Is She Available?, by Igor Goldkind Review There are battles here, with daemons both internal and external, and the poet tries on a series of masks to see how they fit. Think of it like a medicine man tasting all of the plants in the surrounding landscape to get of sense of their effect on the human mind and body. There's nothing more real than this." This collection of poems isn't the well-behaved straight lines of text you may be used to; they explode into sound, music and image; refusing the standard-issue poetry container. The form of this "book" is another dimension of the journey these poems take us on. --EschovarThis isn't a graphic novel. It's something else entirely. --Bleeding CoolBack in the 1980s, Igor Goldkind popularized the phrase graphic novel with the media, notes Bleeding Cool in its coverage of the project, and found that gave them permission to cover the rather previously-considered rather childish medium of comic books. Now, Goldkind s vision of what graphic novels could be, is returning, not with a comic, or a graphic novel, but something else IS SHE AVAILABLE?, a book of poetry and comic strips, illustrated by some of the greatest and the good of those in comic books who he has known along the way. And which does something very new as well: transforming the medium. --John Freeman, Down The Tubes.net

Barth, R.Nott Magazine Issue #18 – 07.2015 By Death, the Lonesome Reaper Is She Available?http://www.rnottmagazine.com/Is She Available? Review by Vinicius F. BarthIt’s been at least four years since I noticed thatthere’s something bugging me about Poetry.About the poetry made in Brazil, to be more specific. It’s hard to define what it is, but I can begin slowly, going around the corners of our own inaptitude to goon, stylistically speaking. Like a quest to write versesthat go by the book of poetry’s versed man in thissouth-american land, an invisible law dictates what iswritten in the new circles and what is published. That is,what is believed to be acceptable as poetry. I often hearin my head the echoes of those words, when I finishedmy still-unpublished-first-poetry-book: “you’re toofunny, you’re not serious”. Alas, since then, somethingbugs me even more about the poetic craftsmanship.I’m not really elated about 90% of the poetry madehere. (but that’s just one average guy’s opinion). I donot see it pushing the boundaries in any way, as it isclosely attached to the mandatory social issues, tourban tragedies, to the post-war traumas (!), to theprofessedly surreal nonsense, the contemporarysolitude – those being some of the well acceptedthemes. Therefore, this well-behaviorism somehowholds back our literature invention – in both form andcontent – in the 1980’s, tops. Visually speaking, we’rehardly over the Concretes, reliving Symbolism, notover Rimbaud and Mallarmé, or the gigantic mass ofEgo. Illustrated poetry, when it exists, walks on themagniloquent tacky road. Moreover, this is what I see as most important: weare not even close to make use of what technologyand new kinds of communication have to offer, exceptfor very rare and specific examples – like GuilhermeG. Flores’ Troiades, the website-poem, which wasdiscussed here in Issue #12.And this takes me to Igor Goldkind’s poetry (andsomething else) book: Is She Available?, recentlypublished by Chameleon Editions in USA.Goldkind is well known for his work with digitalmedia and for the spread of the term “graphic novel” inthe early 90’s. He studied philosophy, freelanced as apolitical journalist, studied with Foucault and wrote forthe Judge Dredd Magazine and 2000 AD. (a quick peekin wikipedia should tell you a lot about him). And hereI am, talking about his poetry book. A book entirelyillustrated by people like Bill Sienkiewicz (Daredevil,Elektra) and David Lloyd (V for Vendetta), and manyothers. For a Brazilian poetry (and comics) reader, this isquite an impact.(‘My heart’, by Rian Hughes)Page 2http://www.rnottmagazine.com/https://www.facebook.com/rnottmagazinehttps://twitter.com/RNott_Magazinehttps://vimeo.com/rnottmagazineIs She Available? takes you to a visual ride thatleaves its marks. From the very beginning, you aretold where you are: “you are here”. You’re told whatimages, words and sounds are all about. The book hasa proposal, defined motifs and an oracular admonition.Step into the book with open eyes and the Abysswill speak to you. Its voice comes next, and the bookstarts. It’s indeed a different approach from what I’mused to see in poetry books around here, but I find itquite soothing to have a guiding voice: it’s also easyto get lost among so many visual references andconstructions. From lyric poems to poems that are almost pureform experiences, there’s a lot to read and understand, from the Greek mythology to the contemporary-us,aside from the universe of things to see. You canguide yourself through the themes by rememberingthe proposition made by the poet himself in theopening: you know there are some aspects he’s tryingto approach here. (this works, I think, but be preparedto face all kinds of poetic forms mixed together). And Ican say, peacefully, that poems like ‘Just this’, with thesuperb illustration by DIX, make worth the price youpay for the book. The experience is intensified with the whole set thatcomes together. That is: Jazz (the music was composedexclusively for the book, by Gilad Atzmon – I can’t helpmyself recalling beat poets like Bob Kaufman withthat soundtrack); recorded readings of poetry; videoand animation; and many many images, that go fromphotography and abstract painting to the essentialcomic narrative. Unfortunately, I can’t talk about everyone of them here. Some of the constructions of the text, apart fromthe poetic value, are aesthetically beautiful, mergingGoldkind’s text with the visual composition of thedrawing, which happens, for instance, in ‘This lonelinesswon’t leave me alone’. The simple idea of verses comingout of chimneys like smoke works very well.Below you can see one of my favorites, ‘The bulletfrom my gun’ (by Shaky Kane), which makes one of thebest uses of graphic design for poetry that I’ve everseen:Apart from that, I have to enrich the creative work ofso many artists over a poetry book, like if it was a movieor a music album. The state-of-the-art technology foran e-book is amazing (I couldn’t open it myself in myPC, because I’m still so lo-tech), and brings this kindof literature to a new level, which has to be seen withjuly 2015ISSUE#18Is She Available?R.Nott Magazine Issue #18 – 07.2015Is She Available? BarthPage 3http://www.rnottmagazine.com/https://www.facebook.com/rnottmagazinehttps://twitter.com/RNott_Magazinehttps://vimeo.com/rnottmagazineconsiderate eyes by the poetic and academic circles.Using elements from the ‘graphic novel’ universe andthe ever-growing digital media industry, Goldkind ispresenting us with a new form of visual poetry, and Isee it as one step ahead, one more option for writersand other kinds of artists to work together.Perhaps this book is bound not to be seen as areal poetry book for some time (who knows for howlong), as being a poetry book for geeks at Comic Con.However, from where I see it, inside my own Braziliancontext, this book is a step ahead that we’re yet afraidto take, coming out of our holy grounds of orthodoxpoetry to see the genre with other eyes.Besides the paper (and our fetishes for it), this newworld of technologies and new possibilities for poetryreading are available for us, somewhere out there. So, are we available?Book trailer:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hB8BKOGWbzIWebsites:http://igorgoldkind.com/http://is-she-available.com/july 2015ISSUE#18Is She Available?R.Nott Magazine Issue #18 – 07.2015Is She Available? The book really made me think twice about what is important in life and in this world. Great read, a little a day goes a long way. Each poem is to be savored.

By Bryan Smith Words can take us many places, led down wandering paths laid down by the author. In this groundbreaking work, those paths take the reader within close orbit of various touchstones of the author's personal life. Yes, they're are very personal things here, but I believe that is the strength and power of poetry today..not that the words rhyme and are always pretty, but that the reader can find reflection and common cause with their own experience in the dance of words. Now within in these particular pages, the words really do dance. That's due to the outstanding type design of Rian Hughes, one of Igor Goldkind's many collaborators on this groundbreaking project. You see, this isn't just a simple book of poetry. Each poem is given enhanced life by the accompanying illustration provided by some truly gifted artists. There is also an enhanced e-reader edition available for various platforms that also provides a jazz soundtrack and other surprises. The words may not rhyme and the poems aren't always pretty...but they speak true and to the heart.
