forms, such as the the love between Julius Caesar and Rome; or the love 18th century explorers had for the expedition; and, of course, famous love, like that of Cleopatra and Marc Antony; and Cupid & Psyche—who grace the front cover, because their story is the one that started all fairy tales.

The book also includes short, sweet love poems about young love, forbidden love, reminiscent love, tortured love, lost love, and everlasting love.

This book is sized perfectly to fit any living space; and sits nicely on an end table.  When open, it lays flat, easily displaying whichever scene the hostess selects to display on her coffee table to set the mood for the evening. It is an easy gift idea for any occasion, whether it's a housewarming; a birthday; an anniversary; Valentine's Day; Christmas; Hanukkah; a thank you gift; a hostess gift; or a gift for oneself, just to adorn a coffee table.

~ In this humorous and intelligent memoir from a consummate storyteller, Sheila Joyce Strunk captures the richness of language and the eccentricity of people and places she knew growing up in the mountain South. SWEET EVENING BREEZE bewitches from its opening dissertation on spirit. Strunk offers astonishing detail in the wry voice of the natural-born songwriter and storyteller. **** Two poets laureate enthusiastically recommend SWEET EVENING BREEZE: **** George Ella Lyon says, "There is so much to love about SWEET EVENING BREEZE: the author's affection for our history, her eye for the quirky and absurd in human character, her irreverent wisdom, her political and literary savvy. But what I find the most delicious about Sheila Joyce Strunk's memoir is the muscular music of her language. Lyrical, pithy, rejoicing in sound and rhythm, her words are alive and enlivening. Don't miss this book!" **** Gurney Norman says, "Sheila Joyce Strunk's memoir SWEET EVENING BREEZE is one of the most interesting and best written books I have read in a very long time. In her lively, vibrant voice she tells touching, funny, dramatic and always fascinating stories of her early life among colorful relatives and local people in the 1930s, '40s and '50s. The book is a river of stories of people, personalities, places and historic events that flow naturally together in Sheila Strunk's irresistible writing style. It is refreshing that the stories in Strunk's book come from her own prodigious human memory." (www.MotesBooks.com) ~

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Heartwarming and Humorous By Richard Kautz, author of A Labyrinth Year Sheila is a gifted storyteller and wordsmith. She brings us into her history with such charm and detail that we can imagine walking along side of her through her very interesting and colorful past. There were laugh out loud moments as well as tender reflections on growing up a Kentuckian. I was touched by the story of her gifted mother who spent her life as a housewife instead of the scientist she could have been. I know she is up in heaven and delighted that her equally gifted daughter is sharing her story in this marvelous book.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. You'll laugh, you'll cry; you'll remember this striking Kentucky memoir. By Mary Popham, author, Back Home in Landing Run One of the funniest books I've ever read! I love Sweet Evening Breeze, by Sheila Joyce Strunk, as she talks about her days of growing up in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky. Her real life experiences at home and in school are described in chapters where her knowledge of language, music and theater flows in word-perfect sentences and well thought-out delivery. She speaks of diverse figures like Daniel Boone and “Sweet Evening Breeze” of Lexington, and of many teachers, both beloved and eccentric. She is a singer and songwriter, and features several of her own compositions that complement her stories. How exhilarating to read a book that has you laughing hysterically, enjoying new and fascinating tidbits of information, and then discovering that the stories of people and events keep resonating in your memory. Her memoir is dedicated to the memory of Beverly Giammara, an electron microscopist, poet, and friend to a multitude of people, especially Kentuckians.

My only complaint is that it took so long to get. It bounced around between Lexington and Indianapolis several times before final delivery. We are located only 45 miles from Lexington and 300 miles from Indianapolis. Go figure!

Since its very first issue in June 2010, Toilet Paper magazine, the brainchild of Maurizio Cattelan and Pierpaolo Ferrari, has celebrated the riotous and repulsive image. In an interview with Vogue Italia, Ferrari said that "the project emerged from a passion/obsession that Maurizio and I have in common. Each picture springs from an idea, even a simple one, and then becomes a complex orchestration of people who build tableaux vivants. This project is also a sort of mental outburst." Each issue of the magazine features full spreads of surrealistic color photographs, shot in the slick style and eye-popping hues of commercial photography, unencumbered and unmediated by text. Despite Cattelan's alleged retirement from art, Toilet Paper has shown no signs of slowing down, spawning calendars, books, vinyl records and homewares, as well as the biannual magazine. In a hotly anticipated follow-up to the first Toilet Paper anthology, Maurizio Cattelan & Pierpaolo Ferrari: Toilet Paper, Volume II presents a selection of the best images from the past five issues of Toilet Paper magazine alongside special projects shot by Cattelan and Ferrari for such publications as Purple, New York Magazine, Kenzine, Le Monde and Dazed & Confused. All are collected in this deluxe hardcover volume, a book as at home on the coffee table as it is in the bathroom.

About the Author Maurizio Cattelan has exhibited internationally in leading international institutions and has participated numerous times in the Venice Biennale. He curated the 4th Berlin Biennale together with Massimiliano Gioni and Ali Subotnick. In the meantime, he managed to promote No soul for sale - A Festival of Independents that took place in the Turbine Hall of the Tate Modern in 2010 along with giving birth to art magazines such as Permanent Food and Charley. Since retiring from art, after the acclaimed retrospective at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City, he totally committed himself to the new publishing project, Toiletpaper magazine. Pierpaolo Ferrari is a fashion and advertising photographer and creative researcher. In 2007 he began a productive contribution with L'Uomo Vogue that offered him the chance to explore the portrait's potential and radically change its codes. In 2009, the metamorphosis is completed thanks to sharing his new publishing obsession with Maurizio Cattelan: Toiletpaper magazine. When he's not shooting, he can be found surfing in Costa Rica.

Othello (Illustrated), by William Shakespeare

From Publishers Weekly Starred Review. Shakespeare's legendary tragedy is revisited in this spirited and entertaining production that ran in London from November 2007 to February 2008. The flawless, talented cast features Ewan McGregor as the conniving Iago, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Othello (whose performance won him the Olivier Award as best actor) and Kelly Reilly as Desdemona. There is also excellent support from Tom Hiddleston (as Cassio) and Michelle Fairley (as Emilia). This audio production is a rousing, theatrical performance expertly guided by director Michael Grandage. Complete with a musical score as well as full sound effects and background noises, listening is so enjoyable that the play speeds by at breakneck pace. An enclosed booklet contains color photographs of the production and a well-written essay by drama professor Russell Jackson. There's also an entertaining bonus DVD disc featuring interviews with the cast and crew. Brilliantly produced in all departments, listening is the next best thing to seeing it live. From School Library Journal

Gr 10 Up-Naxos AudioBooks' top-drawer Classic Drama Series blissfully continues with this exquisite rendition of Othello starring Hugh Quarshie, Anton Lesser, Emma Fielding, and a full cast of professional English actors with extensive credits in the Royal National Theatre, BBC Radio Drama Company, and the Royal Shakespeare Company. Shakespeare's most domestic tragedy is an exceedingly complex journey through jealousy, self-doubt, inadequacies, and societal acceptance. Passed over for military promotion, Iago, perhaps Shakespeare's most nefarious character, manipulates Othello's downfall, culminating in the murder of his beloved wife, Desdemona, and Othello's subsequent suicide. Under David Timson's stewardship as director, the story is beautifully and simply told, embellished only with intermittent brassy flourishes of classical music and a dramatic echo effect and throbbing heart beat to underscore Othello's chaotic descent and rage. While the entire cast is excellent, the trio of Quarshie (Othello), Lesser (Iago), and Fielding (Desdemona) are outstanding. An outline of each individual cassette, complete synopsis, full notes regarding the text, and cast biographies are included in a compact 24-page supplemental booklet. For all collections.-Barry X. Miller, Austin Public Library, TX

Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist This impressive audio is a version of a London theatrical performance featuring McGregor as Iago, Chiwetel Ejiofor in the role of Othello, and Kelly Reilly playing Desdemona. In a studio recording session, the actors “reproduced as closely as possible the stage production.” Authentic sound effects and background music further enhance the presentation. Experiencing a play aurally is different than viewing a stage performance, and sometimes it is difficult to distinguish between the voices in the predominantly male cast. Nevertheless, this is an excellent vehicle for introducing the classic tragedy to students and Shakespeare fans. An accompanying DVD includes interviews with cast members. Their discussions of the characters, analyses of motivations, and decisions on delivering lines are thoughtfully presented. These fascinating commentaries add immeasurably to listeners’ comprehension of the play and the acting process. --Barbara Baskin

43 of 45 people found the following review helpful. Great play, great electronic version By Nick Othello was one of the first plays I was exposed to when I was younger. It has murder, suicide, intrigue and things that would get a teenager into Shakespeare.I've had mixed success with some of the free Kindle versions of Shakespeare. Some have been good, some have been awful. This is an exceptional version. It's formatted nicely and is easy to read. The only "lack" is that it is without line numbers, so if you were to use this for academic reasons, you might have an issue or two. Thus far, Othello's my favorite free Shakespeare play. I missed how much of a jerk Iago was, and all the deception that lead to Othello killing Desdemona. If you've got a Kindle and want to read Shakespeare, then download this version.

32 of 33 people found the following review helpful. Shakespeare's best Villain By R. J. Marsella Is there any other character in all of literature who is as calculatingly evil as Shakespeare's Iago? His jealousy over being passed over in favor of Cassio engenders a revengeful scheme that turns jealousy into a weapon used to destroy the noble Othello. Here innocence and trust is contrasted with pure manipulation and evil in what is one of Shakespeare's most revealing tragedies. The characters act exactly as they would be expected to based on the overriding quality that they represent. Othello is wonderful Shakespearean drama that ranks among his greatest works. The Folger Library editions are my favorite. Each page has a facing page that explains obscure terms and helps as a handy reference to make reading the plays pleasurable and educational. These paperback editions of Shakespeare's works are a great value and fit in your pocket.

24 of 25 people found the following review helpful. It's Shakespeare By J. Chad Davis Really, if you enjoy Shakespeare's plays, then you'll enjoy Othello. The actual read-ability of this digital version is excellent, so I'd recommend it above other digital versions.

Plenty of families spend their vacations relaxing at the beach. Not this family. When Paula and Bill both turned fifty, they transformed their family vacation into a yearlong quest to visit all fifty states. But with two demanding jobs and two active kids, they could barely find time for dinner, let alone a trip to Nebraska. They pushed their logistical skills – and their marriage – to the limit by scheduling family travels around Little League games, business trips, and high school exams. At times, they pushed their collective patience to the limit. Can you imagine convincing a teenager that it would be fun to take a family vacation to a neighboring state… or two… or fifty? Despite the challenges, the rewards were great. The family visited our nation’s cornfields in Iowa, oilfields in Oklahoma, and battlefields in Pennsylvania. They sought out the unique and unusual and found things like the Potato Museum, the Butter Cow, Carhenge, and a state park full of diamonds. Along the way, they feasted on everything from steaks cooked on pitchforks to pies blended into milkshakes. This book chronicles the family’s escapades, highlights their quirky discoveries, and wonders how they managed to maintain their sanity throughout a wild and tumultuous year. This true story will make you laugh, cry, and want to hug your country!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Funny, smart and friendly By claire allen With a humor similar to Dave Barry's and Sarah Vowell's, Paula Mathews tells the strange but true tale of the year she schlepped her family around the nation and discovered why she loves America, one weird roadside attraction at a time. She's a terrific writer, so the jokes are always as real as the story and the observations are deep but never heavy. It feels like she's telling you the story over a few beers at a bbq and she has you in stitches. By the end you feel like you have always known and loved her. Recommended for anyone who wonders if it's possible to stay true to your quirks while raising teenagers, anyone who is curious about how to be a patriot and still keep a critical eye on our nation's flaws, and anyone with a sense of humor.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A new take on the family vacation By Joan B. Kelsch The 50/50 Tour is a great story of one family's adventures to see all 50 states in one year -- the year Paula and her husband turned 50. It is side-splitting funny, heart-warmingly poignant and a well told tale of a family adventure. Paula tells a great tale and teaches you something new about each of the 50 states. I laughed and cried and appreciated her insights on teenagers, marriage, and the stick-to-it-ivness to achieve her family's dream. Quick and easy read -- great for the beach or an evening cozied up on the couch. Can't wait for the movie...

By Lynn Borton Hats off to Paula Mathews for a laugh-out-loud recounting of her family's quest to visit all 50 states in a single year. Paula's tale is equal parts charming and cathartic. Need to be reminded that we're not a nation at war with itself? I prescribe this cure-all. Look no further for roadtrip desitnation inspiration. A great read, start to nail-biter finish: will they make all 50? WIll they kill themselves in the process? You're going to wish you were this ambitious!

The Best TV Shows That Never Were, by Lee Goldberg

Review "The Best Bathroom Reading EVER," - San Francisco Chronicle  "A must-browse for media freaks." --USA Today "Covering programs from 1955 to 1990, THE BEST TV SHOWS THAT NEVER WERE is an absolute hoot. When Goldberg ventures into criticism for the entries, the results range from amusing to hysterical. I'm dying for a VOLUME 2!" Bookgasm"Full of fool's gold and genuine TV treasures." --The New York Post  "You'll slap your head in disbelief--try not to hurt yourself--at the idea of John Denver as a singing FBI agent. You'll wonder whether Joe Penny as a samurai district attorney would have been funnier--unintentionally--that John Belushi's 'Saturday Night Live.' For tube-historians, this is a must see." -- People Magazine  "Among the finest books I've ever read about television. And given Lee's track record as writer, producer, director and historian you're not going to find more accomplished guide or judge anywhere. Lee has a lot of fun (and so do we)." Ed Gorman, Mystery Scene Magazine

About the Author Lee Goldberg is a two-time Edgar & two-time Shamus Award nominee and the New York Times bestselling author of over thirty novels, including the fifteen Monk mysteries, "The Walk," "King City," "Watch Me Die," and the internationally bestselling Fox & O'Hare books co-written with Janet Evanovich. By Robert Morgan This is a fun book to read (indeed a cover blurb announces it as "Best Bathroom Reading Ever"), but it fails as a comprehensive reference work to TV pilots. The book lists over 300 pilots, along with a plot synopsis and information on stars, running time, network, and more. The problem is that there have been many more pilots than this book covers ("Experimental Television, Test Films, Pilots, and Trial Series, 1925 Through 1995 : Seven Decades of Small Screen Almosts" by Vincent Terrace lists 10 times the number of pilots.) The book also divides the pilots by topic, rather than sorting them by title, which makes for annoying reading. I would have preferred the pilots to all be listed together, alphabetically, perhaps with a small topic index in the back.Fun for a quick overview of the follies of TV, but useless for reference work. To be honest, I wouldn't be giving this a bad review if it weren't for the fact that the book is advertised on the cover as "The Almost Complete Guide..."- I doubt highly that this was the intention of the author. FAILED TV MAKES FOR FUN READING By Dlochte This highly entertaining look at failed TV pilots is, as Goldberg notes in his introduction, a "Best Of" collection, culled from his massive UNSOLD TELEVISION PILOTS: 1955-1989 study. If you're really into busted pilots, the latter is what you should be checking out. But if you're willing to take Goldberg's opinion on the 300 best and worst of the failed attempts -- and who would know better? -- THE BEST TV SHOWS THAT NEVER WERE is just the ticket. Concepts (usually high), characters and casts, with a humorously acerbic comment inserted by the author on occasion. One of my favorite descriptions focuses on a show that ABC was hoping to present in 2005. "Badlands" featured a US Marshal (Lewis Smith) and his cyborg partner (Miguel Ferrer) working for their tough boss (Sharon Stone?????). The ultimate gimmick here is that the marshals are patrolling out west where a drought has sent the population eastward and turned the territory to Mad Maxland. It's a situation that doesn't seem as impossible these days.

Fun reading By Derrick Anderson Lee Goldberg's book "Unsold TV Pilots: The Almost Complete Guide to Everything You Never Saw on TV" features 300 of the most interesting unsold pilots and lists each of them in a complete, interesting way. Lee Goldberg does a great job providing great information on each unsold pilot and even includes what stars played in that pilot. For example..."Steel Collar Man" featured Charles Rocket (Saturday Night Live) and Hoyt Axton (Gremlins). The unsold pilot, by the way, aired on CBS in the mid 1980s.Checking out this book is fun reading and I look forward to reading it again and again.
