About the Author Henrik Ibsen was born of well-to-do parents at Skien, a small Norwegian coastal town, on March 20, 1828. In 1836 his father went bankrupt, and the family was reduced to near poverty. At the age of fifteen, he was apprenticed to an apothecary in Grimstad. In 1850 Ibsen ventured to Christiania—present-day Oslo—as a student, with the hope of becoming a doctor. On the strength of his first two plays he was appointed “theater-poet” to the new Bergen National Theater, where he wrote five conventional romantic and historical dramas and absorbed the elements of his craft. In 1857 he was called to the directorship of the financially unsound Christiania Norwegian Theater, which failed in 1862. In 1864, exhausted and enraged by the frustration of his efforts toward a national drama and theater, he quit Norway for what became twenty-seven years of voluntary exile abroad. In Italy he wrote the volcanic Brand (1866), which made his reputation and secured him a poet’s stipend from the government. Its companion piece, the phantasmagoric Peer Gynt, followed in 1867, then the immense double play, Emperor and Galilean (1873), expressing his philosophy of civilization. Meanwhile, having moved to Germany, Ibsen had been searching for a new style. With The Pillars of Society he found it; this became the first of twelve plays, appearing at two-year intervals, that confirmed his international standing as the foremost dramatist of his age. In 1900 Ibsen suffered the first of several strokes that incapacitated him. He died in Oslo on May 23, 1906.

Moore A Doll's House is the play that made Henrik Ibsen world famous; though it got substantial acclaim, much initial attention came from controversy - and some from outrage. However, time has sided with it, proving Ibsen's points and burying naysayers under a pile of narrow-minded hypocrisy; the play remains Ibsen's most popular and one of his most acclaimed, taking its high place in the world literary canon.Often called the first feminist play, A Doll's is a savage critique of Victorian - I use the term loosely, Ibsen being Norwegian - society's treatment of women. It gives a vivid idea of just how repressed they were in everything from speech to employment; their very thoughts were persecuted as far as possible. We also see what form this took in the domestic sphere; patriarchy is lambasted and exposed as hollow, and male-female relations generally are thoroughly critiqued. The marriage institution is not spared Ibsen's unflinching eye, while motherhood and other related issues are also taken into account. Victorian society had very settled ideas about such issues and did not take kindly to Ibsen's rankling, but the play was a much-needed wake-up call, provoking extensive debate and perhaps being one of the liberalizing forces eventually leading to reform. That such a work was written nearly a century and a half ago by a man is truly incredible. It says much that many of those who decried it most loudly were women; a prominent actress even refused to play the lead without an altered ending. Ibsen was clearly one of those rare artists who truly has a finger on the cultural pulse; he knew just what buttons to push and hit with a sledgehammer. The play would of course be of only historical interest if it merely dealt with long-vanished injustice, but this is far from so. For one thing, sexism is sadly still very prevalent, even in the Western world, despite great advances. Some of the issues are thus still relevant even in this strict sense, showing just how far ahead of his time Ibsen was. More fundamentally, many core concerns - e.g., how to balance self-respect and ambition with marriage and children - are as old as civilization. The play will continue speaking to us profoundly as long as they remain unsolved, which shows no sign of being anytime soon. The best aspect in this regard is that it is not heavy-handed. Ibsen wrote many of what he called "problem plays" dealing with contemporary social problems without the didacticism that so often plagues such works and is nearly always fatal. He raises important questions but knows better than to give answers; that is for us to do. Like all his major work, A Doll's is highly thought-provoking. We may not agree with Nora, but she certainly makes us rethink long-held and oft-unquestioned assumptions - perhaps rethinking but at least surveying critically -, which may be art's true function and is certainly the highest praise sociopolitically aware art can receive. But the play would be very enjoyable and laudable even if we noticed none of this, and there may indeed be more immediate reasons for its greatness and continuing relevance. The character of Nora is an undeniably big factor. Sympathetic almost immediately, she engages both heart and mind; we have empathy for her thoughts and feelings because of her undeniable humanity. She has much that is admirable, even noble, but also has undeniable weaknesses; perhaps more than the former, the latter make her seem all the more human and relatable. It is a tribute to Ibsen's artistry that he makes even the most conservative onlookers quickly like her, which makes the powerful conclusion all the more forceful. Other characters of course pale beside her not only in importance but in goodness yet are not without relevance. Much of the ending's power indeed comes from the realization that Torvald is not really bad. He is certainly condescending, self-absorbed, sexist, and narrow-minded, but these are faults of the age; he is no worse than the average Victorian man - perhaps even better in that he truly cares for Nora in his patronizing way. What happens to him could have happened to any Victorian husband - which is exactly the point. Krogstad is also important in this way; we are ostensibly supposed to hate him, but his actions are after all understandable and all too human. We may criticize but should not condemn. All this drives in Ibsen's point that the problems were symptoms of a culture, not a few backward individuals. The tightly plotted and deftly executed story is another strength. The ending is of course deservedly famous, pulled off perhaps more effectively than any other in drama; it is led up to with truly artistic precision, the timing is impeccable, and the final door slam is the most brilliantly perfect yet subtle use of sound ever written into a play. Also, as George Bernard Shaw noted and others have come to appreciate ever more, the ending skillfully inverts the "well-made play" formula then considered obligatory. Ibsen tricked audiences into thinking the climax was the conclusion, which made the ending all the more stunning; we may miss the irony, but the essential effect is hardly dimmed. However, we must not let the ending blind us to overall quality. The play is highly emotional and supremely engrossing throughout despite having very little of what we now call action - an Ibsen trademark and a key ingredient in his greatness. He was a master of irony, foreshadowing, and other dramatic techniques, using them to full effect here; the satire making up much of the play is also immaculately done.A Doll's is simply incredible in every aspect, essential for anyone even remotely interested in drama, women's issues, the Victorian era - or great literature itself.

There is "nothing mysterious in them; there is not even anything new in them." Ibsen offered reality. He was not interested in presenting "morals, lesson, symbols and that sort of thing." Yet, "he hit upon an action that was all suspense and all emotion." Mencken quotes Ibsen: "What I wanted to do was to depict human beings, human emotions, and human destinies, upon groundwork of certain of the social conditions and principles of the present day." While many people may agree with Mencken, others will say that Ibsen was trying to show what was the proper behavior that people should follow. This portrayal of reality and what is proper behavior is seen in A Doll's House. It is realistic and, in addition, it is relevant, but the play also addresses what is proper. Ibsen portrays a husband and a wife. The wife is a "doll," beautiful, unsophisticated, childlike, well-meaning, but ignorant of the adult world and affairs. All of her friends see her as a doll. Her husband treats her as one, calling her childish names. He tries to control all of her behavior, not because he is mean, but because he loves her and he realizes that she is unable to do so. He tells her what to eat so that her teeth will not be spoiled from sugar and how much she should spend because she does not understand much about money. And it is the latter, the money, that gets her into trouble. Her husband was sick some years back and needed to travel and stay in a warmer climate for some months, but the couple had no money. She, out of childish but ignorant love, borrowed money from an unscrupulous man who insisted that she have her father countersign the loan. Her father was dying, so she forged his signature on the loan document. She was certain that this was not wrong because her intentions were pure, she wanted to save her husband's life. She did not tell her husband about the loan because she childishly wanted to surprise him someday in the future and show him that she acted wisely and that she, who he thought of as childlike, saved his life. She laughed about her cleverness often when she was alone. Now the unscrupulous lender is demanding something from her, or he will reveal the forgery to her husband and his employer, and this will affect her marriage and her husband will lose his job.All of this probably would not have occured if the people would have treated women properly, as human beings, not dolls.

An important feminist classic By Heather ORoark I don't normally read plays, so I have to admit that I went into reading A Doll's House with a fair bit of trepidation. I needn't have worried, though, because I zipped through the book in one sitting and it provided me with much food for thought. What surprised me about A Doll's House was just how current the message is, especially since it was written in 1878. For the first fifty pages or so, the message is definitely dated, as women now have autonomy over financial decisions and most women have held a job at some point in their lives. I also think most marriages are pretty equal in terms of who gets to decide what happens with the family finances (at least, most marriages that I know of). But it's the end of the book that really gets to the heart of the matter, and that's where I think the play really shines and holds significance for women of today's world. While I don't want to give anything important away, the end of the book is basically a stand-off between Nora and Torvald. Nora is asserting the fact that she is a person, independent from her duties as wife and mother, and she should be treated as such. She makes the case that just because she is a wife and mother, her own humanness shouldn't be sacrificed for the sake of her husband and children, and that she should have the right to think for herself and make decisions according to what is best for her individually. I think that many mothers struggle with this even today - the question of being an independent person apart from one's husband and children is something that I see all the time. Women ask themselves, do I make a decision based on what's best for me, best for my husband, best for my children, or do I try to make a compromise for all of us? While A Doll's House was about more than just that question, that was the point Nora got to by the end of the play and I do feel that was, in the end, the biggest message here. Women do compromise their needs and desires and put the other members of their family first - and by the end of the play, Nora wasn't interested in doing that anymore.Anyways, I really appreciated A Doll's House for its central message and was surprised to find how current that message still is. For anyone interested in reading classic feminist literature, this book is an important work to pick up.

The storylines themselves were good, but the number of grammatical and punctuation errors distracted me. When Bret and Cadence snuck out of town and his friend Earl drove them to the train station, Earl suddenly became Richard, the detestable man that Cadence was being pressured into marrying. I even went back and reread the previous page or two, thinking Richard had a change of heart and showed up to help. Misplaced commas and wrong words can make the reading experience frustrating.

Good read By Kindle Customer Unlike her sister at first Cadence was only missing McKenna and felt she needed to see her beforethe rest of the sisters were sent for . The author knows how to keep the story progressing with interest. Kept me wanting to see what would happen next. I like happy endings and was satisfied with the way this story ended.h

About the Photographer Costas The instigator and photographer of Dancing Men, is from the Greek island of Chios. Studying in the United States at Wagner College on New York s Staten Island, at Virginia Polytechnic Institute, and at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island he focused on math and physics. His thesis topic concerned the classical Greek philosophers concepts of energy conservation. When dance photography began to intrigue him and choreographer George Balanchine invited him to rehearsals, Costas began to see that there were instants that captured essential elements in dance. To photograph them he learned to operate his camera with the needed speed and to anticipate the right moments almost instinctively. The resulting dance pictures have appeared in books, periodicals, film and television footage, on posters and covers and cards, and in gallery exhibitions around the world. Costas volume, Balanchine Celebrating a Life in Dance (Tide-mark, 2003) has gone through several editions. Together with writer Nancy Reynolds, Costas works on the annual Balanchine calendar, which features dancers of the New York City Ballet. Costas lives in New York City. This remarkable collection of male dancers ranges across four decades and pictures some 50 notable performers in more than 100 images captured through the lens of one of America s foremost dance photographers. (Book). If you haven't heard this man's music on the airwaves, there's good reason. To quote the great Jelly Roll Morton, "He can't play his way out of no paper bag." But, if you have an old Gibson, Fender or Martin guitar under your bed, you'd better hide it 'cause the Guitar Man is coming for it with a paper bag full of cash. From Moosejaw to Mobile, "Guitar Man" Michael Indelicato has spent over twenty years and has covered more than a million miles in his search for vintage guitars. He stops at every pawnshop, flea market, and even the occasional garbage dump in hopes of finding yet another of these coveted instruments. And yes, he has bought (and sold) thousands of them including many of the most valuable and iconic guitars in existence. Mr. Indelicato started collecting these rare guitars at age 16; forty years later, he has made a fortune in this pursuit. Along the way, he has put guitars into the hands of many of the world's best known musical artists. Part treasure hunter, part door-to-door salesmen, part historian, these are his stories: the soaring successes, the stinging failures, and the insane coincidences that have befallen a man who gave up a lucrative corporate career to follow his musical muse. Like the strum of an ever-rolling arpeggio, his style of prose has been called "Jack Kerouac meets the American Pickers ."

Guitar Man-A Treasure Hunt for the Greatest Guitars in History By Amazon Customer I just got this book as a birthday present and since I had never heard of the author, had no idea what to expect. I was completely surprised to find a great collection of stories about Mr. Indelicato's travels to find the best and most valuable guitars in the country and how his search brings him into contact with some really original American characters as well as some of the best-known names in rock 'n roll. He really proves why he is just "Six Strings of Separation" from guitarists with names like Paul McCartney to his grandfather's best friend, who he meets completely accidentally in the course of searching for a rare instrument. It's easy to understand why Mr. Indelicato has been one of the most successful guitar dealers and collectors of all time- he knows a great deal about guitars. This book not only offers his stories, but a good many great photographs of some of the most valuable guitars he has bought and sold over the years. It is written with expertise, but also with a great deal of heart. And some of the stories are just plain funny. I would recommend this book to pretty much anyone with an interest in music, guitars and rock 'n roll in general. My only complaint is that it's just too darn short. I, for one, will be waiting for the sequel and I'll be the first in line to pick it up!

As a guitarist who wishes he had the resources to collect these great guitars, the stories of the musicians and players were fascinating. As the author notes, the stories behind the instruments are often the best part! Thanks for taking the time to share these stories Me. Indelicato!

Mr Indelicato has had quite a rich experience while on the road wheeling and dealing guitars. He has woven the facts and feeling in a great story form. I could not put the book down. Only thing I would want more in this book, is tell us more stories about the hidden guitars in all sorts of towns and with different characters. Great piece of work and can see a potential film with Mr. Indelicato on the road and his intriguing experiences.

The biggest scandal in the annals of sports has rocked the nation. At the center of it are The Genius, the Golden Boy, and the greatest team in the history of pro football. Will they survive it with their reputations in tact or will they sink down into the deep, dark depths of dishonor with Charlie Hustle, Lance Armstrong, and the Chicago Black Sox? The Great Deflategate Conspiracy: A Farce of our Times rips the pigskin off and tells the wholly imaginary story of what really happened. Excerpt: Fat Balls. In the runway to the locker room, Grady passed the Deflator and the Inflator, two team staffers assigned to equipment management. They had earned their respective and unusual nicknames because one was grossly overweight and the other was pathetically underweight and they were both always adjusting their diets accordingly. The Inflator was specifically in charge of football inventory, behind the scenes making sure there was a plentiful supply of balls in good playing condition during practices and games. The Deflator was more hands-on, scuffing up the balls and gauging their internal pressure to suit the rigorous standard of his boss, the Golden Boy. The Deflator had come to his position by birth. His Daddy, once known as The Needle, had prepared footballs for some of the great names in the game—Otto Graham, Roger Staubach, Elvis Grbac. At the moment Grady walked by them, they were checking their MyPlate apps on their cell phones to see what brand of bacon had the most calories. The Deflator was getting married in a few months and the Inflator was to be his best man. Neither of them was looking at all spiffy in his tux, so they were on a mission to get into their best tux-wearing weight. But they couldn’t let Grady know any of that. Around the Minutemen, the inflexible rule was: Do your goddamn job. So the Deflator quickly looked up at Grady, tapped on his phone and said, “Checking on the weather for you, GT.” “Winds out of the northeast,” the Inflator added. Grady nodded knowingly. He’d already printed out a detailed weather forecast for himself during breakfast. When they saw Grady head into the Quarterback’s Room, they turned back to MyPlate. “See, man! What I tell you?” exclaimed the Inflator. “Kirkland Signature Fully Cooked Bacon, 80 calories for two slices; Farmer John Classic Premium Cut, 100 calories.” “Crazy shit,” argued Deflator. “You think they raising fat-free pigs down on those farms. Fat’s to a pig what air pressure is to a football. It’s their identity. You can’t mess with it.” Just then they both looked up to see Malcolm Olotoonji walking past. “Uh-oh,” said the Inflator softly. “Trouble,” the Deflator replied. “Someone best ought tell Coach. He hates that dude coming around.” Minutemen coach Lyle Lessinger, known throughout the football world as The Genius, was a potpourri of negative emotions…hatred, disdain, indifference, paranoia…especially when it came to the League front office. He found the League establishment largely clueless about the day-to-day requirements of getting a football team ready for competition at the highest level. That cluelessness manifested itself, he believed, in a lot of unnecessary rules and regulations that were either detrimental or utterly incidental to the performance of world-class football. He regarded the League hierarchy much the same way a field commander in war regards the brass sitting at desks back behind the lines…with contempt. This is the deluxe edition, including totally new Tuck Rule material.

The Great Deflategate Conspiracy: A Farce of Our Times, by Mr. Dan Riley

About the Author Dan Riley grew up as a New York “Football” Giants fan in a border town in the Boston-New York rivalry. His first gridiron heroes went by the names Sam Huff, Y.A. Tittle, and Frank Gifford (whose #16 adorned his shoes, shirts, and hats). His allegiance started wavering in the lean, late 1960s, and he actually found himself rooting for the New York Jets in Super Bowl III because, like many in the counterculture, he believed that Joe Willie Namath was all about love, peace, and happiness. In 1971 he allowed his admiration for Stanford quarterback Jim Plunkett to lead him to the once laughable New England Patriots, who drafted Plunkett #1 in the pro football draft. He’s been a proud and very, very satisfied Patriot fan ever since. His previous works include The Red Sox Reader, The Yankee Reader, Look Before You Lean (under the pen name Employee X), The Dan Riley School for a Girl, and the award winning play Spinelli.

“It is pointless to talk about his ability as a pianist. He is exceptional. However, there are very, very few musicians, let alone pianists, who naturally understand the movement and free thinking necessary to hurl themselves into experimental or traditional areas of music, sometimes, ironically, at the same time. Mike does this with such enthusiasm that it makes my heart glad just to be in the same room with him.” David Bowie on Mike Garson SYNOPSIS Mike Garson has played piano on sixteen David Bowie albums, including Aladdin Sane, with his celebrated piano solo on its title track, Diamond Dogs, Young Americans, 1. Outside and Reality. He has also played live with Bowie on countless tours and shows, and remains his most long-standing and frequent band member. For some time Clifford Slapper has been working very closely with Garson to write a book which explores the life of this extraordinary and eccentric modern musician. It documents in detail how as a pianist he was catapulted overnight from the obscure world of New York's avant-garde jazz scene to a close and long connection with Bowie. In addition, Garson is recognised as a classical virtuoso, a jazz master and one of the world’s greatest exponents of improvisation. He has also recorded and performed live with other rock legends such as the Smashing Pumpkins and Nine Inch Nails. All of this is covered by this first ever biography of Mike Garson. Its starting point was several days of in-depth and frank conversation with Garson himself, and covers a wide range of themes which will be of interest to all Bowie fans, but also to anyone with a passion for music, social history or the process of creative inspiration. Input has also come from many interviews with those who have worked with him over the years, including Earl Slick, Trent Reznor, Sterling Campbell, Reeves Gabrels, Dave Liebman and many others. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Clifford Slapper is a musician and writer. After a degree in history from London University followed by various roles in education, he became one of the most sought after pianists in the UK, having performed with David Bowie, Boy George, Suggs, Lisa Stansfield, Jarvis Cocker, Galen Ayers, Angie Brown, Stereo MCs and Gary Kemp amongst many others. As a composer and arranger he has been involved in diverse and unusual projects. Together with Billie Ray Martin he created a ground-breaking series of live and partially improvised film-scores in London and Berlin for Polanski’s Repulsion, and he has been writing for many other artists. As a pianist he features on recent releases by Marc Almond and Holly Johnson, and has performed for fashion labels including McQueen and Marc Jacobs. He has also appeared in television comedy productions, having played the piano part for Bowie's appearance with Ricky Gervais on "Extras" (HBO/BBC, prod. Charlie Hanson) and played the piano as Dudley Moore in a BBC recreation of the sketches of Peter Cook and Dudley Moore, presented by Jonathan Ross. He also produces and presents regular performance club nights across London incorporating cutting-edge live artists of all kinds. Aside from magazine articles, this book will be his first published work.

Bowie's Piano Man - The Biography of Mike Garson, by Clifford Slapper

Review "Bowie's Piano Man: the life of Mike Garson" by Clifford Slapper (Fantom, 2015)   "The must-have book in this field" Ricky Gervais "wonderful addition to the Bowie bibliography...a class book for a class act" ✭✭✭✭ Classic Pop magazine Awards issue 2015 BEST BOOK "a welcome tribute to a great musician...Slapper gives us musical insights" ✭✭✭ MOJO "really great and fascinating! A fabulous book"  Gerry Leonard (David Bowie guitarist) "Clifford Slapper - whose own claim to Bowie fame involves being the piano-playing hand double for Dave's appearance on "Extras" - does an admirable job of picking apart Garson's life and career...Bowie loyalists - and fellow piano men - will lap up Garson's insider insights, as well as keen observations from the likes of Tony Visconti and Trent Reznor." ✭✭✭ Record Collector "Quite simply it's a great book: engaging, inspiring and entertaining; written extremely well and sympathetically about one of the greatest pianists of our times" Blues And Soul Magazine "Readable, rigorous, revealing, Bowie's Piano Man is musicology of the highest order. After reading Slapper's breakdown of Garson's playing at the Hammersmith Apollo, during Bowie's legendary farewell to Ziggy Stardust in 1973, it is impossible to listen to the recording again without an even greater appreciation for the music. This biography is much more than a simple account of one man's life. It is almost a history of the piano in popular music, such is the range of influences - from avant-garde jazz to Stravinsky and Rachmaninov - that comes within the author's purview. Slapper's insights into the nature of performance itself would make an equally enthralling book. His forensic analysis of the corrosively addictive nature of fame is among the most convincing I've ever read. Like Garson's thrillingly exquisite improvised solo on "Aladdin Sane", Bowie's Piano Man takes you on a journey without co-ordinates, until you find yourself in a place you had no plans to visit. But you'll be glad as hell you took the trip anyway. Brilliant!" Tribune Hot Press Music Book of the Fortnight : "Pieced together from days' worth of lengthy, revealing conversations with the magnificently-named Clifford Slapper, "Bowie's Piano Man" is a rich, never-before-told account of the eventful career of one of music's oft-unheralded players. As the Thin White Duke himself says, "it makes my heart glad just to be in the same room with him". The next best thing is learning about him in print. The fact it features contributions from the likes of Trent Reznor and Tony Visconti makes it an even more intriguing read." Hot Press: Ireland's top music magazine   "The book is superb; essential reading for genuine Bowie fans, and indeed anyone who loves music. It's a truly fascinating journey, especially for musicians, writers, artists, and all music industry people." Mark Shaw (Then Jerico) "Bowie fans will obviously adore this thorough and well researched biography. The fact that Slapper is also a pianist, really helps convey the story." Cellophaneland arts review site "I've been a massive fan of Mike Garson for years and years. I can't believe that this is the first book ever written about him. It's so good to be able to find out answers to questions I've pondered for ages. I think it also helps that it was written by another amazing piano player, Clifford Slapper. I think it brings a unique angle to the book. Loved it to death. It's fantastic."   Glenn Gregory (Heaven 17)

From the Author At the age of 11, I ran home through the streets of Wembley to my parents' "Dansette" record player with its legs off, clutching the first record I had ever bought: an album of 12-inch vinyl in a gatefold sleeve. It was David Bowie's Aladdin Sane, in the spring of 1973, and as the bright orange RCA label started spinning at 33 and a third revolutions per minute, I was transfixed. The opening two chords of "Watch That Man", a G and a C, were an apt fanfare for the start of my adolescence. In particular, it was the piano playing by Mike Garson on that album which was a revelation. I had been playing the piano since I was seven, but this gave a whole new purpose to my studies. It sounded bright, at turns both melodious and unnervingly discordant. Like shards of broken glass, his rapid, cascading high notes danced over his rumbling, thunderous bass runs. I knew then, this was what I wanted to do.  I went on to become a pianist myself, always inspired by Garson as well as Bowie, and I have played with many artists (Boy George, Jarvis Cocker, Gary Kemp, Marc Almond, Holly Johnson) who have declared themselves hugely influenced by Bowie and albums such as Aladdin Sane, Pin Ups, Diamond Dogs, Young Americans and David Live - all of which Garson played on. Like Woody Allen's Zelig, Mike Garson seems to reappear at various points in modern music history, each time able to give perfect expression to that moment, whilst still retaining his own identity. Martha and the Vandellas, Stan Getz, Lulu, Nine Inch Nails, St. Vincent, Luther Vandross, Smashing Pumpkins, Gwen Stefani, Freddie Hubbard: these and dozens of others have had their sound enhanced by the Garson touch.  It was appropriate that this young American jazz pianist's first appearance on a David Bowie album should be on Aladdin Sane in 1973 - which Bowie described as "Ziggy goes to America". When Ziggy had got to America the year before, manager Tony DeFries had phoned up Mike Garson and asked him to tour the States with Bowie. Garson was an avant-garde musician of the New York underground, and his reaction was along the lines of "David who?" but twenty minutes later he was at the audition in a Manhattan Studio. Just a few seconds in to his playing over the first few chords of "Changes", Mick Ronson said "you're in!" and he has never looked back since, playing on nineteen Bowie albums and numerous live appearances, including Bowie's last live spots to date in 2006. Also in 2006, I finally worked with David Bowie myself, playing the piano for his hilarious cameo appearance on the Ricky Gervais television comedy, Extras. He sat at a piano and sang to Ricky Gervais' character, whilst miming his piano-playing to my own playing on a second piano, off-camera. It was surreal to 'be the hands' of my musical hero that day. He was a dream to work with: fast, witty, intensely intelligent, supremely professional and yet modest -  and very funny.  Equally intriguing was my first meeting with Mike Garson in Los Angeles two years later. At one point, without knowing I had played for the Extras show, he told me how he had enjoyed seeing an English comedy on cable TV with Bowie in it, apparently playing piano. He had spoken to Bowie and joked with him, "I see you're playing the piano pretty well yourself, now. I guess you won't be needing me any more!" Garson told me that Bowie had replied, "No, Mike, that wasn't me, it was some English guy playing." It was an enjoyable twist for me to be able to tell Garson then, "I was that guy!"  We bonded over this coincidence. We discovered much common ground whilst sharing stories of our work as pianists. It became apparent that Garson is an exceptional man with a fascinating and inspiring story of his own. I said, "There are many biographies of David Bowie; has anyone ever written a biography of you?" He replied, "No, but I think you would be the perfect person to write it!"  I recorded 25 hours of intense conversation between us, Garson specifying his preference that the biography I would write should start from this dialogue between two pianists. In addition I interviewed about fifty other people who have worked with him or known him well, including legendary producer Tony Visconti and French music writer Jérôme Soligny, who described him as a "cathedral of music". Star artists queued up to contribute to the first biography of their much loved fellow musician. Current Bowie guitarists Gerry Leonard and Earl Slick were both effusive in their praise for Garson's work, and Leonard has prounounced the resulting biography "really great and fascinating, a fabulous book". Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails called me to speak about Garson whilst on tour, and rang off two hours later, only when called for a sound check for that night's show. Garson never drank or took drugs, which makes him not only a reliable witness, but one of the only participants in the 1970s rock scene who actually remembers anything. His outlook on life is inspiring, enlightening - and often very funny. I spent much of the interviews laughing with him at the tide of hilarious stories from his working life, all told in the strong vernacular of his Brooklyn roots. The book has three relationships at its heart. The first is between myself and the fellow pianist who has helped shape my life twice - once in 1973, to become a pianist and again in 2006 to become a writer. The second is between him and his music. But then there is David Bowie, who in 1972 helped to transform the direction of Garson's life. They have had ever since a very special creative rapport based on their shared passion for artistic sincerity, integrity and spontaneity.  On the last ever Ziggy Stardust show, at Hammersmith in July 1973, Bowie asked Garson to go on stage alone first and play several of the songs from that night's set just on solo piano. This trust has often been repeated, such as when Bowie again asked Garson to go on stage first alone and start the set at Glastonbury in 2000 in front of 100,000 fans. In the 1990s and 2000s songs such as "Life On Mars?" were often performed with just Garson's piano accompanying Bowie's voice. Garson tells me that Bowie is the best producer he has ever worked with, because ultimately he lets Garson be himself. But he also says that he has often fulfilled his brief by playing the piano as he feels Bowie would play it, if he were the pianist.

From the Back Cover Mike Garson played the legendary piano parts on David Bowie's Aladdin Sane album, and also on Diamond Dogs, Young Americans and 16 other Bowie albums. At Bowie's final concert as Ziggy Stardust, in July 1973 at Hammersmith Apollo, Mike came on first and played a solo piano set of Bowie songs. He is a prolific classical composer, jazz master and improviser. He has also recorded and performed live with rock, pop and soul legends including the Smashing Pumpkins, Nine Inch Nails, Gwen Stefani, Jeff Beck, Luther Vandross, St. Vincent and with jazz greats including Stan Getz, Stanley Clarke and Freddie Hubbard. All of this is covered in this first ever and fully authorised biography of Mike Garson.

Bowies Piano Man The Life of Mike Garson By Daphne Sherman “The main thing I found about this book, and which really impressed me, aside from the absolutely brilliant way it is written, is the way it portrays Mike Garson’s philosophy. The book is not only about the man who is a musician, who played piano for David Bowie, it also explains Mike Garson’s philosophy in life. He has never gone after the money – except from necessity, in the beginning. It was hard work, which paid off and brought his success. Success does not ‘just happen’, it happened because of his hard work. Everybody should read this book as it shows how hard he worked, and conveys the message that if he could do that, then so can others. The message I got from the book is that Mike Garson is an incredible inspiration, as someone living his life through effort, and he is an inspiration for the way he thinks.People used to ask my husband, Ben (Ben Sherman, founder of the shirt company and fashion brand) the secret of his success. He would say he got lucky. But if you think about it, luck is in fact preparation coupled with opportunity, and if you are not prepared when the opportunity comes, then it is called bad luck! The thing about Mike Garson is that through hard work, he was always prepared. When the opportunity came to play piano for Bowie, he was totally prepared to take on that role. He has continued to practise for eight hours a day even now, so he is always in preparation for the next opportunity. People say, ‘I can’t do this, it’s too late for me’, but nothing is ever too late. The introduction to the book explains how it came about, with the author having asked the subject whether anyone had ever written a biography of him before, and him replying ‘no, but I think you would be the perfect person to write it’. He said this even though Clifford Slapper had never written a book before. Now, a few years later, the book has been successfully written and published. Mike Garson seems to have a real ‘sixth sense’in his intuition. He must have had this feeling about Clifford Slapper, to have known that this was a person who could do this. He must have somehow seen it in him. This book is one of the best reads I’ve had. The author, Clifford Slapper, has more than made this interesting. It's intriguing, informative, and while it's rare for me to laugh out loud while reading a book - I have in this one. There's one thing I would add to the title – “Bowie’s Piano Man: the 'inspirational' life of Mike Garson”. In fact, through the incredible example that is Mike Garson, this book could be added to the list of books recommended to the army of readers seeking ways to improve their lives.”

Reclusive star Bob Dylan had been holed up in the artist-town of Woodstock for more than three years, following a serious motorcycle accident. He toyed with playing the Woodstock festival brought to his own front door but it was the Foulk brothers who succeeded where all others failed, luring Dylan 3,000 miles away from home to their Island, to create a Woodstock of his own. Landing the music biz coup of the decade, the three Foulk brothers – a printer, an estate agent and an art student – became pioneers in pop promotion by signing for the world exclusive appearance of the reluctant ‘voice of his generation’. For the organisers, short on experience, resources and time, the ensuing public response was almost overwhelming, and the challenge of delivering the most eagerly-awaited musical event of the era daunting. The world’s media covered the phenomena, gave the event global coverage and marked it as a suitable climax as the swinging sixties drew to a close. The 1969 Isle of Wight Festival was Bob Dylan’s one and only full concert appearance in seven-and-a-half years and played its part in a highly transformative period of the artist’s life. Stealing Dylan from Woodstock tells, from a unique perspective, of an extraordinary event which seismically altered the lives of the author, his family, all those involved with it and many of those who attended.REVIEWS "The book includes a potted account of Dylan’s life and work, and some fantastic unseen photographs. . .But it’s the human stories that compel. As well as the colourful cavalcade of performers – including Joe Cocker, Richie Havens and The Band – there’s a stellar supporting cast of English eccentrics."- Graeme Thomson, Daily Mail"Beyond merely being a book about a festival, Foulk does a masterful job in telling the true story of what it took to get Dylan on the bill and what it all meant for all involved. The text is accompanied by photographs of the various artists on stage and in attendance as well as many fascinating behind the scenes pictures."- The Rock and Roll ChemistOne of the fantastic things about exploring Dylan’s pre-and post-festival reclusiveness in part one, Stealing Dylan from Woodstock, is that we see how this historic Isle of Wight event locates within the star’s own story, and maybe even how the festival affected his subsequent career.- The Big Issue

Stealing Bob Dylan from Woodstock: When the World Came to the Isle of Wight, by Ray Foulk, Caroline Foulk

About the Author RAY FOULK, now based in Oxford, has fostered many passions since his early days as a promoter. After the dizzy heights of the Isle of Wight Festivals and stadium events in London, the Foulk brothers were head-hunted by the Milton Keynes Development Corporation to help plan the leisure content of their new city. Through this Ray brought the inventor/scientist/ designer Buckminster Fuller, to the project, embraced his environmentalism, and eventually trained as an architect himself at the University of Cambridge. Combining design, education and promotion he spent much of the nineties and noughties as an environmental campaigner, and led the ambitious in-schools project, Blue Planet Day, rekindling the satisfaction, and more, that the festivals had brought to his youth. Recent years have been dominated by environmental architecture and writing. CAROLINE FOULK has worked with her father, Ray, for many years, researching, writing, and co-promoting the schools environmental project, Blue Plant Day. Recently, together they have completed a screenplay for the cinema about the invention of modern art. Caroline trained and worked as a teacher and lives in Oxford with her husband and three children.

By Bonnie B Neely This book reads so easily as we follow the three men who had the impossible seeming vision to bring Bob Dylan out of his hideaway, where he had been for three year recovering from a bad accident, onto the stage again, but this time 3,000 miles away from his Woodstock fame to the Isle of Wight in England. I love true stories where people make their impossible dream become a reality, and this is certainly that! Dylan, who was a leader of the 60's music, peace, and young people's movement and the foremost respected and beloved figure, surely could not be lured onto the stage again and in England of all places. Yet he was by Ray Foulk and his brothers, Bill and Ronnie, and the world came to the concert on this tiny island. The story of the inception of the plan, the creating of the dream, and the success that followed is a delightful, celebratory read! And a happy reminder of the anti-war movement young people and their music of the 60's gave the world! Terrific book!

The book appeals because of the central figure of Dylan who had been improbably, lured across the pond to perform at the Isle of Wight Concert. This is the Dylan who had been in a virtual self-imposed exile, and had famously, turned down offers to appear at Woodstock. The book succeeds in writing about the preparations for the concert in a very engaging way and places one very much in that place and time. Along with his brothers, Foulk succeeded on two counts: Pulling off an historical coup in getting Dylan to appear at their concert, and (maybe just as tough) putting together a well-written narrative of it all. (If the author wishes to contact me I'll supply a list of the typos).
