Lana Turner was one of the most glamorous and enduring stars of Hollywood’s Golden Era. From her brief debut in the controversial THEY WON’T FORGET to her star-making performance in ZIEGFELD GIRL and subsequent film classics like THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE, THE BAD AND THE BEAUTIFUL, PEYTON PLACE and IMITATION OF LIFE, she enchanted audiences around the world for five decades. Off-screen, with her nightclubbing, romantic dalliances and multiple marriages, the actress provided plenty of fodder for both Hollywood gossip columnists and scandal magazines, culminating on the night of April 4, 1958 when Johnny Stompanato, Lana’s mobster boy friend, was stabbed to death in her Beverly Hills home. Set in the mind and memory of Miss Turner, LANA & JOHNNY WERE LOVERS dramatizes the events leading up to that fateful night and its aftermath. 2 women; 2 men. Simple Open Set

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Fun Read By Loves to Read I read quite a bit, mostly History and biographies and every so often feel the need for something light and entertaining, this book was it. I found myself chuckling out loud and was amused through the whole 2 act play. This play was based on Lana Turner's wild and erratic life and it is set in Lana's mind. It starts off with her talking with her lawyer Jerry Geisler after her daughter stabbed Lana's lover Johnny Stompanato to death. Imagine if you will, Lana is discussing her relationship with the gangster and all seven of her husband, her mother is giving her gentle rebukes on her life and Stompanato is there in spirit form adding his wisecracks and one liners and you will get the idea. The play was a fun read, (as are all of Michael Druxman's plays. Fiction based on fact and you think, "well if it didn't happen that way, it could have."
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. irresistible By Frances Doel Michael Druxman has come up with an irresistible approach in his "Hollywood Legends" series of plays: he lets the stars tell their own stories by looking back at the key events and relationships of their lives. Sometimes they address the audience directly, taking us into their confidence as they reveal the truth behind the legend. LANA AND JOHNNY WERE LOVERS is the latest and one of the very best in this series, featuring the quintessential glamorous movie star, Lana Turner, the original "hottie" whose off-screen life of multiple marriages and torrid affairs culminated in the fatal stabbing of her mobster boyfriend, Johnny Stompanato, by her 14-year -old daughter, Cheryl. What makes this play so entertaining is that Lana Turner's life was a movie: in her case, the facts are as riveting as the scandalous stories about her. Michael Druxman's Lana is an outspoken, candid and defiant survivor who gives great sound bites. Michael Druxman is such a good dramatist that we realize as Lana takes us into her confidence by 'setting the record straight" much of her what she says becomes sheer self-justification. That's a big part of the fun: we love to see the rich and famous give themselves away.
